In 2004, Low TK question the sufficiency of hospital bed ...now hospitals overcrowded

Responding to queries from Hougang MP Low Thia Khiang, Mr Khaw said this is a local, and not a national problem - and Singapore is not short of hospital beds.

But he (Khaw) explained the solution is not as easy as merely opening up more bedste

- Parliament 2004
,In 2004, the hospital building plan was presented for right up to 2012, Low asked if the plan was adequateif adjusted for ppopulation growth as the hospital beds per thousand would decline even as the new capacity would be added slower than the growth in population.

Today we see hospitals coping with the overcrowdedness by setting up tents and having the patients treated in tents. Was the population growth so unexpected that the govt was unable to plan to meet the capacity.

Singapore hospital beds has been way below average of developed countries due to underinvestment by the govt. Adjusted for population growth the situation will be no better in 2020 based on the current hospital build plan. Not only that, the needs will rise as the population age and more will need hospital care. The analogy is our transport woes, as they try to solve the problem by increasing road capacity and public transport capacity, the problem is growing at the same time at a faster rate than they can expand capacity. 2013 saw another year of population growth through import of people.

This problem is a growing one and surfaced 10 years ago when Low brought it up in parliament and since that time got steadily worse in subsequent years.

Data from statistics year book.

The number admissions went up and hospital beds went down.

One of my friends working in Ministry of Finance revealed to me that the building of the 2 casinos took up so much resources of the construction sector and the cost to escalate that the govt delayed its plans to build hospitals in Yishun and Jurong East That such a trade off was made to bring casino gambling to Singapore instead of caring for the sick is indeed shocking to me.

It proved that PAP did not listen to oppositions and other ordinary citizens.
Anyone questioned on their plans and policies was trashed by all PAP MPs.
We should get more opposition MPs, say at least >1/3 and do not give PAP a 2/3 majority.

In fact, PAP has:

1. no foresight
2. no insight
3. only can explain things away from hindsight e.g. once in 50 years event or isolated event

We will never be able to get confirmation that such a trade-off was done but such policies are entirely consistent with their belief system. Whatever brings in money goes first, the rest will follow , if at all.

there's a major flu outbreak, and it may grow to a pandemic. all public hospitals have been alerted to set up isolation tents away from wards where patients are already warded for other treatments. it's a contingency plan in action, and the truth will not be out until the shit hits the fan. public funded hospitals in my area are already setting up isolation tents, even in the middle of winter. or actually more so due to flu outbreaks getting more intense in colder months. private hospitals are exempt. we already have deaths, and the number is growing. just doubled last night. not kidding.

sg public hospitals are heeding the call and doing the right thing. the cdc and who do not want to cause undue panic and refrain from posting this alert publicly in plain language. the message is disguised as "not having sufficient beds."

You are being an idiot for even suggesting this. How would 1 opposition mp impact policies when PAP has the super-majority?

CSJ has been doing that for years, did it slow the policies down?

What is needed at the moment is for opposition to garner at least 35% to stop the super-majority. Then use the interim time till 2020 election to form a shadow government to groom appropriate leaders to take the 51%.
