Both are humble and seem to be genuinely interested to serve

Miss Tracy,

If I tell you ... Png Eng Huat was the one who came from a richer family, made no impression in school, did not mix well with his school mates, did not mix well with his NS mates, would you believe me?

Good response!

that was my honest response.

that's why it is important for those who know the truth of pap's evil schemes to correct any false statements by the pap or MSM. otherwise, many singaporeans will believe what the pap or MSM said.

that's what happened before the advent of social and new media when the pap had total control of the media. for the first 40years, singaporeans believed what the pap said. nowadays, with Singaporeans sharing the truth, the pap has lost its credibility and is in hasty retreat.

unless the pap learns to speak the truth, knowing that Singaporeans are ready to refute them, they will continue to face the wrath and scepticism of singaporeans

Both were in the same year in RI.
1. One came from much poorer family background compared to the other
2. One made an impression in school and one did not.
3. One mixed well with his school cohort and one did not.
4. One did his NS in the Army and the other did it in the Police
5. One mixed well with his NS mates and the other was quiet and aloof
6. One speaks well in public and the other does not.
7. One connects easily with the people and the other struggles.
8. One had to hold a national conversation to find out the country's issues, while the other presumably walked the ground, went online and formed views.

Guess which is which. Becareful and think thru.

Ps. Courtesy of an RI boy after a recent reunion who watched both his classmates go thru life.

1. PEH vs HSK
2. HSK vs PEH

They both indeed are humble. Png came from slightly better off family but still considered modest. The family funded his overseas trip after he left Poly. He attended Peck Seah Primary (the school with one of first lift) and Heng came from Bukit Merah North Primary School. For secondary they headed to RI. Heng kept to himself while Ong mixed freely. During NS, out of the cohort, Heng was the same again preferring to keep to himself unlike Png, though shy was a team player.

Heng is a reluctant politician while Png is not. His classmates were surprised that Heng agreed to stand because of his aloofness.

Png was first recognised as someone with potential by one of the respected political observer and researcher during GE2011. That came across clearly in Punggol BE after he secured Hougang.

The issue with Heng came to the fore over the organising of the National Conversation and I guess for many observers including his classmates this was his litmus test as he was given charge of it. As you know it blew up spectacularly when netizens began publishing photos of the sessions and using graphics arrows to point and name attendees who turned out to be YPAP, grassroots leaders with PA and known friends of the PAP. Cries of Kelong were heard. Even the Ang Mo new citizen turned out to be member of the PAP as he was captured campaigning in PAP colours and holding a placard. They even listed the positions they hold within the various branches of PAP.

The result is that the National Conversation has been thoroughly discredited and Heng is now damaged at least in the eyes of his classmates. WHy hoodwink the public?

One would have thought that the lesson would be learnt. Then this week, he gave an interview where he claimed that National Conversation was a success as a number of issue were picked up there. He also conveniently de-linked the disastrous White Paper as though there was no over-lap. Belmont Lay who is Nicole Seah's hubby who tends to write over the top, did a wonderful job about Heng's claim. He tore Heng apart. The article was really good and scathing. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/the-flipside/national-conversation-going-073307342.html#more-id

The point is that the issues have long been identified. It is being played out daily on online forums, even on the forum page of the SCM. Yet we have a cabinet minister who is making claims that is beyond the pale. Even Hong Lim has seen these concerns expressed. What do you the protestors in Hong Lim were doing - having a picnic.

That list by his classmate is the outcome. A sign of disappointment and in a way not a surprise as he did not mix with anyone. The trust is with Png to carry the flame for Singaporeans.

Here is the article in full by Belmont Lay.

In "The FlipSide", local blogger Belmont Lay lets loose on local politics, culture and society. To be taken with a pinch of salt and parental permission is advised. In this post, he talks about how Our Singapore Conversation has stopped talking to the people.
For the uninitiated, we're officially at the halfway mark of Our Singapore Conversation (OSC), a year-long chit chat to get Singaporeans to open up and say what they feel.
And for those who think like me, OSC has always appeared kind of redundant because I thought the Internet has all along allowed Singaporeans to wear their hearts on their sleeve.
Anyways, the second phase is about to be rolled out in late March. It will zoom in on what makes Singaporeans feel like they belong here, and it's expected to take another six months to complete.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, here's a recap of how swimmingly well the national conversation has proceeded so far.
Insights galore
After six gruelling months of getting participants to sit in circles and scribble on mahjong paper and white boards, the national conversation has yielded numerous groundbreaking themes.
Don't believe me? Check out three of the 12 main themes that have emerged:
"A Singapore that is Affordable to Live in"
"A Society where Everyone Can Age with Dignity"
"A Society That Takes Care of the Disadvantaged"
Oh my goodness. We wouldn't have guessed, would we?
High cost of living, graceful ageing and helping the underprivileged -- all these themes that have been talked about to death on the Internet is finally being acknowledged. And they can actually be paraphrased another way. With capitalisation.
It is, therefore, better late than never for the government to heed the calls of the Internet community.
A more consultative government
But what's up with this change of heart where people's views are not being taken for granted anymore?
Let's look back to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's National Day Message 2012.
He said: "Think seriously about our future, contribute your ideas and work together to make it happen. Singapore must keep improving... If we stand still, we will fall behind… But if we adapt to changes and exploit new opportunities, we will thrive."
It was from this comment about contributing ideas that the seeds of the national conversation were sown.
To further illustrate his commitment to a consultative style of governance, PM Lee acknowledged the changing political landscape and this need to work with the people in a collaborative fashion in an interview with The Washington Post just last week.
He said: “It’s a different generation, a different society, and the politics will be different. We have to work in a more open way. We have to accept more of the untidiness and the to-ing and fro-ing, which is part of normal politics.”
So, how open and untidy is this normal politics of to-ing and fro-ing now?
Oh my goodness again. We wouldn't have guessed, would we?
The government pushed out the Population White Paper with a hugely unpopular 6.9 million population target, beat us over the head with it and passed it in Parliament, amid widespread derision and opposition -- all in a week's time.
I mean, if this is the process of normal politics, it only makes one wonder what abnormal politics with little to-ing and fro-ing looks like.
What is Singapore's vision?

The most pressing problem for Singaporeans now is that they feel left out because they don't really feel like they have a say as to where this country is going.
The people can say one thing and the government will do something else. It is almost as if they were both going down two separate paths.
Once in a while they might intersect and this is where the fabled meeting of minds will occur.
And where the two paths diverge, I guess we can call it the ongoing process of consultation.
Maybe this national conversation is less about what Singaporeans want but more about learning how to speak the language of the government.
Belmont Lay is the editor of New Nation, a publication that has been engaging its readers in an ongoing conversation for more than two years.

Good information. Thanks.

Wish someone can confirm the PAP Exco's mood these days with the huge swing against the pap and the swing continues unabated. Rumours are coming in dribs and drabs. Is there any clear picture emerging? any young turks who are fighting for Singaporeans from within the pap against the pap's pro-foreigner faction?

In other words Heng despite his seemingly humble background with more than ample opportunities to mix with commoners turned out aloof. His disconnect from the ground via national conversation and white papers is the hallmark of PAP's aloofness.

PNG remains miles ahead in terms of connecting with ordinary folks and immediately grasping their concern

Yet Heng is paid millions and png is not.

You might not have to wait long. Seah's Little Speck article posted in this forum says a lot and I cannot but think that there is going to a crisis meeting of some sort on the issue of leadership.

in any established political party, LHL leadership wld be very precarious now for the booboos he did. i wld be very surprised if no one in the pap is lobbying to oust him. it only shows that the pap is made up of followers, followers of the LEE Dynasty

Heng was PPS to LKY so how does that fit in?

HSK was disciplined but not ambitious. He stuck to the technical of his core competency. Old man does not like bombastic and loud characters. Its for all these reasons that he attended up in MAS - central banker, cautious and meticulous. Similar to Lim Siong Guan who is known for his technical competency and not politics. Siong Guan was old man's first PPS.
