Rodriguez: I will come back stronger

6 February 2015

784501header.jpg

A fractured metatarsal has failed to dampen the spirits of Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, who has promised to come back stronger.

Real Madrid star James Rodriguez has vowed to come back stronger than ever after suffering a fractured metatarsal.

The Colombia international required surgery after damaging the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during Wednesday's 2-1 La Liga victory over Sevilla, in which he scored the opener.

Rodriguez is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but the forward remains in positive spirits.

"I will recover and come back stronger than ever," he posted on Twitter.

"The messages [I have received] are very supportive. Thank you!"

Rodriguez moved to the Santiago Bernabeu in a high-profile move from Monaco among much fanfare in the close-season, after impressing at last season's World Cup where he collected the Golden Boot award.

The former Porto star has scored 12 goals in all competitions for Real this season.

Simeone: Changing style would a total disaster

6 February 2015

784785header.jpg

Diego Simeone has promised Atletico Madrid will not water down their robust approach ahead of Saturday's derby with Real Madrid.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone believes it would be a "total disaster" for his side to tone down their physical approach in Saturday's derby with fierce rivals Real Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

Since Simeone took over at Atletico in 2011, the Spanish champions have often been accused of being overly physical - with the Argentine's side reduced to nine men in their recent Copa del Rey defeat to Barcelona.

However, Simeone says Atletico will not alter their style of play and will instead look to contest the Liga clash on their terms.

"Everyone has their own style of play. You may like it or not but football is beautiful because you can win in different ways," he told reporters.

"We are a tough team, strong, intense, powerful at counter attacking, I don't want this to ever change as these are our players' skills and it's also in Atletico Madrid's DNA.

"We can't change because we don't know how to play any other way. Should we change our style it would be a total disaster. That's not going to happen.

"We're very respectful to all our rivals. We know that we're facing a great team, with excellent players and a grand coach.

"With our characteristics and our ideas, we'll try to take the match where we want to."

Despite the return of striker Fernando Torres, Simeone confirmed he will instead look to Mario Mandzukic and Antoine Griezmann to test a Real side without Sergio Ramos (hamstring), James Rodriguez (metatarsal) and the suspended Marcelo.

"Mandzukic and Griezmann are going to start," he added.

"We don't look at the players missing. How [Real] intend to approach the game is what interests us."

La Liga Preview: Atletico, Real to meet in Madrid derby

6 February 2015

784431header.jpg

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will lock horns in yet another derby in La Liga action on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin will not be dwelling on past results when the champions host city rivals and La Liga leaders Real Madrid on Saturday.

Atletico are unbeaten in five matches in all competitions against Real after edging their Madrid rivals 4-2 on aggregate in the Copa del Rey round of 16 in January.

Diego Simeone's men have not lost to Real since the UEFA Champions League final in May.

The two teams will resume hostilities at Vicente Calderon on Saturday, with Atletico seven points adrift of the league leaders through 21 matches.

And Godin said he knows past results count for nothing, especially against Real, who are in unbeaten six matches following their 2-1 win at home to Sevilla on Wednesday.

"It's an important match against a direct rival because of what's at stake in the league," said Godin, who played a full 90 minutes as Atletico accounted for Eibar 3-1 last week.

"Playing at the Calderon, with our people, we aspire to win the match. We want to win, we always want to win and even more against Real Madrid.

"It's a different match, and just because we won the previous matches doesn't mean we'll win this one.

"We must plan it well, follow the path we're on and that's what's going to bring us closer to the result we want."

Real are set to be boosted by the return of star Cristiano Ronaldo, who sat out the past two league fixtures due to suspension.

Godin revealed his team-mates have been focusing on Real's counter-attacking strength in the lead up to the blockbuster fixture.

Real have scored 50 goals in their past 15 league games.

"They play with very fast people at the front, very fast and very precise," said the Uruguayan. "We'll try to be very careful, especially when we have possession of the ball because when they steal it, they are the most dangerous in the world."

Barcelona will be monitoring the showdown very closely, with La Liga's second-placed team scheduled to play on Sunday.

Barca are four points behind Real and three clear of Atletico ahead of their trip to Athletic Bilbao.

"I think we have the chance to do something big this season," Barca defender Gerard Pique told reporters.

"We just have to keep the same level, keep getting results and get through the semi-finals of the cup and in the league try to put pressure on [Real] Madrid, the leaders, so they drop points. We have to keep picking up three points."

High-flying duo Sevilla and Valencia are both on the road as they attempt to return to winning ways.

Beaten at The Santiago Bernabeu midweek, fourth-placed Sevilla make the trip to lowly Getafe on Sunday.

Valencia - fifth in the standings - are in action at Espanyol on the same day after losing 3-2 to Barcelona last week.

In other fixtures, Villarreal host third-bottom Granada, Malaga make the trip to cellar-dwelling Levante and Real Sociedad entertain Celta Vigo.

Cordoba - outside of the relegation zone on goal difference - go head-to-head with Almeria, while Deportivo La Coruna and Eibar kick off the round on Friday.

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona: Alba wary of dangerous hosts

6 February 2015

784712header.jpg

Athletic Bilbao have struggled in front of goal, but Jordi Alba feels they could provide a stern test of Barcelona's title credentials.

Jordi Alba has warned Barcelona's defence to be wary of the threat posed by Athletic Bilbao when the Catalan club visit the San Mames on Sunday.

Barca travel to the Basque region in blistering form having suffered just one defeat - which came at Real Sociedad in December - since November, though they are four points adrift of leaders Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

By contrast Bilbao are mired in mid-table and have struggled for goals in the league so far this season, netting just 18 times.

Despite Bilbao's failings going forward, left-back Alba is taking nothing for granted and expects a difficult encounter with Ernesto Valverde's men.

"They're a young team that likes to play football," Alba said. "On offense they're very dangerous in the air. We have to watch out.

"We'll take the same approach as always: keep the ball, play our game, dominate the wings. They are very strong when they play up and when crossing the ball. They're dangerous.

"After the match against Real Sociedad, we found our game. Despite this, we don't think we're superior to any team. Any team can win these days. You have to be very careful with every opponent."

Defenders Douglas and Thomas Vermaelen remain Barca's only absentees, while Andoni Iraola is suspended for the hosts.

Barca forwards Neymar and Lionel Messi have netted 54 goals between them this season, and Bilbao defender Mikel Balenziaga is keen to ensure the latter is not given an easy ride this time around.

"There's more variations to their play [under Luis Enrique]," Balenziaga said. "We've also seen that they can also create a lot of danger on the counter, so we'll have to show plenty of concentration and try to make them uncomfortable.

"We'll be trying to pressure them higher upfield, so they can't get forward so easily on the counter. That sort of pressing suits us fine, it's our way of playing and it's what we'll also do against Barcelona.

"Both teams will be trying to press the other and playing our own kind of game, we can give them a good fight.

"Both Neymar and Messi are important players for Barcelona, but I think Messi is a more dangerous player.

"We'll be trying to ensure he sees as little play as possible, so he gets as few touches of the ball as possible and that he doesn't have a good day."

Barca won the reverse fixture 2-0 in September, when Neymar scored both goals.

La Liga Review: Atletico win Madrid derby, Levante off bottom

7 February 2015

785504header.jpg

Atletico Madrid thrashed rivals Real Madrid 4-0, while Villarreal and Levante also won in La Liga on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid breathed life into La Liga's title race with a thrashing of leaders Real Madrid, while Levante climbed off bottom in resounding fashion on Saturday.

Atletico were 4-0 winners over rivals Real, going 2-0 up in the 18th minute at the Vicente Calderon before second-half strikes to Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic.

Tiago and Saul scored four minutes apart early, the latter an early substitute for the injured Koke, and he produced a bicycle kick to double Atletico's lead.

Griezmann tried a bicycle kick of his own early in the second half with less success, but Saul eventually assisted the France forward for Atletico's third - Griezmann poking home in the 67th minute.

A Mandzukic header from Fernando Torres' cross capped Atletico's rout late on.

Levante trailed early to seventh-placed Malaga but stormed home to win 4-1 in front of their home faithful - their first league victory since November.

A David Barral hat-trick - aided by two penalties - lifted Levante, before Kalu Uche added their fourth goal in the 75th minute.

Villarreal moved level on points with Valencia in fifth, courtesy of a 2-0 home win over Granada - the latter sitting second-bottom after Levante's success.

Celta de Vigo (10th) stayed above Real Sociedad (12th), after equalising late against them for a 1-1 draw.

Imanol Agirretxe's eighth-minute opener was cancelled out late by Celta's Nolito in the 85th minute, keeping the latter two points ahead of Sociedad.

Deportivo La Coruna 2 Eibar 0: Hosts record rare double

6 February 2015

784901header.jpg

A 2-0 win over Eibar earned Deportivo La Coruna back-to-back Liga victories for the first time this season.

Deportivo La Coruna registered back-to-back wins for the first time this season with a 2-0 home Liga victory over Eibar on Friday.

Depor have struggled to make their presence felt since winning promotion at the end of last season, but are now unbeaten in three after picking up their sixth win of the season courtesy of goals from Lucas Perez and Ivan Cavaleiro.

The hosts dominated the opening period, but were wasteful with their chances and struggled to test goalkeeper Xabi Irureta.

Nevertheless, the amount of possession they enjoyed will have given Depor a wealth of confidence, and Oriol Riera nodded just wide at the beginning of the second half.

They finally broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute - Perez responding quickly after Irureta fluffed a punched clearance.

Cavaleiro made sure of the win with 12 minutes to go when he capitalised on another defensive lapse - this time a loose back pass - to touch beyond Irureta and smash the ball into an empty net.

Atletico Madrid 4 Real Madrid 0: Ruthless champions thrash rivals

7 February 2015

785220header.jpg

A stunning 4-0 win over bitter rivals and La Liga pacesetters Real Madrid reignited Atletico Madrid's title defence in glorious fashion.

Atletico Madrid's La Liga title defence received a major boost as the champions continued their recent dominance over bitter rivals Real Madrid with a spectacular 4-0 win on Saturday.

Diego Simeone's men would have fallen 10 points behind Real with defeat at the Vicente Calderon, but the Liga pacesetters were rolled over in ruthless fashion by a rampant Atletico side.

Victory extends Atletico's unbeaten run against their neighbours to six games this season, Real having been out-fought and out-thought as they failed to display the performance expected of a side at the top of the table.

Ancelotti, who insisted his men were "not scared" of Atletico, was able to call upon the services of Cristiano Ronaldo again following his suspension, but the visitors looked in trouble from the off and Tiago opened the scoring with 14 minutes gone.

Saul, an early substitute for the injured Koke, doubled their tally with a delightful bicycle kick four minutes later, leaving Real completely stunned.

The visitors rarely looked capable of mounting a response and Atletico added further goals through Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic to move within four points of Real at the summit.

Atletico began the contest with purpose and looked particularly threatening down the right flank through Arda Turan, who caused problems inside the first 10 minutes.

The hosts were dealt the blow of losing Koke to a hamstring injury in the 10th minute, but produced a marvellous response to the setback, taking the lead four minutes later.

In truth, there was a hint of fortune about the goal, as Tiago met Mandzukic's well-weighted pass on the edge of the area and drilled a low effort at Iker Casillas, who allowed the ball to squirm under him.

There was no doubt over the quality of Atletico's second, which came in the 18th minute.

Guilherme Siqueira produced a marauding run on the left wing, riding two challenges on his way, and then picked out a precise cross for Saul, whose acrobatic overhead kick flew in off the post.

Real picked things up after the half-hour mark, but Atletico continued to look lethal in attack and should have been awarded a penalty in the 34th minute when Sami Khedira blocked Diego Godin's goal-bound effort with his arm.

Atletico started the second half strongly and Griezmann tested Casillas with a stinging drive from the edge of the area, before sending a bicycle kick just over the crossbar.

The lively France star was not to be denied in the 67th minute, though, as Griezmann latched on to Saul's header across goal and poked in ahead of the sluggish Raphael Varane.

Real made a laboured attempt to salvage a consolation towards the end, but Atletico ultimately sapped them of their remaining pride as Mandzukic headed in substitute Fernando Torres' cross for a fourth, handing Simeone's side and second-placed Barcelona – who face Athletic Bilbao on Sunday – a huge boost in the title race.

Ancelotti rages at Real´s attitude

7 February 2015

785277header.jpg

Real Madrid lost 4-0 to rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday to leave coach Carlo Ancelotti fuming at his team's mindset.

Carlo Ancelotti launched a scathing attack on the attitude of his Real Madrid players following Saturday's humiliating 4-0 thrashing by bitter rivals Atletico Madrid, conceding "we were worse at everything".

Despite being without Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and James Rodriguez, Ancelotti's men still went into the clash considered favourites, aiming to go 10 points clear of their hosts with a win at Vicente Calderon.

But Atletico ran out comprehensive winners thanks to goals from Tiago, Saul, Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic.

Ancelotti pulled no punches in assessing the defeat, telling reporters: "Atletico deserved to win. They beat us in every aspect; fight, play, organisation and second balls. Not one Real Madrid player did well.

"We all failed. We all arrived second; we lost all of the tackles and all the aerial battles. We did not play the game at all. We were worse than Atletico at everything, but it's only three points.

"We must look at it over next days to determine why this happened. We are hurting a lot. Clearly we must change our attitude.

"The line-up was normal. It was the most clear and most logical team to play in this game, but the attitude and lack of motivation was a problem with everyone.

"It is not normal that Real Madrid play a game like this, so I must take responsibility for that and try to fix things quickly."

Over the course of the 90 minutes, Real mustered just a single shot on target and, even with Cristiano Ronaldo back in the team following his suspension, Ancelotti was angered by his side's struggles in attack.

"We didn't have good possession," he added. "We had nothing [in attack] today.

"We must weigh up in coming days why this happened, with calm and cool heads, and try to change things for future."

Carvajal slams worst 30 minutes in Real Madrid´s history

7 February 2015

785311header.jpg

La Liga leaders Real Madrid gave one of their worst performances in Saturday's 4-0 thumping at Atletico Madrid, Dani Carvajal lamented.

Dani Carvajal labelled the first 30 minutes of Real Madrid's 4-0 hammering by rivals Atletico Madrid as the worst in the club's history.

Tiago put the hosts ahead in the 14th minute, making the most of some poor goalkeeping by Iker Casillas, before Saul - a replacement for the injured Koke - doubled their lead with a stunning overhead kick.

Atletico blew the Liga leaders away in the second half, with Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic completing a resounding triumph to move the champions to within four points of Real.

But Carvajal was scathing of his side's efforts early in the contest post-match.

He told reporters: "That could be the worst 30 minutes Real Madrid have ever played, gifting chances and creating nothing ourselves.

"We're still angry, but the truth is in the result and we're definitely feeling pretty down.

"I would like to ask our fans for forgiveness. We were not up to the task today and we have to congratulate [Atletico] because they were the better team.

"What we have to do is forget this match and this result as quickly as possible.

"It's true they have won the last few derbies, but let's wait until the end of the season and see who has the titles."

Koke facing up to potential absence

7 February 2015

785378header.jpg

A 4-0 derby thrashing of Real Madrid has been tempered by the news that Atletico Madrid star Koke suffered an injury on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke looks set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering an apparent hamstring strain in Saturday's 4-0 derby demolition of Real Madrid.

The Spain international started alongside Tiago and Gabi as Diego Simeone's men ruthlessly took apart the Liga pacesetters, but he only lasted 10 minutes before being replaced by goalscorer Saul.

Koke was out for a week in January after hurting his hamstring, though he could now be set for a longer spell out after picking up what looks to be a similar problem.

The 23-year-old is reportedly facing up to a month on the sidelines.

The injury served as a disappointing blow at the end of a marvellous day for Atleti, although Saul could now be handed a chance to build on his fine performance in the derby should Koke's absence be confirmed.

Mandzukic: It was a pleasure to outplay Real Madrid

915882_heroa.jpg

The Croatia striker was thrilled with Atletico's performance in a memorable derby, while Tiago reserved a special mention for coach Diego Simeone

Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic has described playing in his side's 4-0 derby thrashing of Real Madrid as "a pleasure".

Mandzukic added the icing on the cake to an emphatic performance from the champions, scoring the final goal in their demolition of the current Liga leaders on Saturday.

The Croatia international says goals are not everything to him but offered little doubt as to the satisfaction within the Atleti dressing-room after the match.

He told Nova TV: "We all had to give our best to win this game and it was really a pleasure to outplay Real Madrid like that.

"It doesn't mater if I score or not, what is important is that we win games. But of course I am glad I scored."

Midfielder Tiago, who opened the scoring, paid tribute to the preparations of head coach Diego Simeone prior to the match.

"We wanted to keep up the pressure on Barcelona and Madrid in the league and we got the three points on a very good afternoon for us. We didn't give Real Madrid any openings and everything went our way from kick-off," he told reporters.

"Madrid played during the week and that worked against them. We knew that with our fans behind us we are strong and we showed that.

"We wanted to exploit the spaces that Real left behind them. We got into the game early and we found the areas where we could hurt Madrid. Our manager has shown what he is about; everything he told us to do came together on the pitch.

"I have been through the times when we couldn't win [the derby]. Not much has changed, but our confidence has and everything went our way. We have everything very clear in our minds and we are a strong team. We knew if we followed what we have been doing that victory was possible."

Guilherme Siqueira, singled out for praise by Simeone after the match, added to Canal Plus: "We are pleased to think that the work we did was very important.

"We kept high intensity throughout the game. When we put so much intensity in, it is difficult to beat us. I think we should give more credit to Atletico rather than criticise Madrid."

Godin fractures nose, avoids surgery

8 February 2015

785524header.jpg

Diego Godin will not go under the knife, despite suffering a nose fracture in Atletico Madrid's resounding derby win in La Liga on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin does not require surgery, after having his nose fractured in their 4-0 La Liga thrashing of Real Madrid.

The Uruguay international headbutted Sami Khedira's upper arm in an aerial challenge and came off second best; requiring treatment after just eight minutes had been played at the Vicente Calderon.

Atletico later revealed Godin, 28, suffered a nasal fracture, but cleared the defender of any long-term damage - meaning he should be fit to take his place for Atletico's trip to Celta do Vigo on February 15.

"The Uruguayan suffered a nasal fracture, reduced and plugged in the first half of the game against Real Madrid," an update on Atletico's website read.

"The player took a blow in a high ball disputed with Khedira. Godin underwent a CT scan that determined there will be no need to operate."

Godin played out the 90 minutes on Saturday after treatment but will wear a protective mask at Celta.

The heavy victory took a toll on Diego Simeone's men, with Koke (left hamstring) and Saul (left knee) failing to complete the match due to injury.

La Liga Review: Barcelona close the gap as Valencia replace Sevilla in fourth

8 February 2015

785993header.jpg

Real Madrid's lead at La Liga's summit is down to a point after Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao 5-2, while Valencia leapfrogged Sevilla.

Barcelona capitalised on Real Madrid's derby humiliation by beating Athletic Bilbao to close the game at La Liga's summit to one point on Sunday.

Real were thrashed 4-0 at Atletico Madrid on Saturday and Barcelona responded with a dazzling display at San Mames.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring with a deflected free-kick and the mercurial Argentinian, who was influential throughout, teed-up Luis Suarez to make it 2-0 after 26 minutes.

Mikel Rico pulled a goal back for Atletico in the 59th minute but, by the time home striker Artiz Aduriz netted seven minutes later, an Oscar de Marcos own goal and a sublime strike from Neymar had extended Barca's advantage.

Athletic finished with 10 men after Xabier Etxeita plunged his studs into Suarez's knee and the forward's replacement, Pedro Rodriguez completed the scoring when Messi crafted a wonderful 86th-minute effort.

Valencia replaced Sevilla in fourth after beating Espanyol 2-1, while Unai Emery's team went down at Getafe by the same scoreline.

The returning Pablo Piatti made the breakthrough for Valencia in the 62nd minute and the visitors went further ahead five minutes from time, when Dani Parejo's free-kick struck unfortunate goalkeeper Pau Lopez in the face and went in.

Sergio Garcia netted for Espanyol to set up a grandstand finish but Nuno's men closed out their fourth away win of the campaign.

Pedro Leon was Getafe's hero with an 85th-minute winner, condemning Sevilla to back-to-back defeats.

Grzegorz Krychowiak had initially pegged back Getafe after the hosts led through Alvaro Vazquez's 29th-minute penalty.

Elsewhere, Almeria claimed a vital 2-1 victory at fellow strugglers Cordoba.

Casillas asks for forgiveness after derby mauling

8 February 2015

785592header.jpg

Real Madrid slumped to a 4-0 thrashing at local rivals Atletico on Saturday, leading Iker Casillas to beg for forgiveness.

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has pleaded for forgiveness from the club's supporters following Saturday's 4-0 drubbing at the hands of rivals Atletico Madrid.

Spanish champions Atleti were ruthless in a 4-0 victory at the Vicente Calderon, as two goals in either half kept Diego Simeone's men in the race for the Liga title.

Goalkeeper Casillas believes there is little point in dwelling on the defeat because the team were so badly outplayed and is keen to quickly avenge the defeat in Real's coming matches.

"Analysing the game is a mistake. Atletico were better than us, they beat us all over the park," Casillas told reporters.

"They were superior and we have to congratulate them because they played a perfect game. We were lacking in every aspect of play.

"We leave here with heavy hearts, but we have to correct the mistakes so they don't repeat themselves again in the future.

"We also have to ask the fans for forgiveness because we are the last people who want to give this image of ourselves.

"It was a tough defeat. We have to get on with it, keep face and focus on the next match. We weren't at our best. We are responsible for conceding four goals.

"I'm not going to make excuses for myself because that would look like I was trying to distance myself from any of my mistakes."

Luis Enrique expects further twists in La Liga race

8 February 2015

786005header.jpg

Luis Enrique believes there are more twists to come in La Liga's title race after Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao to cut Real Madrid's lead.

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique sought to temper expectations after a perfect weekend for his team in La Liga's title race.

The Catalan club overcame their traditionally tricky trip to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night in style, chalking up a Lionel Messi-inspired 5-2 win at San Mames.

It was a result that reduced league leaders' Real Madrid's advantage at the summit to a solitary point after they were thrashed 4-0 by local rivals and defending champions Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

"It was a good night and a great game but throughout the season there'll be surprises for everyone," Luis Enrique told his post-match press conference.

"Throughout the season, all teams have ups and downs. This tournament is won by the most consistent team, but it won't be decided until the last day, so we can't take heart yet. Currently we are second.

"We must be prepared for any circumstances. Barca have been the same from day one. The players aren't machines. Sometimes they are better and other [times] less so.

"We all make mistakes. I always want us to give our best account of ourselves, but it's not possible.

Messi opened the scoring with a deflected free-kick, saw his shot diverted into the net by Athletic's Oscar de Marcos for Barcelona's third and had a hand in goals for Luis Suarez, Neymar and substitute Pedro.

Neymar's and Pedro's strikes came on the end of wonderfully crafted team moves and Luis Enrique chose to pay tribute to Messi's contribution within a superb collective effort.

"It's a great privilege for a coach to have a player like Messi, but recognition must extend to the entire group, when they play at a level like this."

Sevilla are ´low on fuel´ - Emery

9 February 2015

786032header.jpg

Sevilla coach Unai Emery conceded he needs to rotate his squad more after watching his side lost 2-1 to Getafe on Sunday.

Sevilla are set to rotate their starting line-up more often, after coach Unai Emery claimed a number of his players are "low on fuel", following their 2-1 loss at Getafe in La Liga on Sunday.

Emery's men dropped to fifth in La Liga after suffering their second straight loss and third in four league matches, with Valencia replacing Sevilla in fourth after a 2-1 victory at Espanyol.

Pedro Leon's 85th-minute goal secured the three points for Getafe in Madrid and Emery seemed to admit he had overworked his core starting group.

Emery has started 20 different players across Sevilla's 11 games in all competitions since Spanish football resumed in 2015.

At Getafe, Sevilla lost midfielder Stephane M'Bia in the 16th minute to a sore hamstring, while Iago Aspas was subbed off with 34 minutes remaining after complaining about a thigh problem.

"We lacked intensity and we lacked clarity," the 43-year-old coach said, according to AS.

"The team was competitive though but we just lacked that extra ambition at certain moments and our finishing wasn't up to scratch - especially from the balls we played in from either wing. We suffered most going through the middle because Getafe would just steal the ball from us.

"Maybe now is [a] good moment to start recovering players and give some of the rest of the lads a breather. We have a few players who are low on fuel, they need a break.

"But the overall sensations are still positive; if we keep a cool head then we will put ourselves in a good position in the table."

Sevilla's next match is against Cordoba on Saturday.

It will be their first week in six without a mid-week fixture.

Luis Enrique: No magic recipe for Barca

9 February 2015

786121header.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said there has been no change of approach for his in-form side following the defeat at Real Sociedad.

Luis Enrique said there is no "magic recipe" behind free-scoring Barcelona's outstanding form since their defeat at Real Sociedad last month.

The Catalan giants stretched their winning run to nine games in all competitions with a 5-2 La Liga hammering of Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Ruthless Barca have scored 34 goals in that impressive sequence of victories and Luis Enrique insisted he did not go back to the drawing board following the setback against David Moyes' side.

The Barca coach said: "There has not been any change. It is something you made up. It's brilliant for journalism. There isn't any change after San Sebastian (when Barcelona lost 1-0). We have the same idea.

"Barcelona is the same team since the first week and it will be the same until 38th week. Circumstances are different in each game and we have a rival in front of us.

"Players are not machines. Sometimes they are in a top level, others they are not. We all make mistakes, me first. I know you like a lot to ask "What happened? What did it change?", but there is not a magic recipe which changed this.

"Barcelona is the same through the season. We would like to be always in a high level but that's impossible."

Sunday's win in Bilbao ensured Barca are now only a point behind leaders Real Madrid, who were on the end of a 4-0 hammering by city rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Khedira suffers hamstring injury

9 February 2015

786271header.jpg

Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira sustained a hamstring injury in Saturday's 4-0 thrashing at Atletico Madrid.

Sami Khedira has suffered another blow in what has been a disappointing season after Real Madrid confirmed the midfielder has sustained a hamstring injury.

The Germany international made only his third La Liga start of 2014-15 in Saturday's 4-0 derby hammering against Atletico Madrid, but was substituted at half-time.

World Cup-winner Khedira has since been sent for a scan and the European champions on Monday confirmed that the 27-year-old is set for another spell on the sidelines.

A statement on the club's official website said: "Following the medical tests carried out on Sami Khedira by the Real Madrid doctors in the Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital, the player has been diagnosed with an injury to his left biceps femoris injury. His progress will be monitored."

Khedira has endured a frustrating campaign in which he has been troubled by injuries and overlooked by Carlo Ancelotti when fully fit.

The former Stuttgart man's contract expires at the end of the season and he continues to be linked with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu.

Koke suffered a grade two hamstring injury against Real Madrid and the Atletico Madrid man faces a spell on the sidelines.

Atletico Madrid's derby victory over Real Madrid came at a cost after the club confirmed on Monday that midfielder Koke suffered a hamstring strain.

The influential Spain international last only 10 minutes of Saturday's 4-0 hammering of the Liga leaders at Vicente Calderon before he was replaced by Saul, who scored the second goal just eight minutes after coming on.

Rising star Saul could now get a run in Diego Simeone's side, as Atleti have revealed that Koke sustained a grade two tear of his left hamstring.

The Spanish champions did not state how long the 23-year-old will be sidelined, but he could be out for at least a month.

Real also suffered an injury blow in Saturday's rout, with the European champions stating on Monday that Germany international Sami Khedira has also damaged his left hamstring.
