France is to ban Islamic garments known as abayas in schools from September, the government announced Sunday, with a top official calling them a “political attack” and an attempt to convert people to Islam.

In an interview on French TV channel TF1, education minister Gabriel Attal said the ban aligned with “laicité,” France’s hard-line version of secularism, which prohibits outward signs of religion in schools.

Critics argue the broad policy has been weaponized to target French Muslims…..

…. “You enter a classroom, you must not be able to identify the religion of the students by looking at them,” he said.

Government spokesman Olivier Veran said Monday that the abaya was “obviously” religious and “a political attack, a political sign,” and that he deemed the wearing of it to be an act of “proselytizing.”

Attal said he would give “clear rules at the national level” to school heads ahead of the return to classes nationwide from September 4.

The move comes after months of debate over the wearing of abayas in French schools, where women and girls have long been barred from wearing the Islamic headscarf or face coverings.

A March 2004 law banned “the wearing of signs or outfits by which students ostensibly show a religious affiliation”…….

I saw malays wearing abayas on friday, they look strange in the attire.
Even men wear abaya. It's a traditional costume.

Male national costume: jalabiya, scarf and skullcap

Sudanese man in traditional clothes

And here, the PAP regime allows full burqa ninjas to walk around unmolested. I have seen them at Sentosa's beach on a hot afternoon, the husband and their brood frolicking at the seaside while burqa ninja was tempting heatstroke at one corner, watching them. Very empowering is it not, AWARE feminazis?

It's just a fashion. Like Chinese wearing qi pao.

wearing burqa is very different from wearing qi pao. I have seen BLM wearing qi pao, look odd but at least face not covered up. Islam is not just a simple religion, it is a system of control.

Up in smoke goes the facade and hypocrisy of liberte, egalite and fratenite.
It's no facade. France has very strong secularism. They first revolted against the church. It's consistent with their national identity.

With religion there is no liberte, no egalite.

Not giving people a choice of their religion, there is no liberte.
And if you really want egalite, you'd be a communist.

There is choice of religion. Just not in any state-sponsored institution. Schools, offices anything even remotely related to government. What you do in your own house, your friends and your spare time and even your own workplace is entirely up to you. Jump around naked for all they care. But not in anything to do with government involvement.

They have had a very bad experience with Christianity which is why anti-religiousness is enshrined in their state constitution. Islam was not even in the picture when this separation of religion and state was brought about. And it was enforced strictly then too. No such thing as crosses anywhere near any government institutions. Doesn't mean they don't have famous churches or even big mosques. They have both. They just want to keep it out of government. It is a very wise choice if you ask me.

Egalite is not communism. Egalite is treating the other person like a person just like you. No special treatment. This does not mean being given exactly equal handouts from government. It is everyone has a voice and everyone deserves to be heard. Communism is that everyone gets the same no matter what they do. Egalite is you can do whatever you want to do. Not the same at all.

Goodness, you really have no idea about French principles do you? Not trying to insult you, but your assertions are very wide off the mark of what the French are about.

From definition:
Definitions of egalite. social and political equality. synonyms: egality. type of: equality, equation, equivalence, par. a state of being essentially equal or equivalent; equally balanced.

You can dice it anyway way you want, but communism is part of it.

The irony is, every country that is run by a communist party isn't communist anymore, except for NKorea.

oh my. please don't be another superpower and claim stuff because it was written in a dictionary or he could dream it up. Communism is not part of it. Otherwise, France would be a communist country. which it verifiably is not.

Then answer this question, is China really practicing communism?
