[h=2]SAF MO scolds sick NSman: You can only report sick if you collapse![/h]Posted by temasektimes on July 1, 2012
An NSman reported sick after feeling giddy during a Remedial Training (RT) session only to be told by the SAF Medical Officer (MO) on duty that he could only see him if he collapse!
The shocking incident took place yesterday evening at around 4pm at Maju Camp along Clementi Road. All combat-fit NSmen have to go for regular IPPT tests failing which they will have to go for compulsory RT sessions till they pass.
According to a lengthy email we received from NSman Mr Yang which was also forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office, he felt giddy and was about to faint during the training and was told to fall out by his Physical Training Instructor:
“During and after the initial exercises, I felt giddy and was about to faint. Before I collapse, I decided to inform the PTI (Physical Training Instructor – Army personnel) about my status. I informed the PTI that I am unable to contiinue. I requested to ”report sick”. The PTI advised me to fall out and to see the MO (Medical Officer) just to be ‘safe’.”
When he was sitting at the Medical Center, the MO saw him and shouted at him rudely:
“I was sitting down on a chair when the MO walked directly in front of me. He looked down on me while he stood there and stared at me in a hostile manner. He then shouted, ”What do you want? This Medical Centre is not for anyone to report sick. You can only report sick if you collapse during training! You should have just told the PTI that you want to fall out!’”
Mr Yang was later told by the medic Lance Corporal (LCP) Du Rui that the name of the MO is
Dr Wong Yi, MCR no: 15603E

[Source: My Queenstown blog]
After being examined by Dr Wong, Mr Yang was told that he was feeling giddy because he was having a fever and was given an excuse from RT.
Before Mr Yang left the medical center, he was confronted by Dr Wong again:
“Shortly after I walked out of Maju Medical Centre, the MO rushed out and shouted at me to stop. He then asked me in a condescending manner, ”What is your RANK and NAME? Are you unhappy?” He appeared hostile.”
A spate of deaths among NSFs and NSmen during training exercises and IPPT/RT sessions this year raise serious questions about the SAF’s training programme.
Unfortunately, with no genuine and credible opposition in parliament to hold the Defence Minister accountable, NSmen like Mr Yang have little choice other than to vent their frustrations online.

Forget about his professional responsibility, just for poor manners he should face a disciplinary board.

Well, its NSmen Yang' fault for not being a white horse. His father should have been a somebody and his file would have been stamped with WH. Than the MO would speak to him in a nice soft voice, hold his hand, stare in his eyes, and ask him with a concerned look "what's wrong?"

I agree wholeheartedly with the MO. We're training soldiers not girl guides. If soldiers are allowed to report sick for lame reasons such as "dizzynees", we might as well wave the white flag at the first signs of a hostile force.

We used to pick up soldiers who had already collapsed and gave them a kick in their asses before adding a brick to their full packs and sending them on their way. Whole platoons were given extra guard duty if any member of the platoon collapsed during training. This instilled a sense of responsibility towards each other and spurred the whole platoon on to make sure that no man was left behind.

Those who felt like collapsing carried on regardless because they didn't want to let their platoon mates down.

We aren't training soldiers anymore. We're training pussies.

If realism isn't achieved during peacetime training, you can forget about winning any war. In fact, many armies put their trainees through greater stresses during exercises than they would normally encounter in real battleground situations.

As for those who collapsed and died during RT, all I can say is that it's nature's way of weeding out the weakest links. Hopefully, it prevents the defective genes from being passed on to the next generation.

When did he say about winning war? You seriously think we can win wars? It would be a miracle if we can hold on for more than 1 day.

So exactly what was wrong with Mr Yang in the end?
Probably nothing!
The MO was right then.

If this Mr Yang was sick with a fever, he could have seen his own GP and produce an MC without having to show up for the RT session; just call up and fax it in.

I've attended an RT session before and it is super duper relaxed!
The PTIs dont push you hard at all; you train at your own pace. I've seen a bunch of friends who specially arrange to have RT and the same day so as to catch up and talk cock while walking the entire 3km.
And the 3km run is the highlight of the RT session. Warm up session 30min followed by a break. Chin up session followed by another break.
In-pro and Out-pro takes up more time than the actual exercise.

I hardly broke a sweat during RT unless I pushed myself to make the most out of my time wasted there.

I think my Sec 1 school badminton training was tougher than RT!

During my BMT days, there was once I wanted to report sick as I had a bad stomach. The farking cpl refused to let me go and said that I was keng-ing. I fed up and made one phone call to my uncle who was an old school mate of Winston Choo (Chief of Army then) to kow-peh. Before lunch time, my PC called me into his room and spoke very nicely to me and asked me why need to trouble the upper echelons for such a minor matter. After that, he even asked another NCO to personally escort me to the medical center. I got an Attend C for one day.

Here's a tip for all the MOs and regulars in the SAF:

Reservists are kings. Treat them like one. Otherwise, you may never know who you are offending, and that may have serious repercussions when you step outside the camp gates and into civilian life.

Don't fuck with reservists. For your own sake. Just a gentle reminder.

In the first place, NS boys going through BMT - there is Parent's Visit Day!!!! What is cissy way to run an army! So mommy knows her darling little boy isn't denied comforts of material living.

Let's face it, for army for S'pore, apart from the regulars, NS boys are just a bunch of overgrown boyscouts imagining their role in "defending" the country. The uniformed army is just for parade to show investor's their assets are guarded by soldiers in case some terrorist (again make believe) attacks.

Have fun.

Cheers!
