Remember the days when we have to squeeze think ink from bottle to fill the fountain pens? Remember when your white school uniform is totally tainted by leaking fountain pens? Those were the days when fountain pens is popular, and there were few ballpoint and no rollerball pens?

Those were the days.

Well this is the 21 century. I recommend these fountain pens.

It was founded in Geneva in 1924 when Arnold Schweitzer purchased the Ecridor Pencil Factory. Schweitzer named his new company after Caran d'Ache, the nickname of a French satiric political cartoonist from Russia.

La Rindyà Fountain Pen (Limited Edition)

In recognition of its history and origins, Caran d'Ache has paid tribute to Switzerland with an exceptional collection of writing instruments. This addition to this richly symbolic collection celebrates one of the oldest and most picturesque customs in Switzerland's long heritage: the annual descent from the mountains to the plain. In the Fribourg dialect this event is called "La Rindyà" and the new pen takes this name. It is produced in a limited series of 1291 pieces, a reference to the founding date of the Swiss Confederation.

Every year, the arrival of autumn signals one of Switzerland's most beautiful pastoral traditions. A highly coloured procession of cattle, richly decorated with flowers and greenery, wends its way slowly down the mountain to the foothills where they will spend the winter. Their clanging bells fill the valley with the joy of this picturesque occasion. In the Canton of Fribourg, and particularly in the Gruyère region, this custom that dates back to the Middle Ages has kept the name of "La Rindyà".

The writing block of the fountain pen and the roller pen is decorated with a fine engraving of the Moléson. Overlooking the Alpine foothills in the Canton of Fribourg, its 2002 m. summit offers a breathtaking view of the entire Swiss Romande. The pen body is engraved with La Rindyà and the black lacquer is applied by hand.

The Limited Edition is presented in its own special box: A chest of solid Swiss beech wood. The Limited Edition frieze is carved on the lid and its design is inspired by a picturesque detail: the stacks of wood planks seen at the entrance to mountain farms.

Caran d’Ache, founded in 1924 by Arnold Schweitzer, was a product of Switzerland’s long history of watchmaking and jewellery manufacture. Today, it is the epitome of superior quality and recognized expertise. Each product is created by hand in the Geneva workshops and brings together the traditional expertise of master craftsmen and the performance of computer-assisted machine tools.

Ecridor Chevron Fountain Pen

The Ecridor Chevron fountain pen by Caran d’Ache has a popular reversed v-shape design. The Ecridor Collection, with its hexagonal shape, elegant decoration, luxury materials and “Swiss made” quality, remains a favourite to many.

The pens are offered in rhodium-coated silver plated or gilded exteriors. All current Ecridor models are silver plated with a rhodium coating to prevent tarnishing. The decoration is diamond-engraved. On the side opposite the clip, a 12mm space is kept free for a personal engraving.

The fountain-pen nib is available in several nib widths. The pen fills via cartridge or converter.

Kufi Art Gold Fountain Pen (Limited Edition)

As the birthplace of the first form of writing, the Arab civilization has done more than any other to develop the refined art of calligraphy. The supreme example is Kufi, the oldest oriental writing, with its keen sense of geometry and its perfect proportions. Over several centuries, Kufi calligraphy spread all over the Oriental world, decorating sacred books, the facades of mosques and the earliest pieces of money. In a few rare areas, its heritage has been carefully preserved to this day.

The Kufi Art Limited Edition fountain pen by Caran d'Ache is a truly exceptional creation that combines the talents of the Malaysian artist, Shukor Yahya, and the craftsmen of the Geneva company. It draws its inspiration from the symbolism of Islam and from Oriental mysticism, capturing their very essence and celebrating the pleasure of handwriting and the art of calligraphy.

This is most evident in the work of the artist which, together with his signature, is exquisitely reproduced and engraved in the noble ebony of the body. Each carefully written word is hand-coated in a lacquer whose rich golden reflections echo the colouring of Byzantine art:

"Art is the ultimate expression of the human soul.
It tells of tales long past and dreams yet to be realized.
It breathes joy and love, and tears, sadness and tragedy.
Above all else, it inspires".

Offering a counterpoint to the geometrical decoration of the body, the gold-plating of the metal elements add a sparkling brilliance with a contemporary simplicity. Its bold hexagonal body with its smooth feel, the alliance of aesthetics and writing comfort, and its superbly crafted finish, bring modernity and elegance to the Kufi Art writing instruments.
Each version comprises a line with 101 fountain pens. The fountain pen can be used with a piston ink pump or with cartridges, and its 18-carat gold nib is available in six widths, allowing for maximum personalization of writing style.

The wonderful precision of the Kufi Art is a magnificent demonstration of Caran d’Ache expertise. Each version is produced in a limited edition of 101 pieces, a number that reflects the binary logic at the heart of the construction and complex symbolism of Kufi calligraphy.

Varius Chinese Ivory Lacquer GT Fountain Pen

The Varius Ivory Chinese Lacquer pen: the material inherits its elegance from a thousand-year-old tradition.
The Geneva company is one of the very few Western manufacturers to master this ancient technique. Chinese lacquer is a natural product, derived from the resin of the "Rhus Vernicifera", that creates delicate reflections and incredibly deep colours.
Chinese Lacquer is applied by hand in a succession of layers then polished many times in an exclusive process that combines traditional Chinese methods and modern technology. The mystery surrounding the colour of Chinese lacquer is even greater. With a large amount of chemistry and full control of the reaction of the living material, the result can exceed all expectations. The ivory colour inspired by the subtly off-white shade of elephant tusks is a symbol of wisdom and intelligence in oriental culture, underlining the universal appeal of Varius. It also evokes the thousandyear-old Oriental tradition of sculpted figures with the delicate shade of Chinese porcelain. With this colour, the Varius Ivory Chinese Lacquer celebrates a marriage of classic simplicity and great beauty. In the gold-plated version, the reflections of the precious metal unite with the Chinese Lacquer, creating a quietly chic combination.

The cap of this Varius edition is enlivened by a succession of fine straight lines in an original guillochage. The Chinese seal engraved into the lacquer confirms that it is truly Chinese Lacquer, underlining the expertise of Caran d'Ache.

The fountain-pen nib, made of 18 ct gold, is available in several nib widths. The pen fills via cartridge or converter. The pen has an ergonomic metal writing grip.

Varius Ivanhoe Fountain Pen

Named for the hero of Sir Walter Scott's stirring novel, the Varius Ivanhoe fountain pen by Caran d'Ache is redolent of the Middle Ages with its chivalry and minstrel songs. Like the knights of old, the pens of the Ivanhoe Collection are clad in shining armour. The round middle part of the silverplated or gilded brass body is jacketed in a "coat of mail" of woven stainless steel. Two rhodium-coated or gilded double bands mark the upper and lower ends of the jacket.

The typical Caran d'Ache retro steel clip – also silverplated and rhodium-coated or gilded – goes perfectly with the pens' medieval outfit. But beneath this nostalgic exterior beats a heart of modern precision engineering, designed for maximum reliability and writing comfort.

The fountain-pen nib, made of 18 ct gold (rhodium-coated in the silver edition), is available in several nib widths. The pen fills via cartridge or converter. The pen has an ergonomic metal writing grip.

Year of the Dragon Fountain Pen (Limited Edition)

The Year of the Dragon Limited Edition fountain pen by Caran d'Ache is the sign of success for the year 2012.

According to legend, at one Chinese New year the Jade Emperor summoned all the animals in creation to his palace. Only 12 of them responded to the invitation and as a reward the Emperor gave each of them a year of the Zodiac. The only mythical creature included in the Chinese Zodiac was the Dragon which had several roles, including messenger of the Gods, master of the elements and guide to human beings.

The Chinese lacquering is a masterpiece of craftsmanship: the body of the pen is given several coats, first red then black. The result is a truly dramatic contrast as the fire-red dragon seems to explode out of an infinity of intense black.

The Maison de Haute Ecriture has joined with the contemporary Chinese artist, Li Qiang Sheng to create the image of the dragon and add his signature. "Year of the Dragon" has been produced in a total of 888 individually numbered pieces since 8 is considered a lucky number in China.

The fountain-pen nib, made of 18 ct gold, is available in several nib widths. The pen fills via cartridge or converter. The pen has an ergonomic metal writing grip.

The tip of the cap is particularly special. It is set with one or more diamonds, depending on the instrument (three diamonds on the fountain pen, two on the roller pen and one on the ballpoint). It also boasts an Akoya pearl.

The fountain pen has a piston pump in platinum-coated silver plate, decorated with guillochage and set with a 2mm diamond. The pen can also be used with Caran d’Ache cartridges. Amerigo Vespucci Bronze Fountain Pen (Limited Edition)

The year 2012 marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Amerigo Vespucci; in creating a pen to commemorate this crucial 500th anniversary, Visconti took its inspiration from a few important symbolic events, primarily Vespucci's travels themselves and Waldseemüller's famous map of 1507. It would have been impossible to reproduce the entire map on a pen, so Visconti chose the sections depicting Europe and America. To reproduce it correctly, Visconti further perfected the scrimshaw technique, introducing points and chiaroscuro into the graphic work. The result is astonishing − indeed almost as astonishing as Vespucci's own travels! Certain details, such as the caravelle, are almost painterly in the quality of their engraving. If one stops to consider that a scrimshaw is not on the surface but actually inside the surface, one will realize what an incredible accomplishment this has been on Visconti’s artists' part. Such a special item could not fail to have a special presentation box, so Visconti reproduced the instrument which, in conjunction with the quadrant, allowed Vespucci to complete his voyage: the astrolabe.

Historical background
2012 marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Amerigo Vespucci, the Florentine navigator who first recognized the fourth continent for what it was - in other words, who realized that he wasn't in Asia! A remark of this kind may bring a smile to our lips today, but in 1497 the letter the navigator addressed to Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici caused such a stir that when Martin Waldseemüller drew the first map of America 10 years later, he called the continent after the feminized Latin version of Amerigo's name: Americus Vespucius. Vespucci travelled to the "New World" on fully four separate occasions, reaching latitude 16°52'S, discovering Rio de Janeiro and Maracaibo and giving Venezuela, or "Little Venice", its name. King Ferdinand II of Aragon appointed Amerigo "Piloto Mayor de Castilla" in 1508, placing him in charge of organizing new expeditions and of training sailors in the use of the quadrant and the astrolabe.

The limited edition of 500 fountain pens in bronze and 50 pens in 750 rose gold has Visconti’s famous 23 kt Palladium Dreamtouch nib and uses the Power Filling system.

Metropolis Gordian Knot Gun Metal Fountain Pen (Limited Edition)

Like its counterpart, the Wall Street pens, the Visconti Metropolis takes its inspiration from the soaring skyscrapers and bustling pace of the city. The pens have a modernist design with clean lines and a bold shape that gives you both urban chic and practical, comfortable writing.

Like the city, the Metropolis relies on its infra-structure to make the mechanics of the pen run smoothly with its retractable point on the fountain pen and rollerball. To create the safety pen, a vintage term used to define a retractable mechanism, Visconti crafted a perfect mechanical part and piston filler. Produced with watchmaker precision, the push-and-turn filling mechanism has over 30 components that operate with dependability and ease. A safety cap makes it impossible to close the pen if the point is not retracted. The pen body is smooth and sleek in a titanium gunmetal finish over sterling. The fountain pen has a 14K gold nib and fills from a bottle only.

Van Gogh "Room in Arles" Fountain Pen

The pen is inspired on Vincent Van Gogh's famous painting, "Bedroom in Arles", 1888, oil on canvas. This painting depicts Van Gogh's bedroom in the Yellow House in Arles, France.
The name of the painting and artist are delicately engraved around the pen's ring, and each pen is packed into a unique gift box that is complemented with a faithfully reproduced canvas of the painting. The pen itself utilizes Visconti's eighteen-faceted design, the many edges enhancing the vivid colors of the pen.

The pen has a stainless steel nib, available in several line widths (23 kt palladium Dreamtouch nib optional), and uses standard international cartridges or the supplied converter.

The collection can be personalized using the well-known Visconti patent- My Pen System - with the instant application of the initials, the zodiac sign or the semi-precious stone preferred by the fortunate future owner of a Visconti pen. The My Pen System applications can be found in our web store.
