INCENSED that his lover had sold off a property they owned at a loss, Diong Tiong Ngo, 52, strangled her, slashed her with a chopper and then flung her off the corridor parapet. The 51-year-old Indonesian woman survived the three-storey fall but fractured her spine and leg. On Tuesday, Diong, a Malaysian who is a Singapore permanent resident, pleaded guilty in the High Court to attempted culpable homicide. He also admitted to slashing his lover's teenage son. He will be sentenced next Tuesday. Diong had initially been charged with attempted murder, for which he could have been jailed for life. This was reduced to a lesser charge as psychiatrists said he was suffering from a major depressive disorder at the time of the offence. Seated in the dock on Tuesday, Diong barely looked at his wife and 21-year-old son in the public gallery. He also has a 23-year-old daughter.

He faces up to 15 years' jail each for attempted culpable homicide and causing grievous hurt. Recounting the details of the case, Deputy Public Prosecutor Amarjit Singh said Diong's affair with the woman began in 2006. He was then managing his own coffee shop in Toa Payoh and had no problem supporting his lover, her daughter, 16, and son, 14, both students. He also rented a three-room flat in Ang Mo Kio for them. They cannot be named as the court has ordered that their identities not be revealed. The relationship soured a year later after Diong's coffee shop was repossessed by the Housing Board for redevelopment and he ran out of money.
