Re: Can schools just organise such trips for their 11 and 12 years old by themselves

got no Statellite warning meh :(

Our current technology on seismology has not advanced to the point where we can predict when and where an earthquake will happen in advance. Seismologists will tell you that certain regions or countries stand a higher chance of risk of an earthquake, but they cannot tell you when the quake will happen. Like the recent case of the quake in Nepal.

For many years, a number of seismologists are predicting the "Big One" in California as it lies in the fault lines of the 2 tectonic plates, but it hasn't happen yet so far although there have been a number of quakes reported in the region. That doesn't stop people from living and working in California.

Mt Kinabalu has not experienced quake for a number of years and no one expect the quake would happen last week. My friend just came back from the KK climb a few weeks ago. I told him you were lucky. He said that you can't predict it. Not even the experts.

Re: 8 students & 2 teachers from Tanjong Katong Pri Sch uncontactable after Sabah qua

What a moronic comment is that.

Base on your idiotic logic, maybe we should allow our kids to venture out of our home once they start to walk

Why not ? It will toughen your kids mentally . Nowadays kids are too pamper and always give up trying

Asians kids are so protected, how can they be like Angmos?

The country wants to be a nanny state and yet wants 12 years old to be leaders?

Tanjong Katong Primary principal is one sadist bastard who sent children to their death for sacrifice!

Some kind of cult? Like that boating accident in China where more than 400 elderly perished? And that Korea boat overturned leading to hundreds of students Mati!

Re: A Period Of National Mourning? State Flag Half Mast? Yes, it will be done.

Ex-PM Goh comes to pay his respects and give moral support. In the meanwhile, the jiak liao bee opposition people all absent as expected. Those farkers really only turn up during election time like what most people think.

True, in olden days, the people believe that they cannot offend the gods who watch over their mountains and city. If not, the gods will punish them with hailstorms and quakes.

Not surprised that some people today still believe those stuff.

The affected school is Tanjong Katong Primary School, not Tanjong Katong Girls' School, which I believe is a secondary school.

If fewer people are going turn up for the funeral of those dead kids and teachers, then it won't overshadow Ah Gong's passing.

Re: Why MOE ?

I have no qualms about this leadership programme. What I want to point out is that it is totally inappropriate for 11 to 12 years old given the level of maturity their age can offer in light of the activities that the perilous hike Mt Kinabalu has to offer !:o

just go down to bedok reservoir park. u can see little children high up in the trees.
by the time they are 12, Mt Kinabalu will be a walk in the park.

Re: Why MOE ?

SINGAPORE: Tanjong Katong Primary School (TKPS) has organised school trips to Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia multiple times, and participants have successfully completed the hike for seven years, said the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Sunday (Jun 7).

During a technical briefing, it was revealed that at least one international school in Singapore has also organised trips to Mount Kinabalu for its students.

Six students and a teacher from the school, and a Singaporean adventure guide were among the 18 killed at Mount Kinabalu when a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Sabah state on Friday morning. One teacher and one student are still missing. The group of 29 students and eight teachers had gone to Mount Kinabalu for a leadership programme.

It was also revealed that seven of the eight TKPS teachers on the trip had taken the Via Ferrata trail on Mount Kinabalu multiple times. The Via Ferrata trail comprised two routes – and the students would take the Walk the Torq route.

The student participants had undergone physical training such as climbing stairs to prepare for the trek. The climb was not a technically challenging one, though it could be physically tiring, said MOE.

No injuries have been reported on the route before, MOE added. The ministry attributed the presence of casualties to the earthquake.

Participants were all equipped with a helmet, shock-absorbing lanyards, harnesses and rope, and safety cables that are permanently bolted to the sides of the mountain. Each participant would have two red-coloured lanyards, both clipped to the safety cables. There would also be a yellow-coloured rope attached to other participants as a back-up for the lanyards.

The briefing also revealed the moments leading up to the quake.

ACCOUNT OF EVENTS

6.45AM: TKPS students and teachers arrive at start point of the trail to prepare for the hike. Five instructors are present, and each instructor would lead a group of up to 10 people. Five students stayed behind as they are not feeling well.

7.00AM: The students and teachers begin their trek in smaller groups on the Walk the Torq route, which TKPS students have gone through successfully for seven years. They begin their trek earlier as mist is known to obscure visibility on the route from as early as 8.00am.

7.15AM: The last two teams are about to embark on the trek when the quake strikes. Three of the groups are already on Mount Kinabalu. They consist of at least 12 students and five teachers. All students already have their helmets and harnesses on.

The teachers with the teams say they immediately get the students to huddle and bend down, while they shield the children as boulders fall along the side of the mountain. When the earth movements stop, the instructors get the two teams to move down the mountain to safety.

None of the casualties were from the two teams which had not started on the trek. Most of the victims were likely to be members of the three groups that had set off on their trek first, said MOE officials.

Re: Why MOE ?

Crazy MOE. No casualty in seven years doesn't mean it's the right to send 12 year olds to climb mt kinabalu.

Re: Why MOE ?

in my more than 30 years of mountain climbing, i've seen 12-year olds to some over 60 scaling heights equivalent or higher to that of kk. and so far there are more casualties among adults than teens and 12-year olds. in fact, in yosemite alone, almost all climbing accidents are attributed to late teens and adults making foolish moves either due to over-confidence or a total disregard to safety and disrespecting nature's dangers. many died wading over pools just above waterfalls. some were killed on trails and in camps by rockfalls, especially near curry camp under the gaze of glacier point. some were killed by contact with rat feces. this stupid sinkie call for bans of 12-year olds from mountain climbing only proves that these sinkies have never even climb the 2 boobs on their geylang prostitutes. for the clueless and newbies out there, it's a very safe sport, especially for 12-year olds under expert guidance and supervision. you can't predict and prevent earthquakes. even adult google multi-millionaires can get killed by rockslide and avalanche as a result of earthquakes. age is not to blame. it's luck and timing or the lack of both.

Re: Why MOE ?

Only 6 people died in 15 years. How was anyone to know 9 sinkies would die in a day?

So how many deaths is considered acceptable:confused: This is not NS but kids going on a field trip.

This looks like a case of incompetence. Something like what went on with our MRT system. For years the CEO did not allocate sufficient $ for maintenance. The eventual outcome is that the system collapsed & we now have breakdowns on a regular basis. Just another honest mistake:rolleyes:

Shouldn't come as a surprise. When you have incompetent people in the system, things will eventually go wrong.

What cock is this? Singapore has not faced war in decades. By that same logic, should Singapore disband the SAF?
