News outlets have recently reported of a businessman from China who got kidnapped while at a hotel in Genting Highlands, Pahang. The victim, Lang Xiu Tan, shared details of his horrible experience in a press conference at the office of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly for Teratai on 31st January.

The incident reportedly happened on 1st January while 40-year-old Lang was in Genting Highlands after he arrived in Malaysia in mid-December for work purposes. At Genting Highlands, he was approached by several Chinese natives who claimed to have affiliations with the Genting group. The group then offered to show Lang properties in the area for investment.

However, during the two weeks Lang was with the group, he said he was forced to pay them RM200,000 for their services. On 1st January, Lang said the group asked him on a site visit but he turned down the offer. They then lied to him and asked him out for a meal. Once he got in the car, the group started to pester him for money. When he refused to pay, the group drove out of Pahang and brought the businessman to a residential area in Kajang.

Lang said the group left him at a security post and started beating him on the head and back before binding his hands with tape. He added that the group threatened to send him to India if he did not give them more money. The victim was left at the security post with a male guard for several hours but saw an opportunity to escape when the guard fell asleep. When he escaped, he stumbled across a local who took him to the Kajang Police Station to lodge a report.

Lang also reported the incident to the Chinese Embassy but hasn’t received any information regarding the case. Selangor State Legislative Assembly member Yew Jia Haur, who was present at the press conference, said the issue has been forwarded to the Bukit Aman police for further development. He also urged the responsible parties to assist foreigners coming into the country for business to avoid cases like this from happening again.
