Masagos: My promotion to Minister due to meritocracy, not race

It was announced on 8 Apr that Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs Masagos Zulkifli would be promoted to become a full Minister with effect from yesterday (9 Apr).

He was appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and will continue in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Second Minister in both ministries, MHA and MFA.

In an interview with the media on 8 Apr, Mr Masagos told reporters that his promotion to full Minister is a testament to how Singapore is run on the basis of meritocracy.

Mr Masagos said, “I think this is also how Singapore runs on the basis of meritocracy. That you get the post, and are rewarded for your performance and contributions because of the impact you have made. Not because you are close to a particular person or that you are the son of somebody.”

“I think this is important because it gives you the credibility to the people you serve as well as your colleagues. And I’m glad that this is the system that we have,” he added.

On being the second Malay minister in the Cabinet, Mr Masagos said, “We carry out our duties with integrity to make sure we discharge our responsibilities fully for the sake of Singapore and Singaporeans. I think that should be the focus of what we do, whether or not there are two, three or more ministers in the future. That must be something we earn, and not something we get as a matter of right.”
“It is good to see more and more Malays doing very well in education, doing very well in all fields of their professions and even in Government, and I’m very happy for that. But more importantly, whoever gets appointed, whatever position, we must earn it.”

ON HOW HIS APPOINTMENT CAME ABOUT
“I had a message from my PA when I was in Oman that the PM would like to meet me on Monday, and to me, this is not unusual as he does have meetings and lunches sometimes.”

“So I went there and we talked about the potential for our SMEs and TLCs to participate in the new industrial areas that are turning up. At the same time, I shared my concern of the conflict in the Middle East and how it is getting much worse than it was before.”
“But in the midst of all these things, he also made an announcement to me that he wants to promote me as a full Minister.”

“I’m thankful to Prime Minister for this affirmation of the contributions that I’ve made for the last eight years. It has been a very long journey. I truly enjoyed it, but most important, felt I really benefited from the experience.”

“That he now wants to appoint me to be a full minister, I thank him for that. At the same time, I was told that my two ministers DPM Teo Chee Hean and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam also lent their full support to my promotion. I thank all of them for the support that they have given me.”

Going forward, Mr Masagos believes that as a full Minister, particularly in Foreign Affairs, he will get better access to people and ministers of higher rank so that the interests of Singapore can be better delivered.

Haha. That's a good one.

He should have added "wife of somebody" just to be safe.

Promotion by meritocracy? The entire article did not tell us how extraordinary your performance is except that you just get call up one day and your promotion is supported by DPMTeo n K Shamugam. I am relating that statement more to having good rapport and relationship. Are you capable of writing something related to what you claim? It is not very difficult seriously. Show us your real merit.. show us some real comtribution and how it impact instead.

This speech should be made by PM not Mango-sago. There is no need for him to emphasize that his promotion is due to meritocracy as though there were ministers who are not. You have to be confident in yourself. But I respect his honesty and candidness on how he was told that he was promoted. I guess that is a important trait for a Minister. Too many ministers speak the politically correct answers, but don't speak from their hearts.

Just like my neighbour chegku son, a long time back, when I ask him, why he never did N.S., he said " he was a bumiputra". They should have awarded him that million bucks, why wait till 2015, to pay these bumiputras million dollars?

Son of what soil? Singapore is not Indonesia. Masago is an Indonesian name you CCB! :oIo: Even Malays in Malaysia accept and that they are not native to Malaysia. Why are you Mats in Singapore trying to proclaim yourselves as natives to Singapore? The majority of you Mats trace your ancestry to Indonesia and a large percentage to Malaysia. How many of you Mats can trace your ancestry to only Singapore? Stop asking for free rides and handouts! If you are not happy then go back to Indonesia or Malaysia. Stop pretending you are son of this soil and making ridiculous claims that history does not substantiate. You are only causing trouble and rightly you should go back to where your forefathers came from.

This guy is thick skinned:

This guy really has a damn thick skin and ultra arrogant like all thrpe other PLPs. No one who is in that position will think that he deserves promotion because he did better than the other MPs. As far as his contribution is concerned to the entire citizenry, it seems there is none to be singled out that is praiseworthy. Perhaps our entire Malay Community may be a better judge of his performance as a minority representation as PAP likes the citizenry to believe that GRC is motted to give fail representation of the minority and not for PAP undue adv over opposition Parties and a vehicle to sneak in the young PLPs and arrogant scholarship holders.

Many including the ” minorities ” in PAP linguoare convinced that PAP’s GRC twarts the nationhood as it keeps reminding Singaporeans not as Singaporens but Singapore Chine, Singapore Malays, Singapore Indians ( perhaps this is one of the reason that makes Babu more attached to the Indians in India Naduland than to Singapore? Is such mentality of treason his inherent dislyalty to Singapore or catalysed by the constant reninder by PAP that he is Indian before Singaporean. Let us say no to PAP policy of separatist mentality but yes to all of us as Singaporeans speaking Singlish mixed intimately with all our individual mother tongues as a well mixed broth!

Considering this arrogant PAPplp, the very fact that he thinks he is promoted on merit strongly suggested his zero confidence in himself and this mean he is incompetent, unsure and a plp!

Majority of the Professors in NUS and NTU who got promoted by plping and these are the blokes who try to show how good they are by talking down and always defensive. In contrast, the very few Professors who are promoted by their international recognition in their field of studies are confident to the extent that they aren’t afraid to admit things they do not know unlike the plp Professors who would try to con their way thru !

Mat! Fuck off to Indonesia or where ever it is you came from. Singapore does not belong to Malays. Don't make up ridiculous lies that you are son of this soil. The majority of you have ancestry in Indonesia. Malays in Malaysia accept they are not native to Malaysia but you CB Mats here in Singapore like to spread trouble and make ridiculous claims that Singapore belongs to Malays. History and current affairs in Malaysia show clearly that you are talking straight up from your ass. Pack up your bags and take the next ferry south to where ever you came from.

The manner of the announcement of his promotion shows that it is purely to milk the Malay votes.

In none of the official statements by anyone is there a listing of his achievements, performance, contributions - and the clown thinks that he is being promoted on these criteria.

In being promoted, he is saying that NONE of the other MPs in the PAP are as good as he is in achieving whatever unmentioned achievements...
