Sorry, i think this would be a flame bait, but i really cannot find sufficient info on this elsewhere....

Currently, i am looking at work opportunities in oz, but am concerned about the bad press wrt the country at the mo (cost of living, anti asian, etc). Couple of questions:

1. How much salary is recommended to live relatively well, most prob in sua pa area, as my skills is applicable in the mining / petrolchemical industry. Other perks that I should ask for?

2. Advisable to consider going there now? Nett household income is prob going to be lower than sing for us as a family.. but thought it would be a good change, before my baby is school going age.

thanks.

i recommend you work for BHP, the largest mining co in the world. they are supplying ores to China. so business will be good. always discount the press by 50%.

living in the sua pa areas should be rather cheap....i can't tell you the exact figures, maybe you go real estates co for help, but you have to pay them a month rent or 2.

methinks the great outbacks will be a great place for your children to grow up, instead of silly shopping shopping shopping in sgp, which adds no values to your child development. they will grow up like normal OZ kids instead of material boys or girls. spore is not really a good place to raise kids.

highly recommend you go for it. please let us know your progress once you settle down okay?

all the best!

If what you had read are derived from local press then you can probably brush off what they had wrote...they have you believe that only sinking land here is Shangri La on earth...

Thanks. Actually, I will go over only on a working visa. Not sure about the status of the visa approval, but I am leaving it to the head hunter to sort it out. I am not brave enough to go over without something on the table. Most of the companies will sponsor for citizenship after 2 years, I will decide if I should take it up later.

I do have some contacts for jobs in WA and Vic, as my skill set is more technical and specialised, I think there are not too many people with such skills, but that also means there are not so many positions :p

Currently, I think the market rate is prob bet 70k - 150k pa, depending on whether i am prepared to travel or be based at 1 location, and whether I am working in the mining industry. I know this is above the ave oz pay which is about 60k pa.

Travelling means I am away while my wife and son stays at home, all alone in a foreign country w/o the social support that she is so used to in singapore. moreover, this situation is more of a "want" and not a "need". We can survive in Sing anyway.

I certainly dun want to go over and struggle to put food on the table every month - that would be a regressive step. That is why I am asking for advice wrt the situation and the living expenses. I do not crave material things, but I also dont want to put my family thru hardship.... although definition of "hardship" varies from person to person....

cheers
