How 'independent' can Ong Ye Kung be for this investigation commission?

If he acts really 'independent', that means he has been sleeping all this while when he's supposed to provide checks as an independent director.

If he doesn't act independent, well, what can I say, the whole show is just a wayang...

My take, business as usual, nobody's fault.

Guys, you are missing the point.

Ong is not leading the COI or part of the COI. This is an internal exercise but he is the designated independent director on the board and thus tasked to lead the internal witch hunt. This is not in support of Ong who was rejected by the voters despite endorsed by the old man.

His appointment however is a powerful message that they have lost faith with Saw and her subordinates. This is Koh fed up with his reputation being dragged thru the streets and having being fucked by the Minister is flexing his muscles on his own lot. With a COI in place and his political career at stake, he is going to come up with some startling decisions that will please the voters and put him on the popularity stakes.

What the PAP is essentially doing is turning a negative into a positive and thrashing their own lot as it is already a lost cause. This govt has never been independent.

For the MAs Selamat inquiry which Wong Kan Seng claimed to be independent, he had his own staff sit on the committee.

The question is why have an internal inquiry when there is already a COI. If the intentions are genuine, there will be duplication of effort and more importantly, having significant internal communication and directives deemed sensitive hidden or destroyed. There is also the possibility, the internal inquiry becomes a dress rehearsal for the COI where people are coached.

Thanks, Scroobal for pointing out the difference between this internal investigation and the COI. But it doesn't detract from the fact that be as it may an internal invesigation, it's related to a very public issue that every S'porean has a stake in, quite unlike your typical corporate foul-up such as non-compliance with SGX rules, accounting standards etc, and hence it should be conducted by someone totally unrelated the SMRT, not just for the sake of transparency, but to get the full value of an investigation of such a nature. To the public, as long as someone from SMRT, independent or non-indepedent director, is leading such an investigation, the perspective is that there's bound to some form of cover-up because certain things could be uncovered that may make the SMRT board culcapable of which even an independent member is a member of.

SMRT can convene any committee they want and appoint anyone to head it, but the findings of these committees should carry no weight whatsoever with the public and authorities. When it comes to making a decision on SMRT regarding the breakdowns, SMRT's internal committee findings must be discounted 100% and must never enter the consideration.
