About an hour or so after NSP Secretary-General Hazel Poa released a statement today (10 Aug), announcing that it will not be contesting in Marine Parade GRC and MacPherson SMC in the upcoming GE (‘NSP pulls out of Marine Parade and MacPherson‘), WP Chairman Sylvia Lim released a note on WP Facebook page, thanking NSP for its generosity.

Ms Lim said that WP will continue to focus on its preparations and campaign on the 5 GRCs and 5 SMCs, which it previously announced that it will contest in:

Earlier, in her statement, Ms Poa said that it was a difficult decision for NSP to pull out of the 2 constituencies.

“It was a difficult decision for us to take. Just as Yee Jenn Jong was disappointed when Joo Chiat SMC was absorbed into Marine Parade GRC, so were NSP members who have been walking the ground in Marine Parade GRC,” Ms Poa said.

“However, we recognize the voters’ desire for greater opposition representation in Parliament, where opposition parties got only 10% of the seats despite garnering 40% of popular votes. Multi-cornered contests are likely to dilute opposition votes and reduce the chances of a more diverse Parliament.”

“We trust that Workers Party will send in good candidates and give voters in these two constituencies a choice,” Ms Poa generously conceded the 2 constituencies to WP so as to avoid a 3-cornered fight.

Ms Poa also praised SDP for its willingness to withdraw from Sembawang GRC.
She said, “At the meeting on Thursday, SDP announced that they would voluntarily withdraw from Sembawang GRC in the hope that it would help resolve remaining claims. Indeed, this has created room for further compromises amongst the parties present. Eventually, the outcome of the negotiations is that NSP will contest in Tampines and Sembawang GRCs, and Pioneer SMC.”

NSP thanked SDP for voluntarily withdrawing from Sembawang GRC “in the interest of opposition unity”.

Opposition supporters cheer wildly

Looking forward to Roy defaming PM Lee again during the rally. Would be nice to see him served with another defamation suit. This is provided Roy doesn't get declared a bankrupt before Nomination Day and disallowed from standing for elections. He's probably thinking of using the MP's monthly allowance to pay off the defamation suit. Quite a desperate move, and almost unlikely to happen.
