SINGAPORE: Police have arrested five persons at an illegal gambling den operating out of a private apartment.

In a five-hour operation which started at about 4 pm on Tuesday, officers from Bedok Police Division raided the apartment at Lorong 6 Geylang.

Four women and a man between 40 and 52 years of age were arrested.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the 43-year-old man rented the private apartment and allowed it to be used for gambling purposes.

The four women are believed to be patrons.

Police have arrested five persons at an illegal gambling den operating out of a private apartment unit.

In a five-hour operation which started at about 4 pm on 28 May 2013, officers from Bedok Police Division raided a private apartment unit located along Lorong 6 Geylang. Four women and a man between 40 and 52 years of age were arrested.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the 43-year-old man rented the private apartment unit and allowed it to be used for gambling purposes. The four women are believed to be patrons. Three electronic mahjong tables and cash amounting to about $565/- were also seized as case exhibits.

The four women will be charged in Court on 30 May 2013. Investigation against the man is ongoing.

Any person who permits a place to be used as a common gaming house, or assists in managing a common gaming house, shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years. As for the players, any person convicted of an offence of Gaming in a Common Gaming House under Section 7 of the Common Gaming Houses Act, shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding S$5,000/- or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.

Commander of Bedok Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police How Kwang Hwee, said: "Owners have a responsibility to ensure that their premises are not used for illegal activities. Those who allow their residential units to be used for unlawful activities can expect to be taken to task."
