[h=1]Singapore Government paid undisclosed sum for copying art work[/h]admin / 1 day ago June 13, 2015

The Singapore Government has paid local artist Lee Wen an undisclosed sum for copying his art work, a rounded table tennis concept. Statutory board Sport Singapore (SportSG) and its vendor, Unusual Productions, have earlier met up with Lee Wen and his art gallery iPreciation for a discussion over the copied art work.

Lee Wen is a Cultural Medallion award winner and his rounded table tennis concept was first displayed in Melbourne Central in 1998. In 2014, Lee Wen submitted his art work to the sport museum and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), of which he did not get a response.
His art piece was then displayed during the South East Asian (SEA) Games exhibition and he became aware only after his friend informed him. Through the SEA Games organizers, the MCCY denied any wrongdoing on their part and chose to blame their vendor:
“This was an activity proposed by our vendor, and were unaware of the similarity. We did not intend to infringe on any rights.”
An undisclosed sum of payment has been made to Lee Wen in the name of “goodwill”, according to the Sport Singapore’s press release. Evidently, there is no compensation and admission of fault by the MCCY hence the term “goodwill”. Aside from the payment, Lee Wen’s art work will be accepted by the sport museum as he had previously proposed in 2014.
Do you think the Ministry should have done its due diligence to avoid wasting taxes on “goodwill” payments?

Nothing is more wasteful that spending hundreds of thousands of dollars renaming Marina Bay, Marina Bay; and then to repeat the stupid again by renaming the budget terminal, The Budget terminal.

Normal people learn from their own mistakes. Smart people learn from other's mistakes. Fools never learn and keeps repeating the same mistakes.

Compared to this, APHETC is nothing.

Hey it's SG50. There should be no stinginess on its expenditure. Be patriotic, be grateful.

They are obviously lying. How can the ministry be unaware of the similarity when they had confirmed receipt of the proposal in 2014?

It is an insult to say that sum of payment has been a "goodwill" payment.

Ping Pongs and Patent Rights.

Via Ivan Heng :
This from Helina Chan of iPreciation Art Gallery, who represents artist Lee Wen:

"We submitted Lee Wen's ping pong go round to minister of MCCY and sport museum in 2014 after Artbasel HK.

To propose to collect the interactive art piece and put in front of the sport hub for Sea games. Minister's office confirmed receipt of this proposal.

Instead of acquiring the original art piece a copy was made and put in front of sport hub for sea game.
This piece of work was highly publicized since Artbasel HK last year and as recent as this March by ST as NHB is touring this piece of work in France together with other SEA artworks.

Can this be coincident? Or some thinks they can get away with it?
Renaissance City?
Art hub?"

Sea Games Organizing Committee headed by PAP Minister for MCCY,Lawrence Wong offered no apology but a "GOODWILL PAYMENT" to local artist Lee Wen after kena caught red handed for stealing the idea of his Ping Pong Go Round table installation.

See how this scumbag steals the idea and now with his twisted logic make it looks like the artist's fault.

As an elected MP, you would expect him to uphold and protect IP rights by penalizing whoever civil servant who steals the idea and went ahead to build this duplicate artwork without permission from the artist.

Instead he now behaves like a thug or was he the one that authorize the building of the duplicate artwork.

No need for govt to apologize to Lee Wen. Lee Wen was conferred Cultural Medallion in 2006 by govt. By accepting the Cultural Medallion, Lee Wen accepts the unwritten agreement to provide National Service to the govt whenever it is needed. The table tennis art though conceptualized by Lee Wen IS PROMOTED by the govt through NHB. Govt has been investing and supporting Lee Wen's art since he was awarded the cultural medallion. Without governmental support, Lee Wen, like many local artists, will not have the international exposure that he is enjoying now. The govt is extremely kind to even provide him with a goodwill sum of money. Why should govt be paying for a concept which they had indirectly invested money?

Indeed, many of the local artists and performers need PAP patronage (i.e. toe the line and kiss ass) to be successful, to get media exposure, to land the big gigs.

Yep, so whenever local artists under govt patronage kpkb, I don't give a shit to their whinings. These are the boneless fuckers who whine just so that the govt will pay attention to them and give them more mileage or monies. I am always amused that quite often our govt give in to their whinings!
