LAGOS (BLOOMBERG) - Nigeria will become the first nation to ground flights on Monday (May 9) as surging prices for aviation fuel make business unprofitable.

Airline operators "will discontinue operations nationwide" until further notice, their union said in a statement. It is the latest sign of the widespread impact that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is having, although one carrier, Ibom Airlines, opted out of the cessation, citing obligations to customers.

The war has caused massive disruption to energy markets, with Russian feedstocks used to produce jet fuel and diesel becoming untouchable for many parts of the world.

China has also cut its oil product export quota, limiting supplies. The loss of 3.2 million barrels a day of refining capacity in the pandemic years also does not help.

Nigeria's 23 airlines say they have been "subsidising" flights for the past four months and can no longer absorb the costs after the price of aviation fuel more than tripled to 700 naira (S$2.33) per litre.

Jet fuel makes up a significant proportion of input costs for airlines. Any change in expenses can drive up ticket prices that could put travellers off, especially in price-sensitive markets.

"Many of the airlines are running at a loss already," said Mr Victor Enwezor, vice-president of operations at Lagos-based tour operator Leisure Afrique. "Any further price hike will kill their business," he said by phone.

This summer, global jet fuel demand is set to rise by more than a third as air travel ramps up, surpassing six million barrels a day, according to the latest forecast from BloombergNEF.

Grounding flights could hurt Africa's biggest economy, where the International Monetary Fund already forecasts growth will slow this year and next.

It is not clear what the solution is. In March, following meetings with the government, the Nigerian National Petroleum agreed to grant licences to airlines to import fuel to boost supply and possibly bring down costs.

That has not changed the situation. High Jet-A1 prices have pushed up the unit cost per seat for a one-hour flight in the West African nation to an average of 120,000 naira, 71 per cent higher than the cheapest option, the union said. Many operators are caught in a bind: increasing prices too much will cut customer numbers and still won't cover costs.

"Cost of aviation fuel has continued to rise unabated, thereby creating huge pressure on the sustainability of operations and financial viability of the airlines," the union said. "The airlines can no longer absorb the pressure."

In a statement, Ibom said that having been paid by customers in advance for flight bookings "we are bound by contract to deliver the services already paid for, to avoid exposing the airline to the risk of avoidable litigation".

Nigeria's aviation ministry is engaging stakeholders "in positions to provide succour to the airlines", to find ways to ameliorate the situation, Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika said in a statement on the ministry's Facebook page.

"We wish to appeal to the airline operators, even in the difficult situation, to consider the multiplier effect of shutting down operations, on Nigerians and global travellers," Mr Sirika said. "We are greatly concerned about the difficulties being faced by the airline operators."

Nigeria got no citizens' monies in sovereign wealth fund to prop up its national airline.
PAP government is using the SG citizens' monies (through GIC and Temasek) to prop up SIA, first during the pandemic when there were no passengers and no flights, and now when fuel prices are high.

If there were no citizens' monies, SIA would have been bankrupt shortly after the pandemic. it was bleeding $1 billion every quarter.

If the PAP gave subsidies like jiuhu or niggeria, we would not have any money left in our sovereign funds.

If PAP would run Sg in true market economy instead of introducing distortions, we would have no need for subsidising SIA nor will any airline not competitive enough, go bankrupt.
The further PAP continues, the distortions will get ever more extreme and when an eventual trigger happens, say bye bye to Sg.

Fucking irony. Nigeria is the biggest oil producer in Africa. All lining the pockets of their junta leaders or siphoned by Winnie ?

There is no shortage of kerosene used in jets. You do not see queues forming at gas stations for petrol or diesel.
The current price increase is purely speculative,.
There will be no demand for petrol or diesel during summer as prices are too high and US citizens spending power have been curtailed by higher interest rates and it seems, exuberant price increases.

It maybe biggest oil producer but refined petroleum products follow that dictated by international markets like everything else.
Jiu hu loses money everytime oil prices goes up as it subdidise too much and this will affect their currency in the long term. It has to pay petronas world market prices for the products and sell it cheap locally.

So how will canceling flights help? The airlines pivot to do Grab deliveries? Haha
Policies in nigeria does not encourage business development.
Those airline bosses i bet borrowed more than what the planes costs and now will just let the companies fail and bank swallow the losses.
Nigerian airlines are badly managed and their planes are filthy. That means owners are not interested in running the business but only wanted to scam the banks..high borrowings makes business unworkable.

SIA raised over $20billion and workfare grants, most of which from our state coffers.

Isn't that subsidizing too?

Definitely. But most of that money go to banks , maybe local banks that financed those brand new planes.

PAP has run Singapore in true market economy in most cases. We have subsidies mainly for healthcare, housing and education.

Our neighbours, indon and jiuhu, have often given subsidies for petrol, electricity tariffs, cooking oil, rice and sugar. This has led to massive wastage, corruption and huge losses on their national budgets. Now, even chicken was added for price controls in jiuhu during the recent Raya festive period. Those are the market distortions that you speak of.

The insidious distortion to market goes deeper than subsidies. Any economist worth their salt will know what I'm talking about.

Subsidies are market distortions. And it's other countries who have huge budget deficits and empty coffers, not Singapore.

Which is better? Empty coffers or empty pockets of citizens?

Empty coffers means the country has no money left to import in basic necessities. Look at Sri Lanka. There are still a lot of rich people there. But the reserves are empty and there is no means to import in food and medicine.

If PAP run the country like you wished and gave out lots and lots of freebies and subsidies, we would be like Sri Lanka today.

Your binary thinking of either/or is precisely what PAP does and will result in as much misery for it's population.
