How do you know that the Indo Govt. cant fix tis problem, have they openly admit it?

Because I have a bit of first hand experience regarding how things work in Indonesia.

There is a complex symbiotic relationship between various government agencies and private business and the lines are extremely blurred.

In a nutshell, unless it is financially more lucrative for the people who matter to NOT start fires, the current status quo will continue. The President can't just pick up a phone and tell whoever is in charge to stop it. Things don't work that way.

Let's make this a sensible discussion regarding the issue. What exactly is the PAP supposed to do?

If the Indonesian government can't fix this complex issue, how is a foreign nation supposed to influence the outcome?

I will put the things they need to do ( not necessarily in that order unlike what their pay increases had been which was always going up in that order!)

1) Economic sanctions
2) No more monetary aids in every other avenue.
3) allow more slush funds to come over here.
4) Tax their FTs heavily over here as compensation ( only applies to them)
5) Confiscate their assets of those Indon related companies who seek refuge here and are indirectly or directly responsible for the haze.

Let's just say that Singapore isn't as important to the Indos as you obviously believe.

Singapore is hardly the sole source of aid. Indo could easily get a lot more from the OZs in return for cooperating a bit more on the refugee issue. Slush funds can easily go elsewhere along with their FTs.

As for confiscation of assets if it means some top level army generals are left out of pocket, I can assure you that Indonesia can do a lot more harm to Singapore than vice versa.

Have you looked at a map recently? Perhaps it would give you a reality check. Remember that Indonesia extends all the way to and including the Riao Islands. You need to view this issue in the correct perspective.

You speak the truth. Too many overly patriotic Sinkies overrate Sinkieland's importance and influence.

Apart for being a money laundering hub, Sinkieland matters little in the grand scheme of things.

Even for the haze, the pappies are going to do nothing. They could have banned Wilmar from all operations and listing on the stock exchange, but that's not good for business.

So Ah Sam, in the end it means the leaders of Sinkland are not hard headed enough lah...did not what the white scums had announced that they will pursue ALL avenues against Indon recently especially after the RECORD 300+ psi haze recently?

Isn't what Pinky preached last week to tell the common Sinkie to be hard headed? Don't walk the talk is it?

Sinkie are daft. vote for leaders who reward themselves ridiculously but when these leaders need to take hard actions for the common folk's benefit, they shy away as a easier way out.

Business?

You mean that is not good for cronies ( Pappy related ones especially and pappies themselves ) to benefit from the economic climate at the expense of the common folk Sinkie.

So when it comes to voting, who did these common folk idiot vote for? LoL

I always think that size does not really matter unless you have size as well as the arsenal like uncle Sam.

Or you could opt for lack of size but HAVE the arsenal like uncle Sam, this also will do.

So in reality, who got the BIGGER GUN? LoL

Singapore is too small against the might and size of Indonesia. While it punches above its weight in many areas, the fact remains that it will always have to do a diplomatic dance in order to manoeuvre in the dangerous waters it is located in. Military deterrence can only go that far. It's a reality that ANY sinkie government will face.

Being "hard headed" includes knowing when and how to pick your fights. In a head to head confrontation with Indonesia, Singapore will always come out second best. It is far more sensible to work quietly for a solution that will benefit both parties.

Along with hard headedness, a good dose of pragmatism is needed for long term survival.

Right now if Indonesia were to stop lighting fires, it would definitely benefit Singapore but where is the benefit to Indonesia? A solution needs to worked out whereby Indonesia benefits to the same degree either directly or indirectly.

Punches above its weight?

Wait. Let me go into a closet and laugh it out first. This was a uncontrollable reaction from your above statement.

Buy used submarine. Buy planes and upgrades that US does not want any more. Take in those FTs for defense where they are rejects in their own country.

Ever wonder why, when they spend BILLIONS of Sinkie dollars they could not even made a fighter plane from scratch on their own?

The order of the day is to line pockets. Their pockets to be precise.

I tend to disagree here...

Size and numbers do matter..

Remember, previously the half blind President threaten to swarm Singapore with 100,000 boatmen.

They just need to ask these villagers to row their sampans from Batam to Singapore.

What the use of Singapore fire power and arsenal.??

U just cannot mow them down and earn world wide condemnations.

Let's make this a sensible discussion regarding the issue. What exactly is the PAP supposed to do?

If the Indonesian government can't fix this complex issue, how is a foreign nation supposed to influence the outcome?

For starters they can report the real PSI readings. Anyone who has monitored the "official" readings seen on TV screens & the one found on the internet sites like http://aqicn.org/city/singapore/central/ will have noticed that the PAP is trying to downplay the problem.

Instead of trying to hide the problem they should be warn the citizens. When I go out I use an N95 mask but I find it striking that I am usually the only one with a mask  It's just like in Batam, people are going around ignorant that there is a health problem.

I would like to see the PAP gov't calling up the Indonesian ambassador & warning them of the situation. Instead we have silence from the PAP. They are probably hiding overseas to avoid the haze.

So what actually has the PAP done so far:confused: Have they called up the indonesian ambassador to offically complain:confused: Has LKY or LHL contacted SBY or contacted anyone on the Indo side to put pressure on that gov't? How about paying visits to the indonesians owners of the palm industry who have homes in Spore & giving them a friendly warning? Is the Spore ambassador in Jakarta making daily visits to SBY in Indonesia to update them daily on the seriousness of the situation?

Because knowledge is not the issue. The problem is one of corruption.

Someone has been paid handsomely for the liberty to slash and burn without consequence. Further up the food chain, palms have been greased so that only lip service is given to enforcement efforts.

In order for Singapore to change the course of events, all those who are currently benefitting from the status quo need to be rewarded beyond what they are now receiving in kickbacks. I'm sure if the price is right, both sides will be able to negotiate a settlement.

Sabre rattling will get Singapore nowhere. The govt knows it and Singaporeans should be aware of it.
