Do you honestly think the PAP regime 'renovates' hawker centres for fun or altruism? 
It's the same when some HDB estate gets upgraded, suddenly the neighbourhood shops start to close down, move elsewhere or lease out half the shop space. Just a coincidence I'm sure.

May all Singaporeans & foreigners living here, do realize the FACT that rise in prices of goods & services is NOT just because of supposed rise in GST alone.
MANY FACTORS affect the rise in prices that is often BEYOND the control of our small red dot nation that only seeks to survive, to leave NO ONE behind, in a TURBULENT World, proven by wars, conflicts, & worse by biz or INTERNATIONAL entities that seek to CAPITALIZE on such Humanity's woes, with NO regards to Humankind faring on the bigger picture, such as boycotts, closing of ports, horrific rises by big pharma for meds, etc, to bring us to live on knees to them...
Thus, may each Human have courage & be more discerning to SUPPORT the right causes, both on local & foreign levels, to ensure each will be able to bring food to the table for oneself & loved ones. TRADE is the LIFE BLOOD of Humanity. Without sustenance, all will be hungry & starve to death...
Most will not donate to causes in their lifetime, & even to charities or only donate out of personal glory & expectations & all that it can show, without a care that charity begins at home, society & Nation.
All Humanity needs to survive, is that such begins at home, then to loved ones, nation & World.
Hawkers too need to survive, as they had long been providing cheap meals to citizens, with low rents & support by our elected govt funded by taxpayers.
Not every citizen earns a $5000 salary/mth, or live life as a single without families, wife & kids, etc, but those earning below such are the MAJORITY that would help biz enterprises to survive based upon economy of scale, intelligent popular foods/service, marketing & would be a major market than niche & fickle markets.
Some biz enterprises may be greedy, but it only takes a meal to find out WHOM truly supports citizens & Nation, thus support those whom support us...

Don't forget the hawkers are forced to close the stalls for many days for 'spring cleaning' throughout the year. With proper maintenance, you probably only need that shutdown 'spring cleaning' once (immediately after CNY?) each year, but I'm sure some arrangement was made between a crony in charge of cleaning services and the town council or NEA. 
yup, ever since the 80s, road works are fucking permanent.......probably 90% are not necessary

The insignificant nobody me had watched that movie & thinks that it is a good movie, which some may be able to relate to it, as it portrays his own personal perspectives rather than upon the bigger picture of civilization that he shares & co-exists with.
It tells of a Human who's job became redundant & was retrenched, which made him angry & bitter, clouded his judgements & moral compass, to selfishly hurt & harm innocent society when he should had gone instead for Anger Management Counselling...
Me too, am guilty of such thoughts while driving on roads stuck at road diversions...
But the reality is, nothing is forever & wear/tear is only common, thus road works are necessary before it can cause issues with motorists...
1. Should one travel along the western roads, one will realize that potholes litter the roads. Such are caused by heavy containers traffic daily, which caused wear & tear upon roads & thus the need to be patched up & roads diverted temporarily.
2. Drainage & sewerage pipes are buried under ground. Such pipes do not last forever, & needs to be repaired or upgraded before major smelly 'ponding' happens, & thus needs to be dug up & replaced.
When Singapore was built, such pipes were not lay out upon every inch of the country, but by bits & pieces as development began, eg-Redhill, Clementi, Toa Payoh & then to today's Sengkang & Jurong Island, thus the timescale differences in wear & tear for replacements.
3. So too the same with electrical trunking which are underground & not the ugly unslightly above ground cables in other nations. Wear/tear as well as development that needs an increase in power supply, which will result in land & groundworks too, before major blackouts occur to homes & industries due to limited supply needs.
And more - with new even feeder LRT construction, roads would have to be TEMPORARILY diverted so that within a few years, citizens would have a better ease of transportation needs...
At least PWD had attempted to perform repairs in the nights while we sleep, so as not to inconvenient the daily transportation & movements of our population, but only so much can be done in the night of mere 6hrs. Thus a need of understanding by the population, as we grow, prosper & develop.
What is it about??? Isn't this currency debasement??? Increasing the money supply = devaluing my savings and your savings (if one can understand the illusion of elastic currency that is). Isn't this as good as taking my money and then ring fence around it and put rules as to where I can spend my own money???
