Even if the Hammerrhoids suddenly feel the urge to say sorry to the hawkers right now, it’s already too late.
“Sorry boh pakeh!”
The Hammerrhoids should have just apologised to the hawkers earlier so that they can simply move on and close the case. A simple apology would give everyone a simple excuse to forgive and forget. The hawkers have been waiting for the Hammerrhoids to give them an excuse to forgive and forget, and to move on. But without any avail after waiting so long-long.
But to do so now, would be a political suicide.
If the Hammerrhoids were to say sorry now, the public would rightly perceive that the Hammerrhoids were being ORDERED to apologise by the PAP, after PAP has publicly issued a directive commanding them to do so. Such an extremely overdue ‘apology’ would be viewed as insincere, reluctant, enforced and made against their free will. How can anyone possibly accept such a wayang ‘apology’?
Now, the Hammerrhoids have forced themselves into a dead corner. They have to fight to the very bitter end to never, never say sorry just as the Japanese have fought equally hard to never, never say sorry for World War 2.
To justify that they do not have the slightest bits to apologise to any single damn soul in this world or in any other worlds, the Hammerroids have to prove that they are totally faultless and absolutely perfect in handling this dispute. They have to prove that it is never their fault but everybody and every animal and every other thing fault: PAP’s fault, NEA’s fault, hawkers’ fault, patrons’ fault, residents’ fault, architects’ fault, rats’ fault, birds’ fault, wind fault, etc, etc….
Mission Impossible? Let’s hope that the Hammerrhoids will not have to end up issuing a very belated, tearful but useless apology such as this one:
