Andre Villas-Boas: I see room for an explosive player like Hulk on the wing at Chelsea

The 34-year-old believes that the Brazil international would fit right in at Stamford Bridge and spoke of his relationship with Porto president Pinto da Costa

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has admitted that he is interested in bringing Porto striker Hulk to London in the summer.

The Portuguese trainer is well aware of Hulk's qualities after coaching the Brazilian forward during his treble-winning 2010-11 season at Porto.

Villas-Boas acknowledged that some of Chelsea's players may leave in the summer, which will create room for the club to bring in new faces, with Hulk at the top of his wish list.

"We have [Salomon] Kalou and [Florent] Malouda, both of whom are nearing the end of their contracts, while Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge are the future," he told TSF.

"As such, there will surely be a place to fill and I see room for an explosive player on the wing, someone who is strong in one-on-one situations and Hulk fits that profile."

The 34-year-old coach was also asked about a potential approach for Alvaro Pereira and Joao Moutinho, who have also been linked with Chelsea in recent times.

"They could surely play in the Premier League and at Chelsea," he asserted.

Villas-Boas sat next to Porto president Pinto da Costa during the Portuguese club's 4-0 Europa League defeat at Manchester City last week after reports had suggested that the duo had an icy relationship since the coach left for Chelsea in the summer.

"I was very proud to be invited by Pinto da Costa to sit next to him," he said.

"Returning to Porto will always be a huge source of pride, but right now I am completely motivated with my work at Chelsea."

No Shaving Until Torres Scores Campaign

TORRESBEARD.gif

Any Chelsea fan thinking of putting off shaving until Fernando Torres ends his goal drought may wish to reconsider, unless they find the thought of looking like Gandalf from Lord of the Rings appealing.

Torres was subbed off after 45 minutes in Chelsea's FA Cup game against Birmingham last Saturday, which marked 20 games and 1,298 minutes since he last scored a goal.

Blues boss Andre Villas Boas has stated that he and the entire Chelsea squad are desperate for Nando to find his shooting boots and suggested that having to fight for a place in the first team could be key to finally getting some goals out of the Spaniard.

'I think everybody is desperate for Torres to score, said AVB. 'Everybody pushes him, praises him in training and it will come with him getting opportunities. His confidence is low but we will have to continue to persist with our belief in his talent.'

'The belief is the same. The only thing that changes is the level of competition for him and maybe that will be the key. More competition will see him push himself that little bit harder and maybe he will eventually reach his goal and targets.'

It is expected that Villas-Boas will drop Torres for the Blues last-16 Champions League game against Napoli after his poor display against Birmingham and the Chelsea boss admitted that Didier Drogba's return from the African Cup of Nation's increases competition for places.

'First, Torres, Drogba and Lukaku will compete in training to be in the team. There's competition in the striker positions and it will be a battle between the three of them. Drogba increases the level of competition. They are all top, top talents.'

Manchester City to shatter £200,000-a-week pay barrier again by offering David Silva new four-year contract

The Spanish playmaker is set to join Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez in the top bracket of City's earners by the end of this season

Mar 1, 2012 7:17:00 AM

150616hp2.jpg

By Wayne Veysey | UK Correspondent

Manchester City will begin new contract talks with David Silva next month – and are ready to make him the fourth £200,000-a-week player at the club.
City officials want to tie the Spaniard down to a new four-year deal before he joins up with the Spain squad at the end of the season to begin preparing for Euro 2012.

Silva’s current contract expires in 2014 and it is understood that City will sit down with the player and his advisers in April to discuss a two-year extension that will keep him at Etihad Stadium until 2016. The early indications from informal discussions held between the club and Silva are that the player is keen to extend his agreement and talks are expected to progress smoothly.

The playmaker’s pay will leap from its present £140,000 mark to elevate him alongside Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez in the top bracket of City earners. City recognise how important it is to hold on to the 26-year-old, who has blossomed into one of the outstanding players in the Premier League during his second season in England.

Silva is one of the frontrunners to win the PFA Player of the Year gong for a campaign in which his combined total of 19 goals and assists in league competition is bettered in that regard only by Robin van Persie, Aguero, Emmanuel Adebayor and Wayne Rooney. Speaking earlier this week, Silva said he was settled in England and praised manager Roberto Mancini for giving him an integral role in the team.

"I am very happy in England, I have two years left on my contract and I want to see it out,” Silva said. "Right now, I do not want to return [to Spain], I am enjoying life in England, people treat me wonderfully and I want to continue enjoying this.

"Mancini has complete trust in me, which is very important for a player and I am very happy. My team-mates are adapting well to my game and that is very good for me."

Arsenal to meet Manchester City in Beijing friendly

Arsene Wenger and Roberto Mancini's sides have both been invited to the Far East this summer and they are set to compete against each other for the inaugural China Cup

Arsenal have announced that they will be travelling to Beijing in July, alongside Manchester City, to complete their pre-season preparations with a one-off match for the China Cup.

On the back of last year's successful trip to the Far East, the Gunners will be accompanied by their Premier League rivals as both sides look to expand their popularity in other markets.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis told reporters: “Further to our hugely successful visit to Hangzhou in 2011, everyone at Arsenal is extremely excited to once again be visiting China this year.

“We enjoy huge support in Asia and by playing a match in Beijing, we will once again be bringing the Club close to our loyal fans in China.

"The players and staff had an amazing time in China last year and we are all looking forward to visiting this great country again in July.

“The match against Manchester City is sure to be an exciting spectacle, with many great players from both sides playing in front of thousands of supporters in the wonderful ‘Bird’s Nest’ Stadium.

"It is also fitting that two English clubs are playing each other on the opening day of the London 2012 Olympics, in the stadium which hosted the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games."

The match has been scheduled for Friday July 27, with kick-off set for 8pm local time.

Why a move to Arsenal is perfect for Germany star Lukas Podolski

As hard as it is for all ‘Effzeh’ fans, the fact remains: a move to London is the best career choice for ‘Prinz Poldi’

Over the last week or so, Arsenal have stepped up their efforts to sign Koln striker Lukas Podolski. Reports from Germany are conflicted as to how advanced negotiations are with the player, but everyone seems to agree that it is only a matter of time before a deal is completed. And should he make his move to London, it would be the right step for Podolski’s career.

In making an early dash to secure the Germany international’s signing, the Gunners are aiming not only to bring an affordable, quality star to convince Robin van Persie to stay, but also to avoid a potential bidding war for the 27-year-old. Having been named the Best Young Player ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the 2006 World Cup, Podolski has a reputation for performing at big international tournaments, and the Gunners are eager to secure him now, rather than wait for his value to increase after Euro 2012.

Podolski has long been on Arsenal’s radar, but Arsene Wenger could not have picked a better time to finally make a move. The London side may be struggling in the Premier League, but now more than ever, the Koln hotshot is ready to leave his hometown club, albeit with a tear in his eye.

"For Podolski, Arsenal would be a good place because Arsene Wenger is an outstanding coach who could bring Lukas to the next level"
- Oliver Bierhoff to Express

Ever since the Bundesliga resumed in January, all arrows for Podolski have pointed away from Koln. Club icon and president Wolfgang Overath was driven out of his office, and the Billy Goats have since slipped from 10th place to 14th, just two spots above the relegation zone.

While sidelined with an ankle injury from late January until last week, 'Poldi' vented his frustration in the media, claiming unrest and an uncertain long-term future for the club. As his side dropped in the table during his absence, he had a clear vision of Koln’s potential, and the burden upon his shoulders.

Because he failed to impose himself at Bayern Munich and was forced to return to the RheinEnergieStadion in 2009, Podolski now bears the unsavoury label of a player who can only perform in his hometown and who needs to be coddled by Germany coach Joachim Low in order to be at his best. The national team trainer has given him support in moving abroad, and Podolski is expected to seek a new challenge overseas. His rivals for a starting berth in the Germany squad, Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Andre Schurrle, are all likely to play in the Champions League or Europa League next season.

In moving to a top European club, Podolski stands to not only strengthen his position internationally, but to finally show the football world that he can succeed anywhere. Even if they do not compete in the Champions League next season, Arsenal are a prestigious address, and will undoubtedly return to the top, especially if Podolski can impose himself.

For Koln, the possibility of Podolski leaving is a tragedy that no one will talk about. Naturally, his sale would result in a mighty ring from the cash register, but money is no substitute for class. And as the club’s marketing figurehead, who sells far more shirts than any other, Podolski’s departure will be a financial blow overall.

Koln could spend some of the estimated €15-20 million raised from his transfer to sign new players, but their problems are widespread and in an inflated market, Podolski’s value will not be recouped in players. In addition, it is unclear as to what portion of his sale will go to Koln, and what will go to investors who helped the club sign him back from Bayern in 2009.

But for Podolski, the future is bright. His pace, creativity, and powerful left foot would be ideal for the Gunners’ attacking style of play. In Per Mertesacker, he will join a colleague from the German national team, and in Wojciech Szczesny, he has a team-mate with whom he can speak Polish. He will be away from home, but the flight back to the Rhineland is only one hour.

And dear FC fans: if 'Poldi' fails in London again as he did in Munich, he leaves with a return address.

Judge rejects Giggs' privacy claim

A damages claim by Manchester United's Ryan Giggs against the Sun newspaper was thrown out by a High Court judge on Friday.

Giggs claimed that The Sun "misused" private information and argued that he was entitled to claim damages for distress and breach of a right to privacy enshrined in human rights legislation. But The Sun argued that Giggs's claim - made after the newspaper published an article about a relationship with reality television star Imogen Thomas - is "dead in the water" and should be stopped.

Mr Justice Tugendhat heard arguments at a High Court hearing in London last month and delivered his ruling today. Hugh Tomlinson QC, for Giggs, argued - at a hearing on February 21 - that The Sun misused private information in the article, in which Giggs was not identified.

Mr Tomlinson said Giggs was claiming damages for the subsequent re-publication of information in other newspapers and on the internet, and argued that his claim should go to trial. He suggested that the Sun article "generated a large media storm" and said the damages claim was about "providing effective protection" for Giggs's right to privacy - enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights.

Richard Spearman QC, for The Sun's publisher News Group Newspapers, said the article reported Ms Thomas's relationship with a Premier League player and did not identify Giggs. He said The Sun behaved "properly" and was not responsible for what happened after the article appeared.

Mr Spearman said legal action had been "spun along for a long, long time" - an allegation Mr Tomlinson described as being "wholly without foundation" - and told the court: "Going forward, there just is not a basis." In a written judgment handed down in London on Friday, Mr Justice Tugendhat said he had decided to "refuse to grant relief" to Giggs.

Comolli insists Liverpool will not spend big this summer

After seeing over £100 milllion spent during Kenny Dalglish's managerial reign, the director of football says adjustments will be made to the squad but not at a similar cost

Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli has revealed that Kenny Dalglish will not have a huge budget to work with in the summer. The Reds have spent lavishly to improve their squad since Dalglish's return including the £35 million signing of Andy Carroll from Newcastle in 2011.

The Anfield club have in fact paid out over £100m since John W. Henry's 2010 takeover and Comolli believes the squad is now only in need of tweaking. He told SkySports: "It is early days. We will probably make some adjustments in the summer but nothing that we've done before.

"We signed nine players since Kenny came back so there will be a few adjustments but nothing massive.
"We have done the hard work and now it is a question of making some adjustments in certain positions.

"Kenny has said it several times that we have a very competitive squad and all positions are covered by two or three players, quality players, and we have a lot of young players coming through as well." Comolli also revealed his delight at the Reds' League Cup triumph and a subsequent early return to European competition, but challenged the team to go on and enjoy more success.

"It is a fantastic statement and also we are back in Europe early in the season," he added. "We know it will bring us positive dynamic for the rest of the season. "It is a fantastic way to end February with a trophy already but we know we have a lot to play for until May."

Return of the Incredible Emile

33c7lhw.jpg

Aston Villa are in need of a goal scoring hero to step up to the plate following the news that their top scorer Darren Bent will be out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury and veteran striker Emile Heskey could be the man to heed the call.

Bent’s injury coupled with the end of Robbie Keane’s loan spell means that Alex McLeish short on striking options and the Villa boss has stated that although he is disappointed with the situation, it will provide an opportunity for other squad members to take on the goal scoring responsibility.

Speaking after hearing news of Bent’s injury, McLeish said: 'You don't want to see any player have that bad luck. It is a big loss to us, such is his prowess as a goalscorer, but it gives an opportunity to others.'

'We have other players who have to take the responsibility, players such as Gabby Agbonlahor and Stephen Ireland. That's the great challenge for them. It's also a chance for them to show they can handle that type of responsibility.'

McLeish only has Gabriel Agbonlahor and Heskey to choose between up front for the rest of the season, meaning the big man could well get a chance to impress and build upon the one goal he has already bagged himself this season.

With Rooney suspended for two games and Bent injured the England squad will also be short on strikers for Euro 2012, sparking fears that the Incredible Heskey may come out of retirement for the tournament.

For England's sake, let's hope not!

Chelsea sack Villas-Boas

The west London club announced that the Portuguese coach has been relieved of his managerial duties, with his No.2 placed in charge until the end of the campaign

Mar 4, 2012 2:00:00 PM

156670hp2.jpg

Chelsea announced that they have parted company with Andre Villas-Boas after a string of poor results, with his assistant Roberto Di Matteo set to take charge until the end of the season.

The Blues suffered a 1-0 away loss to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, a result that leaves the club three points behind Arsenal who occupy the final Champions League position.

Despite making a solid start to the season, Chelsea have struggled of late and have only picked up three league wins in their last 12 games, while they are on the verge of a Champions League exit, trailing Napoli 3-1 after the first leg.

The west London club released a statement on their official website confirming the decision to remove the Portuguese trainer from his position.

"Andre Villas-Boas has parted company with Chelsea Football Club today.

"The board would like to record our gratitude for his work and express our disappointment that the relationship has ended so early.

"Unfortunately the results and performances of the team have not been good enough and were showing no signs of improving at a key time in the season.

"The club is still competing in the latter stages of the Uefa Champions League and the FA Cup, as well as challenging for a top-four spot in the Premier League, and we aim to remain as competitive as possible on all fronts.

"With that in mind we felt our only option was to make a change at this time.

"With immediate effect Roberto Di Matteo has been appointed first team coach on an interim basis until the end of the season."

Di Matteo's first game as head coach will be the FA Cup replay against Birmingham City on Tuesday.

Mario Balotelli facing Manchester City axe after attending strip club in build-up to Bolton clash - report

The Italian striker has been involved in a number of high-profile incidents since his move to Eastlands, with this latest indiscretion likely to test Roberto Mancini's patience

Mar 3, 2012 11:20:00 AM

163877hp2.jpg

Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli has risked the wrath of manager Roberto Mancini after emerging from a strip club in the early hours of Friday morning, according to The Sun.

The controversial forward is in line to start Saturday's clash with Bolton, as Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero have both been on international duty this week whilst Balotelli was left out of the Italian squad.

Coach Cesare Prandelli cited indiscipline as the reason for overlooking the former Inter man, but now the more pressing issue will be whether Mancini wields the axe on Balotelli and drops him for the clash at Eastlands.

The 21-year-old was pictured emerging from Liverpool strip bar 'X In The City' at 2.45am on Friday, and whilst tee-total Balotelli had not been drinking, Mancini imposes a strict curfew on players 48 hours before a match.

Balotelli has only just returned from a four-match retrospective ban for stamping on Scott Parker during City's 3-2 win over Tottenham two months ago.

Mancini leapt to the defence of his 21-year-old forward on Friday, ironically before finding out about his late-night frolics, by claiming that he is the best striker Italy possess.

The Italian said: "Mario is the best Italian striker, 100 per cent. I hope after this week, with him not playing for Italy, it will help him in for the rest of this season.

"We know Mario is a top player but he should improve his behaviour."

The default response of Roman Abramovich to an indifferent series of results is always to reach for the red button and eject another manager.

Like a Bond villain, his fingers get itchy and he can’t help himself from removing the most obvious obstacle to improved circumstances for Chelsea, his fiefdom for the last nine years.

While Andre Villas-Boas has not received the same tidal wave of sympathy that followed the dismissal of his double-winning predecessor Carlo Ancelotti on the final day of last season, there is no shame for the Portuguese in becoming, after Claudio Ranieri, Jose Mourinho, Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari and Ancelotti, the sixth casualty of Roman’s empire.

The Portuguese has made mistakes and his dictatorial approach has not gone down well with players used to being more influential than is healthy for any group of players at a marquee club.

But his time will come again. He is too young, ambitious and analytical not to be a managerial success at another club. For now, we will miss his exotic football terminology, mangling of adjectives and touchline gymnastics, if not his strangely sterile team.

Frankly, the side he put together was not up to much. To be languishing three points behind fourth place after more than two-thirds of the season and teetering on the brink of elimination from the Champions League borders on a dereliction of duty.

For Abramovich, the hoy grail has always been the Champions League. And not just participation, either. That is the minimum objective. Abramovich wants a Barcelona-style dynasty - season after season of rubbing shoulders with the high rollers in the last four of Europe's elite competition.

Getting knocked out in the first round while holding down a Europa League place was always likely to lead to Villas-Boas' life support machine being switched off, despite the noises from the top of the club that it was different this time and that the owner was in for the long haul.

Yet that does not take into account the unique circumstances at Chelsea, where Villas-Boas was charged with simultaneously introducing a more expansive playing style and keeping Chelsea in the hunt for honours while the spine of the team that has won three league titles in the Abramovich era aged before his eyes.

The problem of the Stamford Bridge managerial merry-go-round is that the players are so used to surviving the senior coaching staff that they regard the manager’s authority as forever compromised.

How can they give the man in the dugout absolute respect when they know he is always a patchy run of results away from the boot?

At Chelsea, more than any other big club, the senior players hold sway. They saw off Scolari and Grant, certainly, and have now done the same to the man hired at the cost of £28m last summer.

The dilemma of easing out the old guard is not eased by axing Villas-Boas. It is actually more difficult.
John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Petr Cech, Ashley Cole and Michael Essien are loved by the fans. They are regarded as legends, permanent fixtures whoever picks the team.

Yet the manager, the public face of the club, is a diluted, albeit extravagantly rewarded, figure who is a sticking plaster for the team’s ills, not the permanent medicine he should be.

Perhaps Abramovich would be better off allowing the old guard to pick the team and choose their own personal retirement dates.

Or even better, dispense with the idea of a manager altogether and select the team himself from his luxury yacht.

While the owner continues to change manager more often than most of us buy a new pair of socks, Chelsea will always be operating with one hand tied behind their backs.

The AC Milan boss has suggested that the Gunners' trophy drought is due to the lack of star players and insists they must spend big in order to rectify it

AC Milan boss Massimilano Allegri believesthat Arsenal's six-year trophy drought is due to a lack of big name players and insists they must "buy big" to start winning again.

Allegri, whose side hold a 4-0 first-leg lead over the Gunners ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash at the Emirates, criticised Arsenal's policy of cashing in on big name players.

The Italian believes the sales of the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri have shown fans that the club lack ambition, something which he insisted is not manager Arsene Wenger's fault.

Speaking to The Sun, he said: "For me it's impossible to win the title or Champions League without signing big players.
"You will never do it without big players. That goes for Arsenal, Milan or any big club. You must buy big.

"I have a strong team but in that I have three big players, bringing experience, character, technical ability and leadership. You need leaders.

"It's not fair to criticise Wenger so much and it is not right, because every year Arsenal sell one big player or two big players and the team still manage to play well and finish in the top four.

"But it's also true that if they want to win trophies they have to keep their best players. And make two or three big signings.

"If somebody told me this summer we have to sell Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] and [Kevin] Prince [Boateng] I would say no. No. No."

Former Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari claims it will be "hell" for whoever succeeds Andre Villas-Boas as manager of the Blues.

Scolari, now manager of Brazilian side Palmeiras, is not surprised the Portuguese was sacked so soon into his reign at Stamford Bridge because he thinks Chelsea are different to other English clubs.

The former World Cup winner also feels the 34-year-old failed to adequately replace players that needed ousting from the team even during his time with the club but is confident Villas-Boas will go on to succeed elsewhere.

Scolari told reporters: "England has clubs like Arsenal, where Arsene Wenger has been for several years, yet has won only two or three championships.

"But Chelsea's culture is very different, but this move is strange - although it's not so strange to me because of what I went through there.

"Some things are known, like the relations with the chairman, who has the relationship with some players before the coach.

"Villas-Boas was a champion and he will continue to be. He needed to replace at least seven or eight players, even since I was there, but he failed.

"It will be hell for whoever succeeds him."
