BETTER PERFORMANCE: Reduced crime index in the city helps police surpass KPI target for solving rate of 45pc

KOTA KINABALU: THE crime index in the city dropped 20.64 per cent last year compared with the previous year, marking the fourth consecutive year of reduced crime cases.

City police chief Assistant Commissioner Jauteh Dikun said they recorded 1,788 cases last year, a reduction of 465 cases compared with 2,253 cases in 2011.

From that figure, 855 cases were solved, hiking the solving rate from 43.5 per cent in 2011 to 47.28 per cent last year, he told a press conference here yesterday.

"We have surpassed the KPI target for the solving rate, which was set at 45 per cent for last year." Among the crimes that recorded a significant drop were thefts, house break-ins at night and street crimes.

"While the crime index saw a decrease, there were, however, an increase in specific types of criminal activity. These included vehicle thefts, where 543 cases of stolen vehicles were reported last year compared with 471 cases previously."

As for serious crimes, Jauteh said murders were down from nine to six cases.

In another development, Jauteh said the city police carried out 48 raids and detained 95 individuals involved in illegal gambling last year.

"We also seized 846 computer sets and 62 slot machines, totalling nearly RM1 million in value."

On traffic cases, 114,355 fines were issued compared with 113,336 fines in the previous year, showing an 8.2 per cent increase.

"The total compound collected also saw a slight increase from RM6.36 million to RM6.52 million last year."
