I can tell you if a future Non-PAP govt does come about, they are not going to tell her after reading case dossier. Tharman by protocol is number 3 in Govt and DPM. He too has no access to the dossier. He was himself interviewed for a week when this case surfaced, I am sure he too is keen to find out.

With respect to Scroobal, I do not think Teo Soh Lung was the most blur among the detainees. I would describe her as tenacious, deeply hurt and psychologically scarred by her detention, perhaps even for the rest of her life. Until she gets her closure, she has every right to seek justice and regain some measure of self respect; if not from this present-day PAP government, then perhaps from a future non-PAP government. You see, hope like faith can be eternal. It is enbalming for the soul and keeps her spirit going.

Sounds like there's been a lot of horsetrading among the detained and the auths and those who agreed to rat on the others or prepared to read from the ISD script to frame others got to go scot free whereas those who wanted to remain honourable and refused to cooperate got the short end of the stick. So the bad guys walked free into PPS jobs, pension schemes and cloistered govt positions at the expense of the good guys who stayed in for the long haul.

I thot I only see these on 24 and Rendition and movies like that, you become state witnessto put others in jail on trumped up charges, and you go free to a new life, new id, somewhere in the bahamas...

Not a question of framing up. You reveal the role that you played but don't tell your fellow detainees the role that you played. Then every few years you gather on the anniversary of your detention in some chinese restaurant with other detainess but you still don't tell them how deep you were involved and what you told the authorities. Then blurfucks like Teo Soh Lung walking around wondering why she was detained.

When the Govt first went after them it was for an entirely purpose. They got fed up with the Catholic Church first for fiddling with Jurong workers and then maids and the Geylang Centre. They had been warned so many times and on previous occasions on such things as the Bukit Ho Swee and Nazareth Centre. The Nun who gave a Minister grief was sent back to the convent. It did not end there. Then other parties and hidden hands surfaced. Tan Wah Piow was a convenient cover story.

When the saga finally came to an end it led to the discovery of two separate and unrelated plots. The first was the unraveling of the US second attempt to play local politics. Their first attempt involved the Govt of Lim Yew Hock and its discovery led to PAP gaining its first victory and ascendancy to power in 1959. That crucial information came from the Marxist Conspiracy Saga. The source of that information only came to light to the entire ISD when PM held a thank you gathering at the Istana for the Service a few later.

The second discovery was the re-emergence of an old dead letter drop and the interesting parties behind it.

Well to all the contributors to this thread from Scroo to Kingrant to the rest ....

In my opinion, the 1987 Op Spectrum is the last time LKY can impose his will on the then 2nd generation leaders.

By sheer force of experience, charisma & paranoi, in the final analysis, I can imagine LKY throwing down the gauntlet: Limpei who rode the tiger & outsmart the British, the Plen, the Ultras, the turncoats etc, if I say that shadowy apparition is a demon, you guys better trust me. I KNOW.

Scroo, my friend is a contemporary of Tan Wah Piow but in SP Student's Union. These idealistic souls are born in the wrong time wrong era - when the domino theory was in vogue, indochina in flames threatening to burn into SEA, it was a time LKY consoled hisself that he will take no chances - and thereafter all the broken lives & unjust detentions .... from Nanyang Editor detentions, disbarment of David Marshall, closure of Nantah etc etc that was the 70s when Cold War & subterfuge was the order of the day.

In the 80s, LKY is in his feel-wise prime, preparing for handing over, threatening to put JBJ in his place & using his formidable intimidation such that Chiam under fire, melted and uttered his classic 'If the PM say so, then it must be so' when LKY came to the defence of that wily Mandarin Teh Chean Wan.

So 1987, DPM Goh, 2DPM Tony & the rest are coming to the tail end of their apprenticeship.

No doubt they had feathers in their cap by then, having successfully or on the way to overturning the 1985/86 first ever recession. I remember GCT in NUS Ministerial talk musing aloud under questioning: if the CPF cuts etc don't work, then how ... he was suddenly despondent then recovered to say words to the effect, then worst must happen before we can recover.

You appear definitive that Tan Wah Piow was a bogeyman to this day. I think it is plausible.

LKY is an intensely loyal tribal chief - so men like James Fu and some of his Kek clan supporters, LKY never forget to reward those who have done him good turns before.

Unless of course, loyalty is subsumed by threats to his credibility : that's how he can turn his back on Devan Nair, another 'turnaround' chap who unlike the other 3 released prior to LKY taking up the 1959 spoils of Prime Ministership, actually stick to the PAP-LKY cause. Man, this Devan sing superlatives of LKY in 1973 when he was chair of his Sep Birthday celebration.

In Devan's post-Presidency self exile, he was full of bile for LKY betraying the democratic socialism the core group espouse ( including the ideals of multi-racialism etc Raja's creed etc). LKY has just become totally self-righteous & Messiahnic by then, indulging in his social engineering & jump-up-from-grave machismo.

Ironically, Jenadas Nair, Singapore's 3rd President Devan's son has moved from Sunday Times columnist to IPS & now seen on TV part of panel interviewing the 4 Tans.

Life is full of ironies.

Singapore is an irony.

So, in a clash of wills & the contestation for power, how far can a political leader go in walking his talk depends on his moral courage - which when run out, will resort to 'ends justify means' logic to justify any extra-judicial or draconian anti-human rights courses of action.

Low Thia Kiang, an innate politician, have the smarts akin to the Lim Chin Siong generation.
Over the years, he has conducted himself in a way I thought Chin Siong & the middle school gang would have conducted themselves : fighting LKY's dimming charisma with vigour & charisma of their own & political shrewd and measured.

This camp or school of modus operandi is diametrically contrasted with the Western educated bleeding heart liberals like Dr Chee Soon Juan, RI principal Wijesingha's son that Dr Wijesingha, Kenneth Jeyaratnam & even to a certain extent, Tan Jee Say.

You can tell from their oratory style, their lines of thought in their political arguments etc.

I chuckled when TJS in rebutting TT and overriding moderator Saswa, blurted that 'I have been criticised on the net for my English.... so which part of terrorism, who is a terrorist blah blah ...'

ha ha was it kingrant who said for a British educated scholar, his England is below par...

Still, history awaits us in athe wee hours of 28th Sunday.

We shall all know the makeup of the new SIngaporean electorate - that would be market reality as opposed to all these cute postulations & personal theories we all put up .... mine included.

Agree on couple of things. On other things, here are couple of comments. Large scale detention is no longer the vogue, too costly PR wise when you want FTs to come in and the kids of the establishment want to go west for Studies. The MO is individual call up and interviews. Every now and then they detain a chap for two years. Longer detention is no longer the vogue. Release with restrictions. Too many matryrs wannabes. The exception is Muslim Fundamentalists.

Not a question of framing up. .....
The second discovery was the re-emergence of an old dead letter drop and the interesting parties behind it.

CIA paying Education Minister Chew in the 50s led to Lim Yew Hock Govt's demise & PAP ascent. Who played a part in this discovery ? Dr Arthur Lim and Francis Thomas(I think, father of that CNA journalist or AWARE member), Labour Party's conscientious souls, then turned the evidence into the hands of GKS & LKY much to their glee.

Francis Seow, a suave fair-weather, woman-loving lawyer can wax lyrical on just about anything under the sun was deemed the liberal, democratic alternative worth cultivating..... happened during the REagan Administration (2nd term) when the Singapore US Embassy are stocked with these US-Democracy advocates & evangelists....

So Francis went into Whitley, came out, bitched about it in his book To catch a Tartar but also, in a sense, he treated that episode as his matrydom moment...

Today, in self-exile under the Harvard brand name, in the good old US of A, he retains his utter contempt for LKY. Of course the other US-exile Gopalan is another different character altogether.

ISD

ISD has its place & reason for existence.

Whether it can be abused, misused, well the CIA (fiction & fact) is proof that moral leadership determines the integrity of the organization.

But their favourite all time thing is to dig into your skeletons :
for tax indiscretions, sexual daliances, education records .... anything that will discredit the political opponent.

So then the bicycle thief anecdote etc. But PAP MPs & candidates are also no squeaky clean virgins....

In any case, the current WP Aljunied Team has seemingly been unblemished... can't pick on them.
Even Chen SM.

All Old Man can muster is a sarcastic 'his long absence... why now ... lose sure return to Beijing' that's all the m&d he can fling at them.....

Ultimately, in the words of FDR: There is nothing to fear but fear itself.....

Political courage is not political machismo.

Dear Scroo

Between the denials from Operation Spectrum and Operation Cold Store, I was always more sympathetic to the people caught up in Spectrum. I for one could not believe in the charged atmosphere of the sixties that the "socialists" did not know which side of the line they were on and who pulled their strings. But then again I am a paranoid bastard by nature and a geek who studied intelligence history and conspiracy.

The tenure of FS at harvard spoke volumes about some form of deal between USG and him. I am surprised that the link to the USG came through the marxists conspirators, the first hint in the literature was when FS defended them.

How many other plots could that bunch of do gooders gather amongst themselves ? Two separate and un related schemers must be an achievement by any measure and the stuff of spy fiction.

Just a guess but the Malaysians were behind the dead letter drop ?

At least you could figure it out. Its matter of deduction - our biggest threat has to come from our known enemies. History shows that blurfucks and bleeding hearts are used for various purposes. That is why the source of funding for various civic, social agitation, NGOs are carefully monitored by intelligence agencies as 101 activity. The Malaysians have been caught funding one PAP MP and one opposition candidate. Nathan was withdrawn as High Commissioner of Malaysia and sent to Washington as Ambassador when the Malaysian found out he was activating his network and sought his exit. The game goes on.

Tan Wah Piow has turned out to a boon for the Intelligence folks here. Not only as a useful bogeyman but as a honeypot for every wannabe dissident. They all head to London and then get watched or called for interview when they return. I am sure Tharman has realised that by now.

I remember a story years ago involving a big family run business. One of clerks was making withdrawals by forging the signature of one of owners of the firm. The rest of the owners who are all brothers and the matriach wrongly assumed that signature belong to one of the brothers and decided to have a family inquisition at the matriarch's home. The brother who was supposed to have made those withdrawals was asked if he was having problems without they mentioning the withdrawals from the family account. The brother thought they found about his affair with another brother's wife and came clean and even revealed that one of the nephews was actually his son. Imagine the surprise and shock.

Interrogation in the Intelligence services is very similar. You ask what you do not know and never show what you know.

The old man stopped using the ISA as his weapon of choice long time ago. The last time they used the OSA, it blew in their face as per Tharman/Patrick Daniel affair and led to the dismissal of Perm Sec.

Old man's weapon of choice for the last 25 years has been the open court system and the tax department. Sue every potential political adversary until bankrupt, Sue every publication that has a comment about nepotism, his son, his daughter in law etc. Note how he used the tax department on FS and Tang. Clear abuse. Use PA to cripple every fledgling and budding political party. Use NEA for stupid summons. Use the state controlled press to deliver propaganda to your doorstep.

Actually it was a toss up between the CCCP , MCP and the Malaysians. The network that was exposed was built around supposed " Marxists" to begin with. The MCP might have been involved but in 88 according to Chin Peng, they were ahem initiating secret contacts with the Malaysian Gov and being told by the CCCP to cut a deal. Couldn't be them as they had every incentive to stay low and not plot. Could have been the CCCP , but what the heck were they doing inciting political instability, military espionage, perhaps and something LKY could understand but this was a different kettle of fish and totally unlike the CCCP. The last choice was the Malaysians since they had the network into the MCP and all the communist cells through agents infiltrators and heck it was something they would have done

She got to be in denial after so many clues.

Take Ho Kwong Ping. He was part of the era, having taken part in student protest against the Vietnam war. He was convicted of possession military secrets and subsequently detained after being implicated by his colleague. The penny finally dropped while he was sitting in Whitley and realised that he was a pawn in someone else's game.

Being a bleeding heart is in the DNA of many of us. We believe in equity and fairness to the common man. Being used by a foreign govt is a whole different game.

Tan Wah Piow is no communist. He was an idealistic architectural student who was in similar mindset of many students of that era who wanted worker abuse to be exposed. He was fixed up. Old man however never took any chances. Jurong Industrial estate was humming along and he did not want to damage it. To him collateral damage was perfectly acceptable. He never bothered about the lives of others.

Tan Wah Piow refused to sell his soul and they created a special legislation to remove his citizenship.

Wah Piow and Juliet Chin even when the latter made it all the way to China to join Chin Peng at their clandestine broadcasting site , they were driven into it but not the level that I would classify as in that slot. Even Chin Penh mentioned that.

But the 2 doctors certainly dye in the wool lot. I give credit to Poh to acknowledge it when he came back from Canada and gave an interview.
