It rather unprofessional and undiplomatic of him to do so because this signal that he recognized Japan ownership of the disputed Island. I am starting to wonder if he knows what he is saying . It no wonder he offended China. The more diplomatic way to handle it is to refer the disputed island as Diaoyu/Senkakus combined to show impartiality.
