Tan Jee Say may be cause of SPP's internal rift

Tan Jee Say may be cause of SPP's internal rift

Rumours from Singapore People's Party (SPP) say that Tan Jee Say may have been the cause of the internal rift that resulted in six members quitting the party.

The mass resignation was earlier reported to be caused by disagreements with Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Mrs Lina Chiam. See the story here.

An insider has revealed to Lianhe Wanbao how former presidential hopeful Mr Tan Jee Say, may have been a cause of the party's troubles.

The younger members in the party were said to have been keen to pull Mr Tan into SPP.

The insider said, "Wilfred Leung and Benjamin Pwee had hoped to get Tan Jee Say to join SPP. But to do so, there has to be restructuring in the party. The younger members have to take over key leadership positions."

Sources also say that Mr Benjamin Pwee had been trying to get Mr Chiam See Tong to make way for new leadership.

The idea was to let Mr Chiam be the party's honorary chairman while Mr Pwee would take over as secretary general of the party with Mr David Tan as the chairman.

Mr David Tan was Mr Tan Jee Say's teacher when the latter was still a student in Raffles Institution.

The senior Mr Tan had invited Mr Tan Jee Say to SPP's National Day dinner in August last year, and the younger Mr Tan was said to have unwittingly grabbed all the attention and outshone party stalwart Mr Chiam.

Insiders also pointed out that the leadership substitution plan met with resistance from Mrs Chiam, resulting in the party's troubles and the six resigning.

The party also appears to have severed ties with Mr Pwee and his photobook, "10 Days", meant to commemorate SPP's campaign in the last general election.

The book was meant to be launched together with the party's conference yesterday, but instead, a sign stating "No unauthorised book sales" was put up.

A party member even said, "The book is Pwee's, it has nothing to do with SPP."

The article doesn't mention NSP, but won't be surprised it's the place the gang will end up in. Which might be a good thing, as another strong front in politics.

Am not sure why SPP in the first place - NSP would have been a lot more advantageous and easier to build. No dominant party leader who has a Parliament seat and more people are already there. Unless the SPP breakaway did all these so that Lina Chiam can expose her true colours.

The worst choice now is to form a new party. Opposition gets divided further.

Looks like TJS is the man to watch. Here are his recent highlights
1. Drove his company to liquidation
2. One day after GE, approached NSP to merge with SDP without telling CSJ
3. Agreed to be member of TKL's PE organising committee and left after one meeting
4. Attended SMA dinner as guest of Presidential hopeful Tan Cheng Bock who annouced his candidacy
5. Help put Tony Tan in
6. Defacto head of NSP
7. Helped emasculate Chiam's party in record time compared to long drawn affair with CSJ

Thats leaves WP, RP and PKMS. By end of this year, another two will go under leaving PKMS as the only party that had not been touched by TJS. In 2016, a few months before GE he will annouce that he has formed his own party.

The other one to also keep an eye on is his former RI teacher; called himself Dr. David Tan Lam Kiap, one-time CEO of Global Medic Tech Ventures Pte Ltd. Do a due diligence on where he got his "Dr" from. An ACRA search will also turn up a string of failed ventures. And he was heading the SME Business at SPP. Horrors. Good luck to whoever joins TJS's new party.

Yes, waiting for the hostile takeover before I join NSP or join his newly formed party.

Great insight. I believe he is the most successful PAP mole thus far. He could also be the reason for GMS to be sidelined. No longer useful. Hahaha....

btw for tjs, his new heart beat office near the istana, how much is office space rental there? banging on orchard road presence and near the istana instead of an office in the heartland i.e. a heartland president image? sounds like foolish way to spend money, wrong branding.

It is still better to vote for TJS if he is the only one against the PAPpies. The bigger plan is to rid the government of the PAPpies.

TJS has the death touch. During his Presidential Campaign, did TJS seek help from SDP to do up the marketing and PR? Or SDP activists volunteered their help? I know an acquaintance (I won't call him a friend) in the financial circle who does not speak well of TJS. TJS sticks himself close to those who could further his goals but did not show slightest appreciation when the objective was achieved. If that is true, it is a tell tale sign about TJS's political acumen and personal inter-relationships.

No matter how he is, perhaps should get to know him in person. Because interesting that Michelle, AYG, Nicole, Jeannette, Hazel & Tony, Ben Pwee, Wilfred etc, the most prospective-looking group outside PAP and WP, is behind a "joker card" like him.

These folks are behind him because of his credentials and marketability. He is perceived as a strong anchor that is very easy to sell to the public, able to garner attention, looks impressive on paper, etc. He speaks reasonably well, and more forceful than WP which is still perceived by many quarters as meek. So those who don't go the WP route will tend to look toward a person like TJS who is more vociferous and carries excellent credentials.

He will never be the most successful in this aspect. Maybe when the current one steps down, he may or may not. The current one, if exposed, will cause many heart attacks in S'pore.
