Quirky ping pong table at SEA Games carnival resembles work by Singaporean artist

SINGAPORE: A circular ping pong table at the South-east Asia Games Carnival for children at Sports Hub which bears a striking resemblance to a famous artwork by a Singaporean artist has prompted criticism online.

Cultural Medallion recipient Lee Wen has said he was unaware of it of the table at the Sports Hub. His own interactive artwork, titled Ping Pong Go-Round, has the same circular features, which allow for multiple players. Variations of it have been shown in different exhibitions and fairs such as his solo retrospective in 2012 and last year’s Art Basel Hong Kong. Most recently, it was part of an exhibition of Singapore artists at the ArtScience Museum.

The artist was alerted to the work on Friday (Jun 5), the same day as the opening ceremony of the SEA Games 2015, via a photo posted on Facebook by film-maker Tan Pin Pin. “She thought it was mine. Somebody also saw it yesterday,” said Lee.

“I’m trying to find out who’s in charge and talk to them to ask them to stop exhibiting until they settle with me," he added. "It’s good that they picked up the idea but it’s as if they didn’t think it has been done before. I think they should at least talk to me. I’m thinking of asking for some compensation in terms of artists rights because according to one lawyer I’ve talked to, it’s probably an infringement of copyright.”

In response to queries from TODAY, the SEA Games Organising Committee, which is handling the children’s carnival, revealed the activity was proposed by one of its vendors and said they will be contacting Mr Lee.

“We regret that this incident took place. This was an activity proposed by our vendor, and were unaware of the similarity. We did not intend to infringe on any rights.

We will work an arrangement with the artist as soon as possible,” said the statement.

The ping pong table in question, called 300° Table Tennis, carries the logo of Atos, a French technology firm appointed by the organising committee to manage the information technology for the Singapore games.

While it forms a “C” and Lee’s work is a complete circle, the latter said his artwork could easily be manipulated and rejigged so that users could enter the central space.

This from Helina Chan of iPreciation Art Gallery, who represents artist Lee Wen:

"We submitted Lee Wen's ping pong go round to minister of MCCY and sport museum in 2014 after Artbasel HK.

To propose to collect the interactive art piece and put in front of the sport hub for Sea games. Minister's office confirmed receipt of this proposal.

Instead of acquiring the original art piece a copy was made and put in front of sport hub for sea game.
This piece of work was highly publicized since Artbasel HK last year and as recent as this March by ST as NHB is touring this piece of work in France together with other SEA artworks.

Can this be coincident? Or some thinks they can get away with it?
Renaissance City?
Art hub?"

Dear all,
We should be talking now about what should happen if this does not go the way of Lee Wen being fully compensated?

According to a person on my FB NewsFeed, the exhibit was closed on Saturday.
Very fast since the news broke.

This has been an issue for years related to creators moral rights.

Institutions should be protecting the creators.
Lawyers will argue in whatever way they
wish but the rights do belong to the artist.

I've started a FB group to pursue this. If you are interested, please join.

Sea Games Organizing Committee headed by PAP Minister for MCCY,Lawrence Wong offered no apology but a "GOODWILL PAYMENT" to local artist Lee Wen after kena caught red handed for stealing the idea of his Ping Pong Go Round table installation.

See how this scumbag steals the idea and now with his twisted logic make it looks like the artist's fault.

As an elected MP, you would expect him to uphold and protect IP rights by penalizing whoever civil servant who steals the idea and went ahead to build this duplicate artwork without permission from the artist.

Instead he now behaves like a thug or was he the one that authorize the building of the duplicate artwork.
