In those good old days, the famous brand was MARMITE. Sadly, never had the chance to taste it.
Ours was the humble "Chiam-Thau Loti" or Frech loaf and home-made egg kaya or the cheap Coconut Brand Kaya or Serkaya.
The best off course came from the bearded ("Bayi Loti Janggut") who'd come on his rickety bicycle with a special wooden box mounted behind in which there was bread, triangular curry-puffs, suji and much more. He would sell the bread with Planta margarine and kaya from huge tins. Real cheap and appetising. Yummyyyyyyy.
Fortunately we did not reach a stage where we ate ikan-selar-kuning porridge with sauce or where our poor mother had to eat the head, bones and tails of the fish". Neither did we had any uncle who gave us a tin of biscuits free-of-charge.
Hearing the sad stories made me feel very guilty for I, as a son of a daily-rated coolie had much better breakfast then a son of a farmer cum bus driver.
