Field potential PM in GRC or single seat?
DEPUTY Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean yesterday made clear that whether or not PAP candidates with the potential to be Singapore's next prime minister are fielded in a single seat or group representation constituency (GRC) is for the ruling party alone to decide.
He declined to answer a challenge from Workers' Party chief Low Thia Khiang, who on Sunday said a potential prime minister should stand in a single-member constituency (SMC).
Mr Low had told reporters: 'I think the potential prime minister should go to a single ward so that there will be a straight fight and he can secure the mandate from a single ward straightaway from this election, and from there he moves on.'
Yesterday, Mr Teo was asked for his response.
'We decide on our own strategy. We don't respond to Mr Low Thia Khiang,' he said at a press conference to introduce three new PAP candidates.
PAP leaders have described the forthcoming polls as a watershed election because it will usher in a new team that will form the core of Singapore's fourth-generation leadership.
This team will then select from their own ranks someone to succeed Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and be appointed Singapore's fourth prime minister.
