If we "have" to be pegged as an export orientated economy, please highlight the ramifications of pegging to a rapidly deflating currency to the entire population, particular those who are stuck with holding SGD denominated assets either through their HDB or CPF holdings.

Though GIC and Temasek are under the control of MOF, they remain at best independent entities directly under the control of the PM through appointee's and chairmanships. Tharman good as he is has to steer both the Finance and Manpower and DPM portfolios. I would not expect him to be able to actively manage both GIC and Temasek. If the PM decides that those appointments are made by him then it remains his call rightly or wrongly. T

The reason why we remain pegged to the US dollar is the same reason why the rest of the world keeps on buying US debt. The world trades in US dollars.

SWF in most countries (other than Middle east) are never managed by the MoF. They are managed independently and once the surplus is transferred to the SWF, it is the responsibility of the SWF to manage the investments. the MoF only is responsible for policy making, not for making specific investment decisions. If the SWF has lost money, blame it on the investment team. Even the Board cannot be made responsible.
