Tan Chuan-Jin says some cardboard collectors do it for extra pocket money and some for fun. Yes, some do tell you exactly that, but that's because it's the most dignified response they can muster. Try scraping rubbish bins and dragging cardboards for hours under the hot sun for just 11 cents per kilo (it was 12 cents when I filmed Nation Builders in 2008). It's backbreaking work, let alone for 80-year-olds. Credit to Chuan-Jin for his effort (Hsien Loong won't do this), but really, he can do much better than draw conclusions from a day of sightseeing in the alleys and backlanes of a country and a people from whom he draws his salary and power.
