De Laurentiis scuffles with Napoli fan

6 April 2014

437816header.jpg

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis was involved in an altercation with a fan, after their Serie A loss to Parma.

The Hollywood film producer oversaw his side's 1-0 loss away to Parma on Sunday, with the club failing to further consolidate their holding of the final UEFA Champions League spot in Italy.

De Laurentiis, 64, was departing the Stadio Ennio Tardini, and was in the carpark when he was caught approaching a Napoli fan.

The incident was caught on camera, with a plethora of security quickly on the scene to shuffle De Laurentiis into his van.

In his post-match assessment, Napoli coach Rafa Benitez said De Laurentiis was disappointed with the loss, despite the Stadio San Paolo outfit still sitting nine points clear in third spot.

Benitez concedes Napoli ´missing something´

7 April 2014

437829header.jpg

Napoli coach Rafael Benitez conceded his team still lack the consistency required to challenge for the Serie A title.

Parma trumped Napoli 1-0 on Sunday thanks to Marco Parolo's fine strike from the edge of the area in the 55th minute, which left Benitez's team on 64 points in third, 12 behind second-placed Roma.

Benitez remains convinced Napoli will finish third, as they have a nine-point gap on fourth-placed Fiorentina with six games to play, but the Spanish coach declared the Naples club does not yet have enough quality to challenge the likes of Roma and leaders Juventus.

"We have a team with quality, it has its strengths and weaknesses, which we need to analyse and learn to improve. Lack of consistency in a game is one of those things," Benitez told Sky Sport Italia.

"Every player has his characteristics and it's not easy to change everything. We changed many things (before the season), are in third place, but there's a long way to go yet until we can create a team that has the right mentality to win every game.

"That is what I want and what I'm working towards.

"I still consider this a very, very positive campaign. However, you can tell we are missing something.

"We won't finish second, as Roma win those games that we do not. This is the reality and we have to work every day to improve but in the meantime we can lock down third and prepare for the Coppa Italia final."

Napoli will take on Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia final on May 3 as Benitez aims to win his first piece of silverware with the Neapolitans.

The 53-year-old Spaniard was disappointed his team failed to convert their dominance into a victory in Parma as Napoli had 57 per cent possession and took 11 shots to five.

"We are all disappointed to lose a game that was under control in the first half and at the end of the day Parma only had one shot on goal," Benitez said.

"We had a great chance and we missed it."

Inter handed Jesus injury blow

The defender is set to be on the sidelines for a number of months after suffering a serious injury on Saturday

Inter have confirmed defender Juan Jesus ruptured the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during Saturday's 2-2 draw with Bologna.

The Brazilian was forced off in the first half against Bologna, with scans revealing the full extent of the injury, effectively ended any hope he may have had of featuring at the World Cup later this year.

A statement from Inter on Sunday read: "Juan Jesus underwent diagnostic procedures this morning after being forced off the pitch in the 28th minute of last night's match against Bologna.

"The examinations revealed a complete rupture of the medial collateral ligament in the defender's right knee."

Jesus has not featured for Brazil since 2012, but has been a mainstay for Walter Mazzarri's Inter this season, making 29 appearances in all competitions.

Walter Samuel replaced Jesus against Bologna and is likely to fill in at centre-half for the remainder of the campaign as as Inter aim to secure a place in next season's Europa League.

Maran sacked for second time this season by Catania

387797_heroa.jpg

Apr 6, 2014 10:29:00 PM

The 50-year-old was in charge at the start of the season but was sacked and rehired before the latest run of five consecutive defeats lead to him being dismissed

Catania have sacked Rolando Maran for the second time this season following Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Torino.

Maran will be replaced by Maurizio Pellegrino, who has previously managed the club in Serie C1 and has been involved with the youth academy this season.

The dismissal comes after a fifth consecutive league defeat, and a seventh in the last eight games which leaves Catania stranded at the bottom of the league, seven points from safety with six games season remaining this season.

Maran was previously sacked earlier in the season when the first eight games yielded only five points and one win, being replaced by Luigi De Canio.

However, the club's form did not pick up and Maran was rehired on January 15 in a bid to turn around Catania's fortunes.

But the 50-year-old has managed just one Serie A win in 13 games since then, leaving the club with an uphill task to maintain their top-flight status.

It is a sad end for Maran, who enjoyed a superb first season with Catania, which saw them finish eighth in the league with a record 56 points, missing out on a Europa League spot by just five points.

Serie A: Juventus 2 Livorno 0

7 April 2014

437975header.jpg

Fernando Llorente was Juventus' hero as he scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Livorno that cements a top-two finish in Serie A.

With third-placed Napoli losing to Parma on Sunday, Juve coach Antonio Conte knew three points against their relegation-threatened visitors on Monday would seal UEFA Champions League football next season.

And the reigning champions, who are now eight points clear of Roma in second and 20 in front of Napoli with just six games remaining, put in an assured display with Llorente, who sat out the midweek UEFA Europa League win at Lyon, striking twice in three first-half minutes.

The Spaniard's first was an emphatic finish from inside the six-yard box, and he then saw a near-post header creep under Francesco Bardi to ensure Juve bounced back from just their second league defeat of the season at Napoli last week by maintaining their perfect home record in Serie A this term.

The second half lacked the intensity of the first, with neither side really coming close to scoring, as Juve seemed content to control proceedings by dominating possession.

Livorno, meanwhile, stay two points adrift of safety in 18th place.

After threatening through Innocent Emeghara in the opening minute, the visitors struggled to contain Conte's side and their goal led a charmed life.

Giorgio Chiellini and Stephan Lichtsteiner wasted early chances for the hosts, but Juve’s pressure eventually paid dividends with Llorente’s quickfire double just after the half-hour mark.

Carlos Tevez was the architect for the opener, as he played a neat pass into Llorente, before the Spaniard spun away from his marker and lashed the ball into the top corner.

The 29-year-old then doubled his tally with a close-range header. Andrea Pirlo delivered a corner to the near post and Llorente's header somehow squirmed under Bardi.

Paul Pogba and Tevez both had opportunities to extend Juve's lead further in the closing minutes of the half, but their long-range efforts were just wide of goal.

The start of the second half mirrored the first as Livorno came out very quickly, but their inability to test Gianluigi Buffon meant the hosts were able to keep them at bay.

Juve were far from their best after the break and looked to hit their opponents on the counter-attack, although chances were at a premium.

Llorente's search for a hat-trick saw his first sight of goal in the second half hit the side-netting, while Pogba scuffed an opportunity wide from inside the area.

Livorno's Alfred Duncan finally called Buffon into action just before the hour, and the Italy keeper was equal to his long-range effort with a one-handed save.

With Thursday's Europe League quarter-final second leg with Lyon on the horizon, Conte was able to rest Pogba, Llorente and Tevez in the final 20 minutes of the match as Juve took another step towards their third consecutive Scudetto.

Cagliari sack Lopez

7 April 2014

437839header.jpg

Cagliari have sacked coach Diego Lopez following the club's 3-1 home defeat to Roma on Sunday.

The Serie A outfit slumped to their fourth defeat in five games, leaving them seven points clear of the relegation zone with six matches remaining.

And controversial president Massimo Cellino, who is poised to complete his takeover of English Championship side Leeds United, has decided to pull the pin on Lopez's nine-month tenure.

Cellino had looked set to miss out on Leeds United having been found guilty of tax evasion but won his appeal against the English Football League over the weekend.

The Italian entrepreneur has overseen 36 managerial changes in two separate spells as president of Cagliari.

"The necessity to shake up the team in this final stage of the season to achieve the objective of safety made a change of management indispensible," read a Cagliari statement.

"This decision is very painful, as Lopez has proved himself as a professional and a man, and in the past as a symbol and captain of the squad.

"The club thanks the coach for his work and wishes him all the best for his future endeavours."

Lopez, who made 344 league appearances as a player for Cagliari before retiring in 2010, was appointed manager at the start of the season after serving as an assistant coach in 2012.

Benatia future to be discussed soon

7 April 2014

437904header.jpg

In-demand Roma defender Mehdi Benatia will discuss his future with the club soon, according to his agent.

The Moroccan has been an almost constant figure in Rudi Garcia's team this season, prompting some to link him with a move away from the Stadio Olimpico at the end of the season.

However, with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United reportedly circling, the player's agent insists his future will be addressed in the near future.

"The leaders at Roma are aware of the fact that other big clubs are interested in Mehdi," Moussa Sissoko told Le 10 Sport.

"We'll have a meeting with the club soon and we'll see what happens from there.

"At the moment though, all I will say is that the lad feels very good in Rome."

Benatia has made 30 league starts for Roma since signing from Udinese in the close season, scoring five goals.

Napoli to redevelop Stadio San Paolo, says mayor

7 April 2014

437914header.jpg

The mayor of Naples has claimed that Napoli are set to remain at Stadio San Paolo and give the famous stadium a complete overhaul.

The Serie A outfit were expected to move away from the iconic venue to a new home, but mayor Luigi de Magistris has revealed that an agreement has been reached to transform Stadio San Paolo.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is now due to put forward funds to confirm the club's commitment to the project.

De Magistris told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli on Monday: "I can confirm that we are on the right track.

"On Friday we sent the necessary documentation to Napoli so that they know the exact fees to be paid.

"Without this there would need to be a delay in proceedings. Napoli will play at San Paolo and there will be a commitment to redeveloping the entire stadium.

"We have now reached an agreement, thanks to De Laurentiis making himself available. He will pay the amount due before we move on to discuss the next steps.

"Sometimes things are not easy to sort out. Things will begin to move forward immediately. Once the payment has been received we can sign for the plan to go ahead.

"I would like for the research to be done before the end of the year, at which point there will be a commitment to putting the necessary money in to fund the building of the stadium.

"Will there be an athletics track? There is a commitment to create a project, I will trust those who have designed the most beautiful stadiums.

"I want a project worthy of football and of the city. There will be a debate to discuss the issue, at the moment the most important thing is that we have reached an agreement.

"We may decide to move the stands forward, but we may also decide to leave the athletics track in place."

Lazio lose Klose to injury

8 April 2014

438150header.jpg

Lazio's Serie A run-in has been dealt a blow with the news that Miroslav Klose has been ruled out for four weeks with a hamstring injury.

The German is Lazio's top-scoring striker this season with seven goals in the league, but he may have played his last game of the season after suffering the injury.

Klose's last appearance for Lazio came in their 3-2 victory over Parma at the end of March. He was not involved in their win over Sampdoria last weekend and the club have confirmed a hamstring problem has been identified.

Uruguayan midfielder Alvaro Gonzalez is also set for a spell on the sidelines with a muscle injury, and he too is expected to be out for at least a month.

"Today Miroslav Klose and Alvaro Gonzalez were subject to specialist investigations," the club announced on their website.

"Investigations on Klose showed the presence of a lesion on his left hamstring, (with) the expected recovery time four weeks.

"Alvaro Gonzalez (also) showed the presence of a lesion on his right thigh."

Lazio, who can still qualify for Europe next season, have six games remaining of the league campaign including matches against Napoli and Inter.

Destro handed four-match suspension

8 April 2014

438111header.jpg

In-form Roma forward Mattia Destro has been suspended for four matches after appearing to strike Cagliari's Davide Astori.

The incident, which was missed by match referee Davide Massa and his fellow officials, occurred in the 33rd minute of the Serie A contest at the Stadio Sant'Elia on Sunday.

Destro scored a hat-trick in Roma's 3-1 triumph and has now netted seven goals in his last five matches.

But Roma's remote title chances will be further blighted by Destro's absence after a video review of the clash between the 23-year-old and defender Astori revealed wrongdoing on his part.

Serie A's governing body have handed him a three-game ban and an additional one-game sanction for the number of yellow cards he has accumulated following a caution three minutes before half-time in Sardinia.

Destro has scored 13 goals for Roma this season and is considered to have an outside hope of place in Italy's squad for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

However, Destro's transgression may see him fall foul of Italy's code of ethics set by coach Cesare Prandelli, who reserves the right to refuse to call up any player who performs an action he does not approve of.

Rudi Garcia's Roma will have to rely on the likes of Gervinho, Adem Ljajic and club legend Francesco Totti to provide the goals in Destro's absence as they aim to reduce the eight-point gap to Serie A leaders Juventus.

The capital club have just six games to overhaul that deficit and face the defending champions in the penultimate round of the campaign, which will mark Destro's return from suspension.

Williams ready to speak to Napoli, says agent

9 April 2014

438268header.jpg

Swansea City captain Ashley Williams is "ready to talk" if Napoli make an approach for his services, according to the player's agent.

Reports in Italy this week suggested that Napoli coach Rafael Benitez was preparing to make an offer after being impressed by the defender during the Italian club's UEFA Europa League meetings with Swansea.

Williams, who is out of contract at the end of the end of next season, has long been linked with a transfer to Arsenal, but a switch to Serie A could tempt him.

His agent, Peter Smith, however, insists that talk of a move to Italy is just speculation at present.

"There has been talk of meetings with the club or with Rafa Benitez, but there's no truth in that at the moment," Smith told Napoli Calcio Live.

"Clearly we are talking about a great club with an international level manager, so we are ready to talk to Napoli if a call were to come.

"However, until the possibility becomes concrete, there's no point talking about it."

Williams has become one of the Premier League's most consistent defenders following his arrival at Swansea from Stockport County in 2008.

Since Swansea were promoted in 2011, the Wales international has played an integral role in maintaining the club's top-flight status.

The 29-year-old also captained Swansea to victory in the final of the League Cup last season.

Mancini dismisses talk of Inter return

9 April 2014

438247header.jpg

Galatasaray coach Roberto Mancini has played down reports linking him with a return to Inter.

Various newspapers in Italy have tipped Mancini to move back to the San Siro after reports suggested the club had expressed an interest in the Italian.

Walter Mazzarri's position as coach of Inter has come under scrutiny after a run of four games without victory in Serie A, despite reassurances from president Erick Thohir.

Inter are fifth in the standings, 14 points adrift of the final UEFA Champions League spot with six games remaining.

But Mancini, who guided Inter to three consecutive Serie A titles between 2005 and 2008, intends to see out his contract with Galatasaray, having only replaced Fatih Terim on a three-year deal in September.

"My work here at Galatasaray will continue," Mancini said to Sporx.com.

"What is said about Inter is a lie.

"The same is true of the rumours linking me with the national team job in the future.

"I have a contract with Galatasaray and I will stay here."

Mancini is rumoured to be unsettled in Turkey with the club 10 points behind arch-rivals Fenerbahce in the race for the Super Lig title.

Milan and Inter fighting over Europa League crumbs

By Terry Daley

(Reuters) - Accustomed to fighting for the game's biggest honours, Inter Milan and AC Milan finds themselves in a seven-team scrap for a place in the unloved Europa League as their patchy Serie A campaigns draw to a close.

Seven-times European champions Milan host bottom club Catania on Sunday (7.45 p.m. British Time) and are in the strange position of being in with a shout of a Europa League spot despite languishing in 11th place, after a bizarre season that has cost them one manager and featured infighting behind the scenes.

Clarence Seedorf, who won two Champions Leagues with the club as a player, has had a rocky ride since taking over as coach from Massimiliano Allegri in January.

But an upturn in form - his side have picked up 10 points from a possible 12 and have won three on the bounce - have left Milan five points behind fifth-placed Inter who have only picked up three points over the same period.

They also have a much easier run-in than Inter, with three of their final six matches at home to the current bottom three.

"The atmosphere has improved a lot, and winning helps. Good results help everyone, coaches, players, directors and fans," said Adriano Galliani, who is one of Milan's two CEOs alongside Barbara Berlusconi.

Inter travel on Sunday (1300) to Sinisa Mihajlovic's Sampdoria, who have been a tough proposition since the Serb arrived in late November.

Their final six games are significantly tougher too. After Samp they travel to Parma, with whom they are level on 50 points, and they also have to face third-placed Napoli and Lazio, who are two points behind them in seventh, at the San Siro.

There is also the small matter of the Milan derby on Sunday May 4, in which they are the nominal away side.

Walter Mazzarri's side currently occupy the second and last Europa league spot, although a sixth place finish could offer a place in the competition.

Both Fiorentina, who lie five points ahead of Inter in fourth, and Napoli contest the Italian Cup final in May. The cup offers a place in the Europa League and both sides are almost certain to finish in the European places, meaning that sixth place will take the last spot.

This opens up the race to a host of clubs, including Milan. However they will have to get past Parma, Lazio, Hellas Verona, Atalanta and Torino, all of who are sandwiched between Inter and Milan.

World Cup hopeful Mattia Destro has put title-chasing AS Roma under a cloud after receiving a four-game ban for being caught by cameras punching Cagliari defender Davide Astori during Sunday's 3-1 win in Sardinia.

Destro scored a hat-trick in a win that temporarily brought them five points behind league leaders Juventus, who then beat Livorno and travel to Udinese on Monday (7.45 p.m. British Time).

Roma host Atalanta on Saturday (7.45 p.m. British Time).

Rossi, Gomez boosts for Fiorentina

10 April 2014

438561header.jpg

Fiorentina have been handed a double fitness boost, with Giuseppe Rossi returning to training and Mario Gomez soon set to join him.

The strikers have each been plagued with injuries this season, and their respective absences have hindered Fiorentina's hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

Italy international Rossi has been unavailable since January when he suffered ligament damage in his right knee in a Serie A clash with Livorno.

Gomez missed five months earlier in the season with a serious ligament injury, also in his right knee, and his return in March proved brief as the Germany forward suffered a sprain to his left knee in a 1-0 win at Napoli.

Fiorentina are now hopeful of having both men available for the club's Coppa Italia final with Napoli on May 2, although it remains to be seen whether either will be able to gain selection for the FIFA World Cup.

"It is now three months since Rossi had his injury on 5th January," team doctor Paolo Manetti told the club's official website. "The road to getting him back fit again is coming to an end.

"The player has been working on the pitch for two weeks now. Since then has has been working with the group but avoiding heavy tackles.

"We will monitor how his knee is doing. The target is to get him to a competitive level for the Coppa Italia final.

"As for Mario Gomez, he will return to the group next week while we continue to monitor him.

"For him too, the target is to have him at 100 per cent for the cup final."

De Sanctis rules out Italy return

10 April 2014

438565header.jpg

Roma goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis has moved to quell speculation he will end his international exile and join Italy's FIFA World Cup squad.

The 37-year-old called time on his international career just over a year ago, having failed to usurp Gianluigi Buffon as Italy's regular number one.

De Sanctis has been in fine form for Roma this season, helping the club to second place in the Serie A table.

That has led to rumours Italy coach Cesare Prandelli may ask De Sanctis to travel to Brazil later this year, with Juventus' Buffon and Paris Saint-Germain's Salvatore Sirigu likely to occupy two of the three goalkeeping spots.

De Sanctis has distanced himself from an international return though, telling reporters: "As far as the World Cup goes, I left the national team a year ago for both footballing and non-footballing reason.

"I left the team in extremely good hands, both with Buffon who has been magnificent for twenty years and with whichever other goalkeepers Prandelli chooses to take with him to Brazil."

When asked about Roma, De Sanctis insists there will only be happy memories of the present campaign, even if they fail to overhaul Juventus' eight-point gap at the top of the table.

He added: "Up until now we are extremely happy, but we could be even happier were there not a team eight points ahead of us.

"There are six matches to go now and we want to do well in all of them. Whatever happens though we will look back on the season as an extremely positive one."

Torino´s Farnerud out for season

10 April 2014

Torino midfielder Alexander Farnerud has been ruled out for the season after suffering a knee ligament injury in training.

The 29-year-old sustained the injury during training on Thursday and was immediately assessed by the club's medical staff.

Farnerud's worst fears were confirmed, as the club confirmed that he had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The Sweden international will undergo surgery in the coming days, after which the club will be able to estimate how long he will be out of action for.

It comes as a blow to the 10th-placed Torino and the player himself, who has scored four times this season, the last of which set up the 2-1 victory at Catania on Sunday.

Marotta baffled by Tevez Argentina snub

11 April 2014

438709header.jpg

Carlos Tevez's absence from the Argentina squad is due to "non-football" reasons, according to Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta.

Tevez, capped 64 times at international level, has not represented his country since the Copa America back in 2011.

Alejandro Sabella succeeded Sergio Batista as coach following that tournament but he has resisted the urge to call upon Tevez, who has scored 18 goals in Serie A since joining Juventus from Manchester City at the start of the season.

The 30-year-old is expected to miss out on the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Brazil and Marotta is surprised he is still being overlooked.

"Clearly Tevez is a man and therefore aspires to wear the jersey of his country, especially at a World Cup," Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

"He deserves it for his talents, but the coach makes his decisions. I think it is down to non-football situations we don’t know.

"As a professional, Tevez accepts this decision with disappointment, but understanding, realising he can gain satisfaction elsewhere in his career."

Argentina will face Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria in Group F.

The two-time World Cup winners kick-off their campaign against debutants Bosnia and Herzegovina in Rio de Janeiro on June 15.

Garcia confident of overturning Destro ban

10 April 2014

438510header.jpg

Rudi Garcia is hopeful Roma can overturn Mattia Destro's four-match ban for an apparent strike on Cagliari's Davide Astori on appeal.

The incident occurred in the 33rd minute of Sunday's Serie A clash at the Stadio Sant'Elia, with Destro subsequently going on to score a hat-trick in a 3-1 triumph for Roma.

Referee Davide Massa did not take action against Destro during the game, but - after the reviewing of video footage - the 23-year-old was hit with a three-game ban and an additional one-match sanction for the number of yellow cards he has accumulated following his caution three minutes before the break in Sardinia.

Roma's slim title hopes are sure to be hindered by the absence of the in-form Italy international, but head coach Garcia is confident of reversing the decision.

Speaking to LA7, he said: "The appeal? It is logical that we can win it. He is not a violent player, at all. Football is a contact sport, players fight to take position on the field and these things happen.

"The referee saw everything, he whistled against him and normally the rule states that there can be no video evidence when the referee saw the situation.

"I think now this is more than video evidence. I do not believe that Roma are being persecuted, I do not think about these things.

"The only thing that matters is doing well and if Destro is not there then there will be someone else."

Serie A Preview: Roma still dreaming of silverware

10 April 2014

438468header.jpg

Rudi Garcia has not given up hope of guiding Roma to the Serie A title this season.

Roma are eight points adrift of league leaders Juventus with six matches remaining after last weekend's 3-1 triumph at Cagliari.

The Rome-based outfit have won six games in succession, scoring 16 goals in the process.

Juve, who are away to Udinese on Monday, are in the box seat to claim a third consecutive Scudetto crown but Garcia is still dreaming of silverware ahead of Roma's clash with Atlanta at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.

"We are advancing, step by step, so we can stun our opponents," said Roma coach Garcia, who will be without striker Mattia Destro following his ban for punching Cagliari's Davide Astori.

Roma and Juventus go head-to-head on May 9; a match that could determine the title.

Third-placed Napoli will be keeping a close eye on proceedings over the weekend.

Rafael Benitez's men were beaten 1-0 by high-flying Parma to slip 12 points adrift of Roma in the race for second spot.

Napoli must overcome Lazio on Sunday if they are to stand any chance of finishing in the top two.

Elsewhere over the weekend, 11th-placed AC Milan could rise as high as seventh in the standings if they emerge victorious at home to cellar dwellers Catania on Sunday.

Milan are in the midst of a three-game winning streak, their first such run in Serie A this season, following wins over Genoa, Chievo and Fiorentina.

The Italian giants could end the weekend in seventh spot if results go their way, and could be just two points outside the Europa League places.

Fourth-placed Fiorentina are also in action on Sunday, travelling to Hellas Verona, who ended their six-game winless run at home last weekend.

Inter Milan, linked with a move for former coach Roberto Mancini, can consolidate fifth position with victory at Sampdoria.

In other fixtures, Cagliari will begin life without sacked boss Diego Lopez when they make the trip to second-bottom Sassuolo on Saturday.

Relegation-threatened Bologna welcome Roberto Donadoni's Parma to the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.

Livorno and Chievo do battle in a bottom-of-the-table clash at the Stadio Armando Picchi on Sunday, while Torino - led by the league's joint-top scorer Ciro Immobile (18) - entertain Genoa.

Title race not over, insists defiant Garcia

11 April 2014

438790header.jpg

Roma coach Rudi Garcia is adamant that the Serie A title race is not over despite Juventus holding a commanding advantage.

Juve head second-placed Roma by eight points with six rounds of games remaining in the Italian top flight, and are on course to be crowned champions for a third consecutive season.

However, while Garcia recognises his side, who host Juventus in their penultimate league game next month, are underdogs, he has not given up hope of leading Roma to a first Scudetto since 2001.

Ahead of Saturday's meeting with Atalanta, Garcia said: "At this stage second place is more doable because it's the only one we can defend as in our own hands, while top spot is the only one we can attack.

"There are only three home matches left and we need to enjoy every last second and drive this team on, which will fight until the end.

"I believe in my players: I'm calm, up for it and motivated.

"The title race is not over and nor will it be tomorrow (Saturday) night."
