Agree. Our brave ex-soldier general said he went to inspect the living conditions and he was happy with the standards woh.

The squalid living conditions are allowed to happen because the government turns a blind eye. These workers are only digits to them, just like the rest of us. It is symptomatic of how the govt and its related GLCs treat human beings in general - as just digits.

Govt has 'answered claims' by ex-SMRT drivers

POSTED: 27 Apr 2013 9:40 AM

The government on Friday rejected fresh statements by former SMRT bus driver He Junling and civil society members.

SINGAPORE: The government on Friday rejected fresh statements by former SMRT bus driver He Junling and civil society members over the Chinese national’s allegations of police abuse, which had been dismissed by the authorities after an investigation.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Manpower on Friday said the two statements were “reckless” and “unfounded”, and “repeat allegations the government has already answered”.

It said: “He Junling now repeats his claim that he had been ill-treated but again gives no details. Either he makes a police report and substantiates his allegation with evidence or the allegations must be regarded as unfounded and spurious.

“He cannot have it both ways — casting a smear without having to offer any proof.”

He’s statement Friday maintained that he was assaulted while in police custody, although he decided not to bring charges against the officers.

A separate statement — which was signed off by non-government organisations (NGOs) such as MARUAH, the Think Centre, Workfair Singapore and individuals, including infectious diseases expert Paul Tambyah as well as ex-political detainees Teo Soh Lung and Wong Souk Yee — said, among other things, that it was “not right” for the MHA to suggest the drivers’ claims were “baseless”, “just because they had not raised their complaints during investigations, or had opportunities to do so after that”.

They added: “The veracity of a claim should not be dismissed simply because of the timing in which the complaint was made.”

In response, the ministries said that the NGOs and the individuals should have “facilitated a proper investigation” of He’s allegations, “instead of hindering the investigation while continuing to cast aspersions on the integrity of the police”.

The ministries also accused them of exploiting vulnerable foreign workers. “In the guise of protecting vulnerable foreign workers, the NGOs and individuals have in fact exploited them for their own political ends,” they said, alluding to Associate Professor Tambyah and Ms Teo’s links to the Singapore Democratic Party.

The NGOs and individuals also “continue to repeat their reckless allegations about our labour laws, unions, and the Ministry of Manpower without any basis”, the ministries said.

“Our tripartite system could not have worked for more than 40 years now if it had been based on oppression of workers and suppression of labour rights.”

He, who was convicted along with three others and jailed for seven weeks for instigating an illegal strike against SMRT last year, had claimed that he and another former SMRT driver Liu Xiangying were abused by police officers during investigations on the strike.

These allegations were refuted last Saturday as “baseless” by the MHA, following a probe by the Police Internal Affairs Office.

The ministries on Friday reiterated that the drivers did not raise their complaints with the police or the courts.

“He Junling in fact withdrew his allegation and then contradicted himself. Nevertheless the Police Internal Affairs Office did investigate their claims and found them baseless. The Attorney-General’s Chambers concurred with these findings,” they said.

Egg on the face of the govt, showed how badly SMRT was managed and the Prime Minister's wife who helms the biggest shareholder is no where to be seen. A new CEO that went on wonderful holiday stateside shortly upon taking the reins clearly showing he did not need to pay attention to a known broken system.

When the strike took place, did not feel the need to return from his important family holiday and his management giving making false claims that the issue had been resolved the same day and the workers would return to work. That blew up spectacularly the next day. Forced to return, his PR Dept arranges a contrived press photo-shoot while he makes a dormitory visit. Now the guy looks a positive daffodil in the next day's press as the photo speaks a thousand words and they are not pretty.

And you thought he had picked up a few lessons along the way. No, the man does the exact thing his predecessor did. She recruited her cronies from her former organisation with no background and he does the exact thing.

A lot of staff suspected he knew about the mess but it was not his mess. It was a left over present from the former CEO. If he were to clear it then nobody will know and all his effort would be wasted. So guess what he siam far far and let it blow up then rush back as if he was in the dark and act like a savior for SMRT and to tell the world how fuckup the company is in at that moment so as if there is anymore fuckups blame it on the former CEO.

They have no regrets. Tomorrow they will hop on a boat and try to land on the shores of another country.

Precisely. I have very little sympathy for fabricated claims of abuse. They will be happily working somewhere else in a jiffy and our local NGOs will be left in Singapore screaming about government cover-ups and malfeasance. Meanwhile the Tiongs will be laughing.

I have always advocated that FTs are here to supplement the local labour market. Since singaporeans are being displaced, the last thing on my mind is FTs rights etc. FTs not happy can always go back. KPKB in singkieland for F? and I cant believe that amount of bleeding heart liberals in singkieland that support such FTs,,why dont they fight for local rights instead? These supporters are nothing but traitors and should be hang for treason like the rest of the PAP

Most of these bleeding heart liberals have no political agenda and are genuinely acting out of goodness of their own hearts. But recently there have been a couple of infiltrations who have political agenda. The MHA and MOM statement is telling. It is directed at the new infiltrations who have Community Organization training. It is not the Tiongs who are being made use of; it is those bleeding heart liberals who are being used to fulfil another purpose.

Thank God the PRCs have learned something positive from the Lee family Temasek Holding daughter in law Ho Ching............

Don't underestimate the PRC Chinese. This was the mistake made by the PAP and it cost Sporean taxpayers billions in the Suzhou affair.

Even today the actual losses are a state secret:rolleyes:

In the past I would get angry with the front end staff of various gov't agencies because of their silly procedures.
However nowadays I don't get angry & just try to avoid dealing with them.

These people are just cogs in the system. No one is going to sacrifice their rice bowl by rocking the boat
The only way to improve things is to start at the top. Having more opposition in parliament is probably the only way to improve things in Spore.

Sadly PT is now in their orbit as well. Sad to see the way this is going.

Maruah which started off as an apolitical NGO was gazetted as a Political association in 2012 and subsequently moved into ISA territory and now closer with F8, they are not driving the agenda. These people are actually social activists but they have so circumscribed by the Govt and they have little avenue to move. And yo can see the Govt prefers for them to play in the political space so it easier to deal with them.

The SDP - F8 - Maruah axis is now a concern. Has this Govt changed the park rules that these people are all conveniently in the same sandpit.

this is one tiong I admire.

fight for their rights and got balls.

Even though you guys are urines, well done chaps!

Actually, pap's hope of support from all these new citizens from China / India can backfire. Their 'new' votes are not guaranteed. Can swing both ways........... these new citizens maybe grateful for the opportunity but they are not fools or sheep like those 60.1

The other day, I walked past St Andrew's cathedral and most of the bus drivers stopping at the bus stops were PRCs.

Some of these PRC drivers do perform yeoman service, but there are those who are reckless, apathetic, materialistic, ignorant, lazy, unwilling to learn language and customs or adapt, etc etc. Just generally not up to the mark which is expected of them.

If the strike was about a genuine case of worker abuse or exploitation I would give them full kudos.

Unfortunately that was hardly the case. The contract terms had been spelt out beforehand. The tiongs are also not that stupid as to be ignorant of the fact that the only reason they r hired is because they are cheap

Interesting point and one of these liberal bleeding heart is none other than Vincent Wijaysingha. He fights for foreigners but does not say much about locals. I advocate a Singapore for Singaporeans and at this stage, I cant give rats ass about how foreigners are treated etc. Singaporeans have a harder time and foreigners can always go home like those mudlanders etc.

I think they over reached their hand on the basis that they had the numbers to make an impact on the transport service. They must also have gotten a false sense of confidence when some of our bleeding hearts reached out to them.

Interestingly despite all these companies owned by the same entity - Temasek, lessons learnt in the past have not been passed down. SIA recruited the first full batch of PRC stewardesses more 15 years ago. It was a monumental disasters. After handling FT batches from other countries they were confident but were shocked by the PRC batch. The programme was stopped. In later years it was done differently.

SIA cabin crew training is demanding especially the discipline and even then they could not get them to change their ways.

Look at SIA and Tiger. Same family. Imagine the Australian aviation authorities suspending the company.

Unfortunately that was hardly the case. The contract terms had been spelt out beforehand. The tiongs are also not that stupid as to be ignorant of the fact that the only reason they r hired is because they are cheap
