To be fair, there are some government officials who got in through the bidding, but by and large, those who are holding key Minister portfolios are worth their salt. Those who couldn't make it have graciously stepped aside and accepted their lot in life.

Sounds serious, Ah Heng may need to retire and a by-election to replace him.

With effect from last night, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam will cover the duties of the Minister for Finance.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said Mr Heng, 54, collapsed at 5.34pm. Three Cabinet members who are also medical doctors rushed to his aid, managing to resuscitate the stricken minister before the ambulance arrived.

He was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) where a CT scan showed he had suffered a stroke.

Just before 10pm, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said on Facebook that Mr Heng had just undergone surgery and doctors were “doing their best to deal with his problem”.

More than an hour later, the PMO said Mr Heng had suffered a sudden stroke due to an aneurysm, which is a localised weakening of a blood vessel.

“He underwent initial neurosurgery to relieve pressure in his brain due to the bleeding. The aneurysm was successfully closed,” PMO said in a statement issued at about 11.30pm. Mr Heng would remain under close monitoring at TTSH’s intensive care unit, it added.

Seriously, this episode reveals a lot about the health monitoring process of our Ministers. I wonder whether Heng Swee Keat 's health issue has been raised or even noted as a concern by the Medical Review Board in his yearly medical check-up. Or is there even a yearly medical check-up required for all key governmental officials ? I do not mean to take pot-shots at this situation, but I think it is important that Ministers especially those who are designated for higher office should be certified with a clean bill of health or if not, they should be urged to go on compulsory health fitness programmes to keep their health in check and to undergo regular medical reviews. This is to ensure that our Ministers are healthy and strong to handle the demands of the job and insure the continuity of service and effectual succession transition of the Cabinet.

You're being really ridiculous tell me who goes for an annual CT scan from tip to toe? And you'd need to throw in an MRI to for good measure too.

Invariably the scans would show up abnormalities and experts would then have to make judgement calls regarding which anomalies would need exploratory surgery and which should be left alone.

Life for ministers would end up being one continuous medical procedure after another.

I don't mean that all of them have to go for CT scan or MRI to detect abnormalities, but certainly the doctor could tell if the patient is at risk by the standard health screen procedures such as blood test, urine test, stool test, blood pressure, cardio test, etc.

What is that to the Ministers to do once a year health screen check ?

Health Risk factors

Many factors can increase your risk of a stroke. Some factors can also increase your chances of having a heart attack. Potentially treatable stroke risk factors include:

Lifestyle risk factors

Being overweight or obese
Physical inactivity
Heavy or binge drinking
Use of illicit drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamines
Medical risk factors

High blood pressure — the risk of stroke begins to increase at blood pressure readings higher than 120/80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Your doctor will help you decide on a target blood pressure based on your age, whether you have diabetes and other factors.
Cigarette smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke.
High cholesterol.
Diabetes.
Obstructive sleep apnea — a sleep disorder in which the oxygen level intermittently drops during the night.
Cardiovascular disease, including heart failure, heart defects, heart infection or abnormal heart rhythm.

I'm not a PAP supporter and didn't agree with his comments on PT. Despite all, I do not wish this on anyone especially him. Speedy recovery HSK!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Nevertheless many would have though it could not be diet or fitness. It turned out to aneurysm or weakened blood vessel in the brain. No amount of routine medical test and even a strict regime or fitness and diet is going to help. These are usually defects that gets worse overtime. If the person is breathing properly and you suspect a stroke, get in the car and drive straight to Tan Tock Seng and no other hospital. If it is peak period an ambulance might be the best choice. Speed is absolutely key.

If at night with little traffic and you are a good driver floor the accelerator. If the Police stop you, they will immediately turn on the siren and provide a speedy escort to A&E if they know its an emergency.

I have no idea why the government and the mainstream media are saying that HSK had a stroke?

What HSK appears to have had is a cerebral haemorrhage due to a ruptured aneurysm, which is a weakened balloning region in a blood vessel in the brain. This is not a stroke!

A stroke on the otherhand is caused by either a blocked cerebral artery or a ruptured cerebral artery due to prior vessel damage, not an aneurysm which carries a different prognosis.

HSK's outlook now all depends on WHERE the aneurysm burst, deep or on the outside of the brain? If deep, then naturally not good as the blood gushes out and tears the brain as it finds its way out. Hopefully it is on the outside.

The next 2 days shall tell us more.

I wish HSK well.

Welcome back bro, albeit under these circumstances. Stroke due to blocked artery is the most common form and cover over 80% of strokes cases. Aneurysm is the other cause of stroke. I know that people tend to use the term aneurysm rather than stroke in the old days presumably to be more specific and to show that it is different from usual and common blocked artery version when it is the latter. Or am I way off-field.

The medical fraternity classifies this as a stroke so who are we to argue otherwise?

http://www.cdc.gov/stroke/types_of_stroke.htm

he main types of stroke are

  • Ischemic stroke.
  • Hemorrhagic stroke.
  • Transient ischemic attack (a warning or “mini-stroke”).
Ischemic Stroke

Most strokes (85%) are ischemic strokes.1 If you have an ischemic stroke, the artery that supplies oxygen-rich blood to the brain becomes blocked.
Blood clots often cause the blockages that lead to ischemic strokes. Read more about factors that increase risk for ischemic stroke.

Hemorrhagic Stroke

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when an artery in the brain leaks blood or ruptures (breaks open). The leaked blood puts too much pressure on brain cells, which damages them.

High blood pressure and aneurysms—balloon-like bulges in an artery that can stretch and burst—are examples of conditions that can cause a hemorrhagic stroke.

There are two types of hemorrhagic strokes:

  • Intracerebral hemorrhage is the most common type of hemorrhagic stroke. It occurs when an artery in the brain bursts, flooding the surrounding tissue with blood.
  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage is a less common type of hemorrhagic stroke. It refers to bleeding in the area between the brain and the thin tissues that cover it.
Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is sometimes called a "mini-stroke." It is different from the major types of stroke because blood flow to the brain is blocked for only a short time—usually no more than 5 minutes.2
It is important to know that

  • A TIA is a warning sign of a future stroke.
  • A TIA is a medical emergency, just like a major stroke.
  • Strokes and TIAs require emergency care. Call 9-1-1 right away if you feel signs of a stroke or see symptoms in someone around you.
  • There is no way to know in the beginning whether symptoms are from a TIA or from a major type of stroke.
  • Like ischemic strokes, blood clots often cause TIAs.
  • More than a third of people who have a TIA end up having a major stroke within 1 year if they don’t receive treatment, and 10%-15% will have a major stroke within 3 months of a TIA.2
Recognizing and treating TIAs can reduce the risk of a major stroke. If you have a TIA, your health care team can find the cause and take steps to prevent a major stroke.

The tests you mention would not reveal a potential brain aneurysm. I should know because I've had friends struck down by strokes who had absolutely no risk factors whatsoever.

I've also known individuals with uncontrolled hypertension who lived to a ripe old age with no major health issues .

At the end of the day it all depends upon how the cards fall.
