Actually, if you look into his family, even his parents can't handle him.
He is insolent, disobedient and takes things in his own hands without giving any consideration for others. He is deprived of his father's love. He refuses to listen to him. He hates authority figure that resembles his "horrible" father. In reality, he has no connection with the authority figure at all. He uses social media to vent his frustration on all things seemingly related to his situation at home just to get at his dad. He seeks the love and adulation showered on him from the social media's acceptance of his "heroics".
You have never heard of amos' pitch on the PAP before until the day when the whole nation mourned for the passing of the late LKY. Did he suddenly get fired up by the political issues of the day ? What triggered him ?
So, in all honesty, this is a family problem that get convoluted with the politics because of what he wanted to get back at his dad.

JBJ and Chee were way more defiant than Amos Yee. Look at how Ah Gong gelded them and brought them to their knees. Yee is a small case. A year from now, people won't even remember who Yee is. And Yee would be serving NS, where he would fear his sergeant's displeasure more than he fears our PM Lee.
