A man armed with a large knife injured at least 10 primary school children in southern China on Monday morning before killing himself, mainland media reported.

Six boys and four girls were reported to have suffered head injuries after the attack at

Yangfan Primary School in Haikou, Hainan province at about 11am. Two of the children were seriously injured, the China News Service reported.

According to witnesses, the pupils were lined up to be released from lunch when the man approached them outside the school gate.

A clinic owner said the students were aged about eight and all suffered head injuries.

Blood stains and abandoned belongings such as shoes could be seen lying on the ground outside the school.

Police sealed off the area around the school.

Although the 45-year-old suspect was named as Li Xijun, the report did not mention if anyone knew his motive.

Li was seen lying in a lane near the school, unconscious. It was believed that he killed himself after injuring the students.
