Man Utd make new £55m bid for Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria

MANCHESTER UNITED have launched an astonishing £55million bid for Real Madrid star and Paris St-Germain target Angel Di Maria.

By: Anthony ChapmanPublished: Fri, August 8, 2014

Man Utd have made a fresh bid for Angel Di Maria

According to reports in South America, the Argentina international is ready to part ways with the Champions League winners after Carlo Ancelotti signed Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez after the World Cup, and Di Maria has his heart set on a switch to either France or England.

PSG earlier announced that they were no longer in the running for the ex-Benfica man's signature, with president Nasser Al Khelaifi said: "We discussed Angel Di Maria with Real Madrid. He was very expensive and we have stopped discussions."

Manchester United fire sale! These six misfits are heading for the Old Trafford exit... but where are they going?
Marouane Fellaini, Nani and Shinji Kagawa among those on the way out
New manager Louis van Gaal will carry on revolutionising the squad
Javier Hernandez attracting interest from Juventus and Tottenham
United having trouble offloading the likes of Anderson

Louis van Gaal has wasted no time in revolutionising Manchester United on his arrival at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has bought exciting new additions to the fold in Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera, with more new faces in the pipeline. The squad will have a very different feel to it regardless of signings, though, as Van Gaal is just as intent on clearing out the deadwood.

1407578806354_wps_1_PASADENA_CA_JULY_22_Manag.jpg

Meet the new boss: Louis van Gaal will be shipping out some familiar faces in his Old Trafford revolution. During the club's successful pre-season tour, the new manager admitted there would be several casualties of his squad revamp.

He said: 'I shall make judgements after this tour. 'I have let all the players play and I know now more than before the tour.
'Now also it is a little bit soon to judge but in football you have to judge. You have to give the player a chance to make a transfer when I see that his prospects to play are not so high. 'You have to say it in advance because it’s too late after August 31. I will tell payers after the tour.'

Here, Sportsmail assesses who will be cast aside in the new United, and which clubs will be able to pick up the pieces.

Marouane Fellaini
The Belgian was United's sole signing last summer, and his mediocre performances in the middle of the park became synonymous with David Moyes' dismal reign.
How much: United expect to take a hit on the £27.5million they paid and want £20million but will do well to get £15million.
Who's interested: Napoli but not at the asking price. A subsidised loan suits them but they are already weighing up alternatives.
Flop: Marouane Fellaini became synonymous with David Moyes' disastrous reign at Old Trafford

Hernandez
'Chicharito' has an impressive goals to games ratio in a United shirt, but his detractors suggest he needs more to his game. He's well behind the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie in the pecking order and will find more opportunities elsewhere.
How much: £12million would be the Mexican's price ideal but United expect closer to £10million.
Who's interested: Juventus and Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Tottenham and Southampton are just some of the clubs to have expressed an interest.
Poacher: But Javier Hernandez, battling against Liverpool, could be surplus to requirements

Anderson
The Portuguese has failed to live up to his reputation, with a torrid spell at Old Trafford rife with injury. With no pre-season form behind him, by now he is well down the list of Louis van Gaal's midfielders.
How much: United are struggling to find takers even at a knockdown £5million.
Who's interested: Clubs in Portugal and Brazil have shown interest but little else. His displays on loan at Fiorentina did little to impress. Anderson may be difficult to shift.
Dead wood: Man United are facing trouble in getting rid of out-of-favour midfielder Anderson

Nani
The mercurial winger has had a career of ups and downs at Old Trafford, but it may finally be time to move on. His frustratingly inconsistent displays, along with a incompatibility with Van Gaal's wing-backs system means his United number is up.
How much: A new five year deal raised his value last season but price will be around £12million to £15million.
Who's interested: Juventus, Inter Milan, Valencia and Arsenal still rate the Portuguese winger despite his inconsistency.
Best foot forward: Mercurial winger Nani, in action in pre-season, could be heading for the Old Trafford exit

Shinji Kagawa
Sir Alex Ferguson bought the hotly-tipped Japanese playmaker in from Borussia Dortmund to revolutionise the Red Devils' attacking threat. Although he has impressed in spells, injuries and the arrival of Juan Mata means Kagawa may have to look elsewhere for regular action.
How much: United will look to get around £8million to £10million for the Japanese playmaker.
Who's interested: Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp loves Kagawa. Atletico Madrid are interested too in a player who has looked resigned to leaving. Plenty interested in a loan.
Return of the prodigal son? Shinji Kagawa could be in line for a return to Borussia Dortmund
Shinji Kagawa and Gary Lineker in one of the strangest ads ever!

Wilfried Zaha
The winger was tipped as an England World Cup star on his arrival from Crystal Palace, but has failed to live up to the hype. Farmed out on loan to Cardiff last season and another who doesn't benefit from a wing-backs formation, his move to United may have been one gamble too far.
How much: United would do well to raise £10million and may prefer to send him out on loan and see if his value rises again.
Who's interested: West Ham, QPR, Crystal Palace and Newcastle would all take a chance on a player who has yet to show his potential.

Anderson is Brazilian and the way out is to let him see out what's left of his contract or terminate his services with a big payoff. Big disappointment. Gifted but lazy.

Zaha has disciplinary issues. Even Moyes can stomach it, never mine LVG. Another talent that will likely go to waste.

Moyes let Nani off the hook when he gave the nod for a new contract. No one will meet his wage demands except United. Get him off the books for good please.

The year United won the premier league, Kagawa told the Japanese press he wasn't happy with his performance and would seek to improve the following season. Marginal improvement at best and he's playing the same excuses before LVG. He'd be better off with a push cart selling jerseys in the streets of Tokyo. Park Ji Sung remains the best Asian player to have worn the United colors.

It's a pity Hernandez is on the list. He is a different type of striker that relies heavily on the services the midfield provides. If his impending departure is to make way for juniors like Wilson, I'm all for it.

Rafael is another player that's been mentioned. Thought they should look at Jonny Evans, probably the worst central defender in the premier league.

LVG needs a stopper, a ball winner in the center of the park. Vidal would be the obvious choice. His fierce combative style will likely see him pick up an injury at some point. That's probably the main concern of LVG with Vidal's knee. If it were left to SAF, he'd take the risk and leave those concerns for another day.

It makes no sense getting a player like Song who has been inconsistent with the Gunners and country, never mine Barca. Blind would be a good buy. Angel Di Maria is a great player but driven by greed-no pay, no play.

Man Utd Transfer News: Di Maria deal ON as Cuadrado, Hummels and Reus moves falter

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Louis Van Gaal has hailed Real Madrid's Angel Di Maria as moves for Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels and Marco Reus, as well as Fiorentina's Juan Cuadrado, look to be under threat.
August 10, 2014, by Anthony ChapmanPublishe

The Dutchman is keen to bring more faces to Old Trafford before the end of the current transfer window, and after submitting a £55million bid for Di Maria's services, Van Gaal has sung his praises after criticising his current crop of players.

The former Bayern Munich boss believes that United lack good wingers, using Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo as examples, prompting him to implement a 3-5-2 formation.

However, Di Maria played in the centre of midfield last season under Carlo Ancelotti, and Van Gaal is planning to utilise him there as he looks to sell Marouane Fellaini to Napoli.

Man Utd have made a £55m offer for Angel Di Maria

The new Red Devils boss is also hoping to bring in some new defenders, but one player who won't be making the move is Hummels.

The German has been handed the captaincy at Dortmund, with team-mate Reus becoming vice-captain.

Van Gaal could also miss out on Cuadrado, with Chelsea looking to make a bid for his services.

Fiorentina are trying to sign Marko Marin, and are ready to negotiate a swap deal plus cash with Jose Mourinho.

Man Utd manager Louis van Gaal makes winning start at Old Trafford
BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Marouane Fellaini's stoppage-time goal ensured Louis van Gaal's first home match in charge was a winning one as Manchester United completed their pre-season preparations with a 2-1 victory over Valencia.

The Belgian international, who has struggled for form since joining from Everton last summer, brought the Old Trafford crowd to its feet with his late effort, but the Dutch manager stayed seated, scribbling furiously on a sheaf of A4 paper as he continued to plot ahead of the season opener here against Swansea City on Saturday.

That was in keeping with his approach on an encouraging evening for United.

While Valencia coach Nuno Espirito Santo patrolled the touchline, Van Gaal remained on the bench even when Darren Fletcher opened the scoring with a deflected 49th-minute strike and when Valencia drew level with 19 minutes remaining.

But the 63-year-old was far from inconspicuous. How could he be when a battery of photographers were recording his every twitch?

Van Gaal sat next to Ryan Giggs (left) and fellow assistant Albert Stuivenberg. From the moment he emerged from the tunnel to a rousing reception, embraced mascot Fred the Red, and strode purposefully towards the dugouts while waving to the crowd, the erstwhile Netherlands coach was the centre of attention.

LVG.jpg

His reprise, 90 seconds after the second half began, saw Van Gaal high-fiving those in the front row of the stand as he walked past. Certainly, his stated aim of pleasing the supporters was being fulfilled.

There was no banner draped between the tiers of the stands in the manner of "The Chosen One" declaration that became a stick with which to beat predecessor David Moyes and no chants aimed towards Van Gaal apart from a murmur of approval that soundtracked much of what United did against their accomplished La Liga visitors.

Deployed in a 3-4-1-2 shape, United kept possession well and appeared to understand what the notoriously demanding coach was asking of them.

Midfielder Ander Herrera was combative and incisive as one of the central two, captain Wayne Rooney was lively despite missing a penalty and Fellaini offered an eye-catching cameo when he was introduced.

Van Gaal's record so far
WIN 7-0 v LA Galaxy

WIN 3-2 AS Roma

DRAW 0-0 Inter Milan

WIN 3-1 Real Madrid

WIN 3-1 Liverpool

WIN 2-1 Valencia

Question marks remain over the defence though, with the sporadic shakiness of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Tyler Blackett highlighting why United have made a £15.9m bid for Sporting Lisbon's Marcos Rojo.

Indeed, it was a slip in concentration by Jones that allowed Rodrigo Moreno to steal in at the back post and direct a cross beyond keeper David De Gea and equalise after Fletcher's fierce shot over the helpless Diego Alves had given the home side the lead.

The visiting goalkeeper was then culpable for the late winner, charging from his goal to claim a long Blackett ball only to clatter into a defender and allow Fellaini to control on his chest and roll into an empty net.

Man Utd: De Gea, James, Jones, Smalling, Blackett, Young, Fletcher, Herrera, Mata, Rooney, Hernandez. Subs: Amos, Cleverley, Kagawa, Fellaini, Lingard, Michael Keane, Januzaj.

Valencia: Diego Alves, Barragan, Vezo, Otamendi, Gaya, Parejo, Javi Fuego, Gomes, Feghouli, Alcacer, Rodrigo. Subs: Yoel, Piatti, Joao Pereira, De Paul, Guardado, Orban, Mustafi, Vinicius Araujo, Robert, Carles Gil, Domenech Jaume.

Manchester United close to signing Daley Blind for £20m after breakthrough in talksLouis van Gaal wants to bring in Dutch midfielder
Blind could join United for around £20million
Barcelona have also shown interest in Blind but United now favourites
Van Gaal also close to signing Marcos Rojo

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ind-20m-breakthrough-talks.html#ixzz3AFFS8vhD

Manchester United believe they have made a breakthrough in their attempts to land Holland international Daley Blind.

Manager Louis van Gaal, who is also hot on the trail of Sporting Lisbon centre-back, Marcos Rojo, wants Blind to join his Old Trafford revolution.
And United chiefs were last night growing increasingly confident of striking a deal with Ajax for the versatile Dutchman, who is valued at £20million.

The one that got away: Van Gaal had also been interested in Thomas Vermaelen, but Barcelona got their man

United target Daley Blind scores a 30 yard beauty against Utrecht Van Gaal has been forced to look elsewhere in his pursuit of central defenders after Thomas Vermaelen chose Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund's refusal to consider selling Mats Hummels.

Blind impressed in Holland's World Cup campaign under Van Gaal, and the new United manager wants the 24-year-old with him next season.
Ajax manager Frank de Boer has admitted he is open to selling Blind this summer, saying: 'If he goes to a big club then he has definitely deserved it.
'But I think it would be better if he stays one year. Last year was a good year for him but I think he can improve a lot with us.

Could move: Blind has admitted that a move to one of Europe's top clubs would be too good to turn down
Impressive: Blind, who scored against Brazil at the World Cup, could continue to improve at Ajax, said De Boer
Signing: Louis van Gaal wants to make Blind part of his Old Trafford revolution as soon as possible

'If a club comes along with a lot of money it is almost impossible to say no. But we won’t let him go for free that is for sure.
'It is important for the player and the club that there is no tension or that it happens at the last minute.'

Blind himself said: 'I am happy here in Amsterdam. But if there comes another club I will have to think about it and then we will see. I will think about my options. For now I will focus on Ajax and we will see what happens next week.'

Reds look to Rojo as injuries mount
Aug 12, 2014 22:32 http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...o-injuries-mount-7604177#.U-qNa2MycDw.twitter

Louis van Gaal is poised to buy Argentine defender Marcos Rojo, with Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Jonny Evans doubtful for Saturday.

214 Shares Share Tweet +1 Email Manchester United are on the brink of an eve of season capture of Argentina World Cup defender Marcos Rojo.

The Reds have made a £16m bid for the 24-year-old from Sporting Lisbon and are waiting an answer to their offer for the player who played for the South Americans in Brazil in the final against winners Germany.

Rojo was reported to have refused to train with the Portuguese side in a personal bid to force through the move to United.

Reds boss Louis van Gaal has been looking to add to his defensive-wing back department even before Luke Shaw, Jonny Evans and Antonio Valencia were ruled out of Tuesday night’s final warm up win against Spanish side Valencia with injuries.

The pair are doubts for the Premier League opener at Old Trafford on Saturday against Swansea City.

United lost out in an effort to get Thomas Vermaelen who moved to Barcelona from Arsenal and have hit a brick wall in a bid to lure Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund.

They still hope to entice Daley Blind from Ajax before the transfer window shuts but are close to nailing the surprise swoop for Rojo who can operate in central defence, left back or wing back.

Meanwhile LVG was delighted to open his Old Trafford account with a 2-1 win against Valencia in a game he described as United’s worst of the pre-season that saw Darren Fletcher score and Marouane Fellaini grab a late winner.

“Old Trafford was fantastic. I come on the pitch and they are shouting and screaming your name. It is also a big pressure as they expect a lot and you cannot change everything in three or four weeks,” said van Gaal.

“The players cannot change either so we have to wait and see and develop and we need time but we have won every game until now and that is fantastic when you see our opponents so we have great confidence for Swansea City.

“The main thing is that we have won in spite of playing our worst game. We made a lot of wrong choices, wrong passes and we didn’t press too much.

“But in spite of that I think Valencia is a very good team, very comfortable on the ball so it is not easy to press but in spite of that we have dominated the game and at the end we are the winner because we are fighting until the last minute and that is also a good signal.

“It is a start. We had four debuts so I am pleased we have won the game against a very good team.”

Manchester United's Danny Welbeck a transfer target for Hull as Old Trafford bench looms

Tigers poised to sell Long and launch club-record raid for England striker who looks set to struggle for game-time if Van Gaal starts Rooney and Van Persie

Hull are ready to make a record-busting move for Manchester United’s England World Cup striker Danny Welbeck.

Steve Bruce will have to pay around £14million for Welbeck, who has been told his chances of first-team action will be limited under new boss Louis van Gaal just weeks after he started for the Three Lions against Italy and Uruguay in Brazil.

Bruce is after a replacement for Shane Long, who is a shock £12m target for Southampton just months after joining the Yorkshire side from West Brom in the January window.

And the Tigers' chief hopes Van Gaal will make a bold decision and cash in on Welbeck as he re-shapes the Old Trafford giants' squad with players of his own choosing.

Welbeck wants to keep himself in England manager Roy Hodgson’s plans, with Euro 2016 qualifying getting under way next month.

New United captain Wayne Rooney and Van Gaal's Holland World Cup skipper Robin van Persie are already pencilled in as the forward line in the Dutchman's 3-5-2 formation.

And with no European football this season to stretch the squad, Welbeck will likely spend a lot of Premier League time on the bench.

Hull were surprised by the Saints;' interest in Long and are actively chasing a striker to take over from the Republic of Ireland international, with Welbeck at the top of the list and Watford's Troy Deeney an alternative.

Elsewhere, United have suffered a devastating injury blow with Luke Shaw ruled out for a minimum of four weeks before he has kicked a ball in anger for his new club.

After being castigated by Van Gaal over his fitness levels and made to train on his own, left-back Shaw has now been struck down with a hamstring injury.

Coming before he has made his competitive debut after a huge £30m move from Southampton, the blow will merely add fuel to the flames fanned by Old Trafford’s new manager.

Shaw was due to play against Valencia on Tuesday night, but was pulled out of the final pre-season friendly of the summer after picking up the knock in training.

Van Gaal is now certain to pursue his interest in Argentina World Cup star Marcos Rojo.

Manchester United bans tablets and laptops at home matches

Manchester United fans are being advised to leave large gadgets at home
Manchester United has banned fans from bringing tablets and laptops to football matches at its stadium.

The club said it was reacting to "security intelligence", adding the restriction was in line with new checks on electronic equipment at airports.

It said that unlike at airports, it would be "impractical" at the stadium to check the devices were genuine by asking for them to be powered up.

Greater Manchester Police said it was not involved with the ban "in any way".

_76912189_b1a59652-fcaf-488e-9a1f-58ffde529efa.jpg

A statement on the club's site says the ban extends to large and small tablets "including iPad minis", as well as larger electronic devices.

Smartphones are still permitted as long as their dimensions are smaller than 15cm by 10cm (5.9in by 3.9in).

"The regulations at each stadium are a matter for the relevant stadium management authorities, however, the scale of Old Trafford and profile of Manchester United mean that the risk at this venue is unique," it adds.

A spokesman for the club told the BBC it had made the move after receiving "advice", but would not say from whom this had come.

He added the action was unrelated to concerns about fans using tablets to record video of matches, potentially blocking the view of others, as had been reported elsewhere.

A spokesman for the Premier League said: "This is not something we are responsible for or involved in."

A spokesman for the Football Association was unable to provide comment.

But Manchester United's rival Arsenal issued a statement: "Our ground regulations haven't changed. Our stadium management team are happy with our procedures."

The government announced in July that passengers flying to the US or elsewhere who passed through UK airports needed to show that devices carried in their hand luggage were charged and could be powered on. The move followed a warning that US officials had become aware of a "credible" unnamed terrorist threat.

The airport restrictions cover phones, MP3 players and cameras in addition to larger kit.

Sore need for the back, with Luke Shaw out 1 month?

Manchester United try to resolve Marcos Rojo stand-off

Manchester United are in discussions with Sporting Lisbon in an attempt to conclude Marcos Rojo's proposed move to Old Trafford.

Sporting have rejected United's £15.9million bid for the 24-year-old.

A complicated contractual situation may turn into a legal row, with Rojo's advisors threatening action.

But with the start of the Premier League season approaching, United are attempting to resolve the issue through negotiation.

Rojo, who played for Argentina in the World Cup final, is training on his own after Sporting suspended him.

His representatives, Doyen Sports, believe they are owed 75% of the fee from any rejected bid.

It has said it will take "all necessary measures to defend its rights".

The potential for a long legal case is not something that suits United, who will definitely be without Luke Shaw for Saturday's Premier League game with Swansea and also have an injury doubt over Jonny Evans.

New manager Louis van Gaal has been looking for a central defender following the summer departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
Van Gaal missed out on Thomas Vermaelen last week after the Belgian opted to join Barcelona from Arsenal.

Rojo played at left-back in six of Argentina's seven games during their World Cup campaign, including the final, when they lost 1-0 to Germany after extra-time.

He also scored in their 3-2 group game win against Nigeria in Porto Alegre.

Southampton have also expressed an interest in signing the defender.

Preview of opener tomorrow. Will Dutch colony win this? :p

Barclays Premier League
Venue: Old Trafford Date: Saturday, 16 August

TEAM NEWS
Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has a hamstring injury that could keep him out for a month.

Jonny Evans missed Tuesday's friendly win over Valencia and could join the likes of Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick on the sidelines for Louis van Gaal's first game in charge.

Swansea duo Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge return after missing last weekend's friendly against Villarreal.

But Leon Britton, Marvin Emnes and Jay Fulton are injured.

MATCH PREVIEW
Once again, Swansea are the opposition on a milestone Manchester United occasion. Two seasons back they came to Old Trafford for Sir Alex Ferguson's home farewell, while a year ago David Moyes got off to an emphatic winning start as United boss in South Wales.

Now for the dawn of the Louis van Gaal days.

LAWRO'S PREDICTION
Mark Lawrenson
Football analyst "United fans are obviously hoping that Louis van Gaal is the man who can shunt them back into the Champions League places and even help them challenge for the title.

People are getting a bit carried away there - I don't see either happening for them this season."

Pre-season results might not mean a great deal, but it's hard not to be impressed by what the Dutchman has got from his new charges so far - a 100% winning record against some of the cream of European football.

It's been achieved without a break for the man who led his country to third place at the World Cup, and by implementing the three-at-the-back system that the Netherlands played in Brazil.

I think it will suit United's defenders and wide men too, with Ashley Young already looking a different player to the one who never got going last season.

Newly-appointed captain Wayne Rooney is another who is sparkling under new management, and for once starts a new campaign without any speculation about his United future.

Some are predicting a struggle ahead for Swansea this time and they do look a little like a team in transition, with nine first-team squad members having left so far this summer and only four significant new signings coming in.

The business Garry Monk does between now and the end of the month will be important, with either hanging on to, or suitably replacing, Wilfried Bony a key factor. Bafetimbi Gomis from Lyon is a great acquisition for free, but he's not nearly the sort of prolific forward Bony is.

Swansea failed to win any of their 18 games against last season's top nine teams and even though they finally managed a first ever win at Old Trafford in the FA Cup in January, I can't see a repeat.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

•This is the reverse of last season's opening fixture when Manchester United won 4-1 at the Liberty Stadium - Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck both scoring twice.
•United also won the league clash at Old Trafford, but Swansea did win 2-1 in their FA Cup third-round tie in Manchester.
•The Red Devils have never lost a home league game against Swansea (W9, D2), who have yet to beat United in the Premier League (D1, L5).
Manchester United

•They finished outside the top six last season for the first time since 1989-90, when they were 13th.
•United lost seven home games last season, the most since the 1973-74 campaign.
•Their points total of 64 was their lowest since 1990-91.
•They have never lost a Premier League game at Old Trafford on the opening weekend (W8, D3).
•United didn't lose a single game from a winning position last season.
•Wayne Rooney scored three times in his four games as captain last season (W2, L2).
Swansea

•Swansea have lost seven of their last eight opening-day fixtures.
•The Swans were bottom of the table at the end of August last season.
•They won their last two away games of last season but ended with their worst-ever Premier League points tally (42) and finishing position (12th).
•Wilfried Bony scored two goals in three games against United last season.

Under par admission, caveat of needing to ease into top league?

Louis van Gaal admits Manchester United’s squad is below ‘top quality’
United manager wants players to prove themselves first

Exclusive interview: Ander Herrera talks to The Guardian,
Friday 15 August 2014 22.30 BST

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal speaks to the media before their game against Swansea City.

Louis van Gaal has expressed his first concerns about the state of Manchester United’s squad as he prepares for his opening Premier League match with a worsening injury pile-up and growing anxiety among the club’s support about their lack of transfer activity this summer.

Van Gaal revealed he had already warned the club’s owners, the Glazer family, and the chief executive, Ed Woodward, that the change of manager and implementation of a new 3-4-1-2 system might make it a difficult start to the season but, at that time, he had not factored in the possibility he might have only two fully fit senior defenders for his first game.

His assessment of their squad is that they need to bring in more high-quality players, admitting they are “a little below that level”, though he urged supporters not to panic despite a shortage of defenders meaning he is probably going to bring in two relatively unknown 20-year-olds, Tyler Blackett and Reece James, for their first top-level starts when Swansea visit Old Trafford on Saturday.

Woodward said recently that funds were in place for an extensive period of spending and to “watch this space” but United’s only additions so far came in June when Luke Shaw, now injured, and Ander Herrera joined the team that finished seventh last season, 22 points off the top. Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra all left, along with the second-choice left-back, Alexander Büttner, and that has left them desperately short of defenders now Jonny Evans has been added to their injury list.

Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia, Danny Welbeck and Robin van Persie are among their other absentees and Van Gaal, explaining why the club had not made more signings, said part of the issue was that he had wanted to give the current squad a fair chance before judging what needed to be done in the transfer market. “I wanted to assess my team. I can judge only when I am the coach and I transfer my philosophy and know how they perform. So that’s what I am doing. I think that is honest. We have to wait and see, because you can buy a player in 24 hours, believe me. That’s not a problem.”

United have been negotiating with Real Madrid about a possible deal for Ángel di María as well as trying to sign Sporting Lisbon’s left-back, Marcos Rojo. Van Gaal would not discuss the persistent links with Arturo Vidal of Juventus – “I’ll discuss it with Ed Woodward not with you” – and said he was relaxed about United’s position. “I am very confident. I am not nervous. Nine players injured and I am not nervous.”

That confidence, however, goes only so far when Van Gaal also says it will be some time before his team are able to challenge the top sides. “I cannot change everything [straight away]. I have to adapt to the culture. It’s a process and we have to make steps. Sometimes you fall and you have to make another big step. That’s the process but you are not champion in October. You are champion in May. I have another philosophy. I have another way of dealing with players to normal coaches. I’m not concerned where we might be [if we have a slow start] and I’ve said that in my meetings with Woodward and the Glazers.”

Van Gaal also revealed he had spoken to Wayne Rooney this week after Tuesday’s friendly against Valenciaout of concern the striker was being weighed down byhis new role as captain. “I said to him: ‘Maybe it was too much for you as captain ... let it fly, I say, let it fly!’ In the US [on pre-season] he scored a lot of goals and made a great amount of assists, so I wanted to say that. “Wayne was very proud to be captain. I asked him: ‘Were you already the captain?’ He said: ‘Yes, I was sometimes.’ But I said: ‘Now you are the official captain’ which is different. I think he wanted to show more than the utmost best to the public: that he is Wayne Rooney, the new captain. And I said to him: it’s more important how you perform, not the captaincy.”

NEW DEAL: Louis van Gaal may step up his efforts in signing Fredy Guarin after the club's intended move for Arturo Vidal stalled

Van Gaal is desperate to land the combative midfielder but chief executive Ed Woodward's efforts have yet to come to fruition because of Juventus' reluctance to sell the Chile international.

Reports claim that United have offered £40m plus Javier Hernandez and Nani to prise him away from the Old Lady as they look to add more summer signings in the next two weeks.

Van Gaal has completed deals for just two players since taking charge at Old Trafford, with Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera joining for a combined fee of £60m.

But with talks currently going nowhere for Vidal, van Gaal will reportedly look to Inter Milan's Guarin instead.

United will face competition for his signature from Juve, however.

New Old Lady boss Massimo Allegri is a fan of the Colombian, and according to reports is eager to sign the 28-year-old this summer.
