This statement in the article made me realize one thing. How did singapore become so vulnerable? My firm believe is that that poor leadership of Gay Loong is to blame. If you look at Old fart's diplomatic style, u will see what I am talking about. Old Fart did not only attend state dinners and conduct state visits to all these countries, he actually seeked and forged a relationship with their leaders. For example, he considered deng Xiaopeng a personal friend. when he want to, he can be eloquent, charming, sincere, and your best friend. Look at some of his rally speeches in the early days. If deng and Old Fart were still alive today and lets say the Hong Kong custom mistakenly confiscated the terrex, a simple one on one personal call to Deng would have solved the problem. and Deng would have called the HKG governor on top of that to scold him too for taking the Terrex. But Gay Loong does not have this sort of relationship. Call it arrogance, call it hautiness, call it whatever you want, but this is missing from him. Its a character flaw.
When I look at many of Old Fart's friendships, I see that he does not tolerate fools gladly. but if you are an intellectual heavy weight and you impress him, he can be your best friend. He had so many close and personal relationships. It is difficult to see how Singapore can deepen its leadership of Southeast Asia without stepping back from its rather arrogant exceptionalism. It has spent decades leveraging the weaknesses of its neighbors rather than assisting in the buildup of their institutions.
