SINGAPORE - The four ex-SMRT bus drivers who are in court for inciting their fellow workers to stage the illegal strike last week have said they wish to engage legal counsel.

As a result, the court has adjourned their case until Dec 12.

Bail was set at S$10,000 for three of them (Gao Yue Qiang, 32; Liu Xiangying, 33; Wang Xianjie, 33), while the fourth, He Jun Ling, 32, will need to furnish S$20,000 because he faces one more charge than the rest. They will also have to surrender their passports.

The group, however, said they were unable to find bailors now.

Officials from the Chinese Embassy were in court but declined comment on whether it will assist the four on their bail or engaging lawyers.
.

SINGAPORE: Labour chief Lim Swee Say said on Thursday the protest by the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions over the illegal strike by SMRT bus drivers from China is highly regrettable.

The confederation had said Singapore did not respect the basic rights of workers who go on strike.

It also accused Singapore of not conforming to equal remuneration for its workers.

Mr Lim, who is Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), said that it is highly inappropriate for the unions of other countries to dictate what another country should do.

He said all workers, regardless of nationality, should respect the law of the land.

Mr Lim also said the strike shouldn't have happened and urged management, unions and workers to work closely together.

You cannot force outsiders to accept your lanjiao laws can you?
Union managed and run by PAP members is the first breach of the labour law itself.

The four SMRT drivers from China charged with instigating last week's strike, were on Thursday released on bail pending a further court mention on Dec 12.

Gao Yue Qiang, 32, Liu Xiangying, 33, and Wang Xianjie, 39, were out on bail of $10,000, while He Jun Ling, 32, who faces a second charge of inciting the strike was released on $20,000 bail.

The four accused persons left the Subordinate Courts in taxi, accompanied by a small group of unidentified persons.

It is also not known who posted their bail, although lawyer M.Ravi and representatives from migrant worker groups were present to help in the process.

All four men have indicated in court earlier that they wish to engage lawyers to represent them, although The Straits Times understands that legal representation for the men had already been arranged late Wednesday night.

The four men were among a group of 171 drivers who refused to report for work on Nov 26, and also part of the 88 who stayed away the following day.

They were unhappy about the difference between their wages and those of their Malaysian counterparts.

A fifth former SMRT bus driver, Bao Feng Shan, 38, was on Monday sentenced to six weeks' jail for his role in the strike, while 29 others were sent back to China earlier this week.

4 charged over illegal strike out on bail

By Jacqueline Woo
My Paper
Friday, Dec 07, 2012
SINGAPORE - Four SMRT bus drivers from China who have been charged over their roles in an illegal strike were released on bail yesterday.

By about 5.30pm, all four men, dressed in casual attire, had left the Subordinate Courts in separate taxis.

Gao Yueqiang, 32; Liu Xiang- ying, 33; and Wang Xianjie, 39, were each granted bail of $10,000.

They each face one charge of inciting others to take part in the illegal strike last week, as well as abetting the offence.

Thirty-two-year-old He Junling - who faces an additional charge of inciting the strike via an online post made on Chinese website tieba.baidu.com - was released on $20,000 bail.

While it was not clear how their bail amounts were raised, lawyer M. Ravi and Singapore Democratic Party's Vincent Wijeysingha both appeared in court, and were seen to be assisting in the bail process.

My Paper understands that individuals from a non-governmental group which helps migrant workers in Singapore were also present to help.

Under the conditions for bail, the four accused had to raise the bail amounts and have their passports impounded.

During the hearing, they initially told the court through an interpreter that they were unable to raise the amounts.

The four added that they intended to engage lawyers to represent them.

No pleas were taken.

The men had been in remand since they were charged last Thursday.

On Monday, SMRT bus driver Bao Fengshan, 38, was sentenced to six weeks' jail for his involvement in the illegal strike.

Together with the four accused, Bao was among 171 bus drivers from China who staged a sit-in at their Woodlands dormitory last Monday.

The following day, 88 SMRT bus drivers did not show up for work.

The Chinese bus drivers were unhappy about receiving lower wages compared to their Malaysian counterparts, as well as over the poor living conditions in their dormitories.

A total of 29 SMRT bus drivers from China who were involved in the illegal strike were repatriated on Sunday.

The four accused men are due back in court on Wednesday.
