Excessive defense spending and inadequate social spending weakens Singapore.....

Today singapore is the second most militarized nation on.earth after israel. our high defense spending dwarfs our social.spending which is the lowest among developed countries but have the threats changed? is it wise for us to keep going in the same direction and compound the mistakes of the past?

Today singapore faces the problem of a society with high ncome inequality and our inadequate social.spending has led to hardship in a large and increasing segment of our society. this undermines the fabric of Singapore society and.weakens us from the inside. this imbalance can later lead to abrupt and severe changes that will make Singapore weaker.

Today the singapore govt says it has to raise Medishield premium to cover those above 90, they also say Straits Time article says GST may be raised because there is insufficient money to support this....if there is no money, how.come Singapore has money to consider buying the most cost ineffective F35.... this really shows where the priorities of the govt lies . They perpetually fail to.see the needs of the people and fail to adjust to the changes due to globalization. Today our assumed.enemies are dependent on global trade and democratizing rapidly....shifting our real threats from external.to.internal. and Singapore has to address these changes or face more severe problems down the road. it is better for our defense planners to start adjusting to an allocation of the budget that is long term sustainable as our population ages rather than be forced to make abrupt changes later on. They need to build long term capabilities, delay acquisition to forestall obsolescence to make most effective use of a more balanced allocation.

Restoring balance in our spending will give us the best long term survival.odds as our population ages and social needs increases. A society with the highest income inequality without the social safety nets to mitigate the social problems will weaken internally as cohesion among class segments erodes over time - support for the system and willingness to defend it also decrease. Today no developed country has such a big unbalanced budget spending as Singapore. The US spends an equal amount on defense and social spending - both have to be proportionately cut to reduce its countries debt. Israel has significant social spending despite direct and overt threats to its existence, it understands the need for social spending to mitigate the inequalities in society. Singapore unbalanced approach will become increasing unsustainable as our population ages and the proportion of foreigners increase. Singaporeans are told to defend a mixed population when they feel the needs of old, sick and poor are not well taken of compared with those of other developed countries will lower our moral high ground and weaken our position.

Re: Excessive defense spending and inadequate social spending weakens Singapore.....

It the 70s and 80s, we merely spend what was needed to maintain some superiority over Malaysia and Indonesia. But now it seem we are going after the most advance equipments in the world just because it the most 'trendy' things to do and every international players are jumping into the F35 craze just like how everyone is queuing up for hello kitty dolls at MC.

If our armed forces are 2 notches above Malaysia, what difference does it make to push it up to 5 notches? If f-16 with AWACS support is more than enough to defeat Malaysia's F18 and Sukhoi with no AWACS support, why need to waste money to buy F35 to do the same job resulting in the same outcome?

We are pushing everyone into an arms race if you don't realise. The defense industry in US and Europe are very happy with us. To maintain a capability to defend ourselves and a deterrent capability does not require excessive spending....but at some point, they stop pausing to think and only want the best...while the rest of society's needs have to make do with small allocation....but they can't keep doing this as our population ages...they are endangering everyone and it is thoughtless thinking among our elites - none of them have the boldness or integrity to change course.

If the scums could pay themselves at such obscene level they would not even give a glance as to what they are spending for defence vs what they are spending for social issues.

If these ppl can throw nearly $400, I repeat $400 milion over a silly event like YOG and ask what do you need, do you need 3 meals a day in a restaurant or at a hawker center you can forget about receiving any help from such ppl.

Defense spending is far more important than social spending because there are 300 million Muslims surrounding Singapore most within a 500km radius.

In fact the Indo Riau Islands are only kilometers away and can seen from the East Coast Shoreline.

Singapore can never be too careful. Every penny spent on defense is well worth it.

There's no way to defend SG.
The only way is to attack.
Excessive defence spending just to scare enemies.
But then, certain % still needed to pay the PAP IBs here.

If you are so paronoid about ppl who are Muslim, perphaps you need to get your butt off from where ever you have been hiding and go live among them to dispel your unfound fear.

You think at present times if there are any serious outbreak in any region the fighting neighbours will be ones slugging it out?

You should know better than this.

The final outcome is the one who decides if he need to deploy his massive carrier group to park outside your 'gate'.

And the neighbours will suddenly stop fighting!

Why are we spending so much on defence? Are we at war? Or its just a deterent? If its the latter, i guess we have suceeded. Msia has aging military equipment & their leaders are more keen in lining up their pockets rather than spending on rockets. Indons has their own internal problems & dealing with domestic extremist terrorists have got their own milirary hands full.
So who is the bogeyman now?

Agree.

Lack of defense strength will cause investors to go away leaving us poor country without any sustainable economy. Who would put money here when they know anyone can just come by and pluck it?

Succinct and accurate. Chilli padi isn't spicy without the capsaicinoids in its seeds.

Was there an invasion?? you mean the bombing of MacDonald's house along Orchard Rd? in which a woman, right, was killed? an INVASION?? it was a terrorist act...1964 was when were out of self government & the year we were in Malaysia.

That is why I said it is important to spend at a level that is long term sustainable for a deterrent and defense objective. Unsustainable excessive spending when later cut down abruptly will shake confidence.

It is important to separate terrorist acts and war. Kenneth as usual tries to mislead and lie. Terrorist acts are prevented via intelligence operations ...no matter how many tanks and how many fighters you buy, it is not going to help you prevent terrorist acts...in fact it encourages enemies to use terrorist acts because that is your greatest point of weakness.

That was the most publicised because it caused deaths. However, there were other acts of sabotage which were fortunate not have claimed any victims. One of the bombs was planted just 300 metres from where we were living at the time. It broke 6 window panes and caused more damage to the houses that were nearer to the blast.

NEVER take security for granted.

Finding bogeyman to spend more is a lot easier than think hard about the right level of spending to achieve effective defense. Thinking at a strategic long term level taking into consideration our changing demographics and transformation effects of globalization is even harder.

Think of the consequences for a democratic country dependent on world trade that invades another member who is a member of UN. The trade sanctions imposed on the rogue nations will immediately destroy their economy and democratization will mean the loss of power for leaders who cause this. When these countries were under dictators and closed economic. it was a different story.

My suggested strategy revolves around a few key points:

1. Focus and Build advanced operational and technological capabilities.
2. Delay large scale acquisitions so we suffer less from obsolescence.
3. Spend resources to strength Singapore internally.

The SAF provides employment to hundreds of thousands, directly and indirectly, training for future ministers, PSes and such, and demand for a defence industry. Good luck trying to change anything here.
