Talk to a US navy pilot once. He told me the Harrier is one shitty plane. Good for bombing and ground support but if caught in a dogfight better say your prayers!

The Harrier is a close ground support aircraft. Use by the marines for supporting amphibious landings. And they can take off from helicopter carriers. Can also be stationed near the front lines for air support. Its not really designed as a fighter but can fight if it has too. Just not very good at it.

That was what the Yanks thought during the Vietnam war and did not arm their planes with an internal gun. They realise to their folly when they were out maneuvered and shot down by the Vietnamese Migs. And could not survive dog fights and close encounters as they were only armed with missiles and missiles cant lock in at short range. In the end the yanks had to arm their Phantoms with guns. This enable them to survive better in dogfights. That was also the reason why the top gun school was created. To teach the Navy pilots how to dogfight the migs.
Good points bro. We should also note that the Harrier is essentially a product of the late 1950s and early 1960s and should not be compared with newer designs without qualification. The fact is that no VTOL aircraft has performed better than the Harrier. For the US, until the F35, nothing came close. The Soviets tried in the 1970s with their Yak 38 but ended up with a much more complicated aircraft (with two engines and different thrusters for vertical and horizontal motion.)
