Defense spending is far more important than social spending because there are 300 million Muslims surrounding Singapore most within a 500km radius.

In fact the Indo Riau Islands are only kilometers away and can seen from the East Coast Shoreline.

Singapore can never be too careful. Every penny spent on defense is well worth it.

So you advocate state-of-the art equipment and scholar generals to fight 300 million Muslims using stone age technology weapons.

I'm not advocating it. The shear numbers would swamp Singapore. However, the concept of a deterrent is to make the cost of aggression towards Singapore as high as possible with the hope that it will be sufficient to prevent it in the first place.

Singapore has no other option except high tech equipment. It certainly does not have the manpower or the size for sufficient defense in depth.

Sheer not shear, Thanks. I agree with your point, however what we are spending is *excessive* for an enemy whose most potent and effective weapon be most probably a home made IED.

Nobody wants our beloved Singapore to be overrun by invaders. Of course, no invader in the right mind would attack singapore unless it sees Singapore as a threat because there is nothing in resources - no oil, no gold, no gas, they can steal and loot. So good diplomacy and maintaining friendly ties is important.

Singapore spends today more than the sum total spent by our 2 big neighbors on defense. This is excessive.

The high defense spending of USA only made it a target of low intensity conflict. Its large military complex only resulted in unnecessary wars and conflicts. Countries spend far less on defense actually enjoy greater safety.

Indonesia, then under Sukarno was a different country. His reason for Confrontasi was to distract his local population from domestic problems and using the formation of Federation as an excuse for threat against Indonesia. When Suharto took over, that stance changed, and besides, Singapore is not part of the Federation anymore - so there is no threat from Indonesia, they are happily trying to grow prosperous and improve their wealth. Malaysia and Indonesia have channeled their efforts to building their economies, and thanks to the formation of ASEAN, that's become a reality for all the neighbours. The present state of military affairs, Singapore is the one pushing the arms race. But the reasons are accepted and even welcomed by her population who wish to play GI Joe.

That was the most publicised because it caused deaths. However, there were other acts of sabotage which were fortunate not have claimed any victims. One of the bombs was planted just 300 metres from where we were living at the time. It broke 6 window panes and caused more damage to the houses that were nearer to the blast.
