in tfb i was forced to work in a farm and subsequently in glf i was forced to abandon the farm and melt all iron and metal alloys including farming tools in homemade backyard kilns. the resulting quality of rojak metal smelted half-assed became unusable, and i starved to death. cr added insult to injury by having copious spit on my grave. high ideals are often instigated by cannon fairies, but it's devil in the details that takes real effect. :o

Mao created Cultural Revolution and it turned China upside down and to slide backwards into the longkang.

Nothing of the sort. The Great Leap Forward not only killed millions it also killed the economy and ruined the agriculture sector. Mao was sidelined and made a figurehead. He had no power. Then Zhao and Deng began to reverse the bad policies of the GFP. The Capitalists and the their sway were practically non existent.

The revisionist crap came from Russia over Kruchev. Mao conveniently used to purge his rivals. In fact this purge nonsense was also carried out in the jungles of Malaysia where the CTs were executed by the tens and hundreds over this period by their own colleagues to emulate the Mao. Chin Peng completely avoided this subject. Its one thing losing your life for your cause and to the enemy but to your own colleagues who had not idea what they were doing. Communism as an ideology and practice was never in danger, just his ridiculous policies and some are truly hare brained scheme such as the eradication of sparrows that caused untold misery.

In fact after Mao lost power he spent his early part of this phase in decadence as they left him alone. As personal level I think he wanted to cleanse his own soul of his decadent lifestyle so conveniently used what left of the capitalist class as an excuse and fodder.

The chinese cultural revolution, like the jewish holocaust and Armenian genocide, are examples of extreme social engineering. Purges and genocides all have one thing in common - power consolidation.

The unique thing about the Cultural revolution is that it was not driven by racism but by fanatic ideology.

The other notorious social engineering experiment was the khmer genocide. Cambodia will never recover from that.
