The way I see the dispute between Dr Chee Soon Juan and Mr Chiam See Tong is that the matter should have been buried a long time ago. It no longer has political relevance. It is annoying to continue to see it in the news every election time. It is an unfortunate distraction to the real issues the public should attend to.
There are three main players in the recurring saga: Dr Chee (and by extension, the SDP), the PAP, and Mr and Mrs Chiam.
If Chee’s version of the story is true, then he is indeed the most unfortunate victim of a conspiracy that lasted for over two decades. If Chee’s story is untrue, he already got his just deserts. Either way, the issue must be closed.
The PAP’s role and interest in this narrative is clear. Since the 1980’s, there are two persons the PAP is most afraid of: JB Jeyeratnam and CSJ. With the passing of JBJ, CSJ remains the sole nemesis of the PAP. It will do anything within its power to eliminate CSJ’s chance of getting into parliament. The recent mudslinging by the PM and all his bigwig cronies is a case in point. The Chiams are but part of their arsenal of destruction.
A very potent one, might I add. Besides destroying Chee, this weapon can blast to smithereens what little cohesion the oppositions might have.
The action of Mrs Lina Chiam (and by extension, her husband) is more ambiguous. Surely, she knows that her comments, strategically placed during each election, were used by the PAP and its media to destroy Chee. Yet she seemed to be a willing party to continue this mischief. What is her motive? Is she in cahoots with the PAP? Is she using the PAP to exact revenge for her husband? If the former is true, then there is nothing left to say.
If the latter is true, Mrs Chiam must ask herself at what point would she consider it enough, especially since she is a Christian and claims to have the people’s interest at heart. As a Christian, she should be forgiving and close the matter. Closing the matter would serve the people’s interest as it would help people to move forward.
