To start, we should also note that PAP activists Victor Lye, who made a Facebook post thanking his team for distributing the fliers, and Muralidharan Pillai, who confirmed to media that the flyers were from PAP, have both clearly indicated the origins of the flyers. In spite of that, the documents in question do not carry any PAP logo. The flyers were also distributed past midnight, as if done to avoid direct contact with residents.
Notwithstanding the highly mysterious and secretive air surrounding the distribution, Muralidharan had insisted to media that they had nothing to hide and that “there was no difficulty in understanding that (the flyer) was from the PAP”.
Precedence set by the SDP
In 2008, six members of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) were charged for distributing flyers which were critical of the government.

I don't know about you but I think it is very low and crude of pap activists distributing fliers to Aljunied GRC residents to question their MPs regarding the lapses. What they had done is similar to what SDP had done and they were jailed for distributing flyers criticizing government policies. Where were they when pap town councils lost millions of money in bad investment in Lehman's brothers minibond?
Instead of winning votes for their masters, they are intensifying hatred for their masters. If they are not jailed for this act, it'll make people question the government and see them as biased and unfair. Already we are fed up with the frequent breakdown of our transport system and all our transport minister could do was lamenting and saying that he was very angry with the breakdowns; which everyone could do. However as transport minister who enjoy more than 6 figures salary per year, we have higher expectation from you and are not interested in your complains that you are angry with the breakdowns.
Maybe its time the government former army general who has no knowledge on train network be promoted to helm the SMRT. They should promote someone who has good engineering background and know the train system and be able to lead the engineering team to resolve the SMRT as millions of residents depend on it to travel to work and school since owning a car is too expensive in Singapore.

Fixing the opposition: The Path to Cynicism
Were it that the PAP is as white as snow, such that it has earned the right to judge, then it could measure others against themselves and let the results speak for themselves. If you aren't that white then you only help others see how imperfect you are magnified many times. What for?
Politics here is heading down the path of cynicism. More and more voters will lose respect for politicians. The people cannot be rallied. Hard but right decisions can no longer be taken because trust is lost. You have to be living on another planet not to notice that trust is already eroding. Even the office of President is less well regarded today.
Voting is compulsory here. If it wasn't I bet voter turnout would decline mirroring elsewhere. We are becoming another also run, which we know must mean the death knell for us.
So what if at the end of the day the PAP won? It can only be a Pyrrhic victory. Voters will make your life very difficult for the next term. Even internally the civil service leadership would lose respect for you even as rank and file civil servants find it more testy to serve customers.
As we become more cynical, the only guys who would find that it make sense to serve must be the viler ones too. Big time corruption is next. In fact there is too much to steal that theft can be hidden for a long time.
A window exists for us to reverse the trend. It is still open but for how long?
I wish the PAP would fight more honorably. Their MPs would do their homework. Ministers should be honest with how they use facts and statistics. But they never take responsibility any more. If something don't work they scold us but this option is quickly disappearing. Now we will make them regret that if they try.
How they have fallen from their high perch like the emperor without clothes reasoned that they must be wearing invisible and much more beautiful ones!

Politics here was always absurb. People didn't really have a say on who and how they should be governed. The government made sure that their party dominate and made it totally impossible for other political party to contest. Government resources were used to support the ruling party ...think NTUC, PA, CCC, RC. Even the security apparatus, the judges were compelled to help the ruling party maintain dominance.
The PAP have made sinkees to see that PAP = Sinkapore and create the impression that without PAP, sinkapore is doomed.
Despite that established impression, a growing pool of sinkees have shown their willingness to toss out that propaganda and embrace democracy.
Hopefully, the WP would go all out to topple the PAP in the next election. If WP doesn't step up, the other parties must form a coalition to contest all the constituencies to give sinkees a chance to toss out the PAP.

PAP Paya Lebar branch chairman K Muralidharan claims that the pamphlets were distributed by PAP activists as a “ground-up” initiative. It is unclear at this point of time whether that means these efforts had the approval of the party’s leadership. Whatever the case, Muralidharan has stated that “there was no difficulty in understanding that (the flyer) was from the PAP,” indicating that the activists were acting in their official capacity as party members.
These pamphlets thus qualify as election advertising under the definition set out in the Parliamentary Elections Act, Part I, Section 2:
“election advertising” means any poster, banner, notice, circular, handbill, illustration, article, advertisement or other material that can reasonably be regarded as intended —
(a) to promote or procure the electoral success at any election for one or more identifiable political parties, candidates or groups of candidates; or
(b) to otherwise enhance the standing of any such political parties, candidates or groups of candidates with the electorate in connection with any election,
and such material shall be election advertising even though it can reasonably be regarded as intended to achieve any other purpose as well and even though it does not expressly mention the name of any political party or candidate, but excludes any button, badge, pen, pencil, balloon and any other thing prescribed by the Minister by notification in the Gazette; [emphasis mine]

However, since the release of the AHPETC report, they have become the most strident voices of criticism — an irony that is not easily lost on Singaporeans such as Ciestera Michael who wrote, “The more u wana stir, the more i’ll support the opposition. Any party, i dont care.”
Others like Swee Heng are happy to see the PAP press the issue, “If WP has nothing to hide, why can’t it simply answer the questions? Don’t answer to Parliament. Don’t answer to residents. Then WP is answerable to no one.”
Although opinions remain divided on the issue of AHPETC’s mismanagement, the PAP’s strategy of capitalising on it has slowly begun to backfire as most people have begun to see it as a big bully—one that has become more concerned with scoring points with the electorate by taking cheap shots at the opposition rather than fixing pressing problems.
Joshua Tan writes, “Signs of desperation? How about spending the resources to fix the broken transport rail system first. Just think of all the productive hours lost by everyone by the numerous delays. That would bring you more votes.”
After the release of the AGO’s audit report, it was no pretty sight — a parliament full of PAP MPs questioning a few opposition MPs for two straight days. Now that issues of national importance such as the recent increase in train breakdowns have come under the spotlight, the PAP’s continued focus on AHPETC — which is essentially a municipal issue that has already been debated extensively — may prove to be politically costly.
The Facebook commenters with a feel for public sentiment have already weighed in. As Au Kah Kay writes, “The more PAP activists do such shameless things like this, the more petty and insecure they are being portrayed to be and the more likely Aljunied GRC voters are likely to vote for WP. Isn’t 2 full days of Parliament debate devoted to this issue enough?” Or more succinctly, “Low blow. Despicable. Shameless,” says Robert Yong. These were the sixth and seventh most-liked comments respectively.
Whatever the merits of its case, the PAP is unlikely to win more supporters than it loses with its latest antic. This may be further proof that the PAP has yet to learn its lesson from the humiliating outcome in the 2011 General Election —it remains out of touch with popular sentiment on the ground. Perhaps it’s time the PAP had party leaders from humbler backgrounds, people who can connect with average Singaporeans. Taking public transport everyday like the rest of the steerage and getting rid of those obscene monthly pay checks would be good starts. Who knows, the PAP might even start attracting the right crowd into its ranks if it lowered ministerial salaries.

Residents in Aljunied GRC received a surprise on Friday when they received pamphlets from People’s Action Party’s (PAP) activists encouraging them to question Workers’ Party (WP) Members of Parliament regarding allegations of financial mismanagement and improper corporate governance of the Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC). There’s just one problem with this; I think this is against the law.
Laws against election advertising is very strict in Singapore with campaigning only allowed once candidates have been nominated for an election and it must end one day before the polls are conducted. As the pamphlets were made and distributed by activists from the PAP against a rival political party, this seems on the surface to be totally illegal under the Parliamentary Elections Act.
To their credit, the PAP has tried to defend their activists with several netizens (presuming from the PAP) pointing out that many opposition parties also regularly send out newsletters and pamphlets. There’s only one big problem with that argument; the opposite sell and distributed all over Singapore. They do not sell and distributed in a certain constituency, targeting on one specific issue.
I also disagree with the argument that the pamphlet is not campaigning. Everyone in Singapore believe that a General Election will be call before the end of the year, and is it a coincidence that these pamphlets were distributed at the sole constituency the PAP lost to the opposition? Common sense tells you otherwise.
The strange thing is that this is a totally unnecessary move by the PAP. Not only do polls (conducted by the pro-government Strait Times) indicate that residents in Aljunied do not care about the issue, most Singaporeans don't care too. Harping on this issue does more harm than help the PAP cause of taking back Aljunied GRC.
In short, this move by the PAP makes no sense.

The PAP needs to wake-up and stop fighting like gentlemen. If the PAP continues to stick to their values, they will be overwhelmed by the underhanded games of the Worker's Party. What the WP seems to have forgotten, is that 40% of AHPETC residents voted for the PAP. #sharethetruth Bring it on!

The hundreds of grassroots volunteers and leaders of the PA are fully supportive of our grassroots advisors noble quest to liberate the folks of Aljunied from the heavy yoke of opposition mismanagement. We will heed the cry of our grassroots advisors to work tireless to convince more local residents to find enough courage to stand up against WP's cronyism and incompetence, and say "Enough is enough! You have abused the people's trust for too long!"
