PKMS should just disband itself...it is an epic failure...the Malays themselves have not supported them...there are many many educated malays...they should just set up a party

Bro Char, government no longer take care of them like what it used to be. Even NTUC is hiring foreigners - PRC, Vietnamese, Pinoy and what not. They just need to do self help. No Queen's English also doesn't matter. It is the thought and effort that count.

I wish them success and hope they can uplift the overall Malay educational standard.

Nah the civil service still have a lot of them around. Even the military is opening up, you even see quite a number of Mat officers in the army these days. Also nursing, police and the more traditional ones like traffic wardens are still dominated by them

Bro Char, good to know that there a quite a number of Malay officers in the SAF. Thanks for the update... straight from the ground :p

So long they have a meaningful job and they are happy, that is what matters most. I thought they are losing ground with those FT? Many traffic wardens are from up north perhaps.

Not only are they getting higher up in rank also getting more important roles. Many of the trainers during my ICT were actually Mat although I don't know if the support arms which were pretty much restricted back in the day have opened up. Probably need to get some young chaps now serving NS to verify

As for traffic wardens going more FT, yes that is true however I am assuming U probably only heard half the story from the usual bunch of hardcore anti FT crowd. The other half of the story is that many of the younger gen Mat are actually moving upwards hence less of them doing this low level jobs. Good example is teaching. We used to only see Malay teachers only teaching malay, these days we see more of them around teaching more different subjects. Also I have a few mat friends moving higher up in the civil service level where traditionally we only see Chinese or Indians. Also used to work with a large number of Mat IT support guys. U also see a lot of them in sales job with local GLCs.

Although I have to say the private sector is still a bit off limits for. First is still the usual stereotyping, 2ndly more businesses are actually demanding their staff to be able to communicate in Chinese with more exposure to China so it's still a bit of a challenge to break into. Overall they are moving upwards, it's just that they are not moving up as fast as the Chinese and Indians.

Generally speaking the FT depressing wages and "stealing" jobs only really affect the very low level jobs. It's not anyway near that bad once U move upwards. It just get overblown on the internet

There's this character in this forum nick named called "mojito" that was demanding that affirmative action be allowed for malays because he mentioned that the chinese were lording over them economically due to fewer malays in university. He was very sneaky about it too because when such policies are put in place it means disciminating someone with better grades to lose out his place in the university for the sake of political correctness.

At the end of the day i suppose it's better to attain it thru your own abilities because some malays were unhappy and it was written on an essay here about how some ppl were claiming they had unfair advantages.

Bro Char,

I am happy to learn that the Malays are moving up the social ladder. That is really good news.

Do you remember what we talked about in the chatroom last nite? - The age group differential.

Perhaps your age group is still okay.

The other factor to note is the industry they are in. Those in the Civil Service, Stat boards and GLC linked companies are unlikely to be affected.

Those in the banking sector, once they are out, it is quite hard for them to get back similar job at even lower pay. Four of of my classmates were retrenched way before the GFC. They gotten chopped around 2003(?). All of them were managerial grade / dept head level. They were only in their late 40's then.

Those in manufacturing were also badly hit. That happened when factories started moving out to Batam, China, Johor and elsewhere. Then those who went overseas with the factories were out of job when they returned SG.

Within the small chat group community of say 10 regular chaps that I know of, I already know 1 of them out of job and living on his past savings. Sorry no name mention.

BTW, my early 50+ years old Engineer brother-in-law, armed with post grad qualification, is driving taxi now. :o

I would not say that it is overblown on the internet. Perhaps you are in the lucky generation.

Banking sector always chop heads one lah. They also hire the fastest. I was headhunted previously by a bank buy decided not to join because of that.

It's now a globalized world. They go where it's cheap. There was talked more than once that my company's local operations is going to move to China. So far only the cost of operations in China is stopping them from moving(jokers who think the PRC earn less than us should really think again). I've seen more than my fair share of friends have to change jobs due to business moving out. And pple keep wondering why the Govt pander to the big businesses and begging them to stay here. Governments the world over are facing the same issue. Nothing much anyone can do about Globalization, country borders means nothing these days. Compared to many places I've worked in we are already doing quite well. I've been visiting Taiwan for work quite often the last few years, they are at the point where young men are moving to China to get decent jobs.

We are not the lucky generation we just adapt better. Being young it's still easy for us to accept change. I've been taking night classes for most of last year just to keep myself certified and up to date. I've also been positioning myself within the organization to be more mobile. That's why I've been accepting project work to India. Why else would anyone be willing to go there. At the end of the day it's how you take to it.

SG is a small country we have always been changing to what the world needs. SG is not like Australia where they have natural resources or like US where they have huge markets, U can probably stay at one place for life and nothing will change. In SG if we don't change we get left behind it doesn't matter what party runs the country it's not going to change that fact. We are still tiny and have to depend on export of goods or services to remain where we are. Why did U think there was a need to open the casino. To open up new industry, keep the country fresh to attract tourist to attract investors. Some claim the PAP has run out of ideas and this was a desperate move. To some extent, yes but this was also a necessary move.

I seriously don't want to see us becoming a country like Taiwan. There is little to nothing any govt can do if they are not able to change with the times. Those who are complacent will become obsolete. US and Europe have started to decline. Sooner or later it's going to be our turn.

U said I am the lucky generation. I think U guys are luckier. U enjoyed the booming 80s and 90s. It wasn't until the financial crisis in 97 that things started to change. I stated working during the Dot com bust. Globalization had already started taking place in the late 90s early 2000. U guys at least enjoyed 2 - 3 decades of easy life, high employment and high pay. I have had to compete with FTs the moment I entered the workforce and had to deal with 4 major global crisis in a decade or so of worklife. It's only after starting to work in my current company and traveling the world I realize competing with FTs in Singapore is nothing. It's the foreigners in their own country that we should really be afraid of. Businesses are going to move out to emerging markets sooner or later. It's a matter of when. At the moment we are still able to attract investments here. I still see new businesses popping up, new companies coming in. Do U think I am able to get another 2 decades out of this? U tell me.

Man...think we are about the same age group...resonate with your post...though I didn't get retrench in the last decades with the multiple crisis resulting in the de-coring of manufacturing jobs..... a lot of my engineering classmates were especially those in hard disk , lower end manufacturing ...

Singapore ability to attract the investments is getting harder by the year ....no chance in attracting new manufacturing industry (the ones that provide lots of engineer/technician/operator types of job) with the escalating cost structure worsen by the inflationary rise of property......simple not competitive...think our next gen will have a bigger challenge than us...

Maybe they should just disband and find a better party to join (WP, NSP or SDP) and seek better candidates to fill the ranks. We have to be ready by 2016.

PKMS should disband.. And their party members should be barred from joining any other Oppo parties after the disbanding of the party.. They should not be allowed to drag down other Oppo parties like WP, SDP and NSP..

This Party and their members are fuckin disgrace to the Oppo cause.. A party full of clowns and dimwits..
