I tell something that was never revealed in the press before or told by anyone. In his autobiography , he reveals that his father was a gambler, spending time at Chinese Swimming Club etc. People always queried him about the source of the wealth and the ability to send all 4 sons to the best universities of the world.

Though grandparents from both sides were wealthy in the early years, they families fell into hard times. His mother however was good with money and bought bungalows along Stevens Road which she rented to British Expats. It is no surprise that she lived just off Stevens Road at the last leg of her life. It was this money that paid for all this. During the war years, everyone suffered but the mother was shrewd enough to capitalise when the British returned

When the baby of the family and the youngest son Lee Suan Yew was due to go to UK for his university education, the mum rightly decided that she should finally enjoy the fruits of her hard labour and both she and her youngest son took the long route to UK and made a tour of the best of Europe.

This same son of Malay speaking Pernakan lady who made a fortune from the British is now dressed in Qing robes and pretends to be a Mandarin scholar even going thru the trouble of removing his given name of Harry by deed poll.

Hard Truths from the story:

1. Old Man's mother was a nice Peranakan woman; however, her oldest son is brutal, conceited, evil, terrible plus horrible. Our lives could have been better, much better, if this Koh hadnt helped him. What an idiot!

Read what an Ang Mo scholar has to say about LKY's obssession with "Chineseness"

Excerpts from Michael Barr's "The ruling elite of Singapore: Networks of power and influence"

Excerpt #1

This conviction about Chinese ethnic superiority extended not merely to a conviction that Chinese culture was one of the most dynamic and powerful in the world (and certainly more dynamic than the Malay and Indian cultures that he saw as its rivals in Singapore), but also to a belief that ethnic Chinese were physically and mentally superior to Malays and Indians in crucially important ways. He expressed his conviction in 1967 at a forum of university students when he was asked by the chair, ‘What is the X-factor in development?’ Lee replied by narrating a parable:

Three women were brought to the Singapore General Hospital,....

Excerpt #2

As a direct result of these changes in Lee’s personal approach to ethnic issues, ‘Chineseness’ now provides the framework for the operation of political, administrative, ideological, social and commercial power and is the most significant dynamic shaping the contemporary networks of power and influence in the country. This is not to say that Singapore’s social networks are in any sense genuinely ‘Chinese’, whatever that may mean, but that the society self-consciously operates on social patterns that are perceived by their architects in the ruling elite to be ‘Chinese’. In the context of contemporary Singapore, two of the most important impulses that are attributed to Chinese culture are a propensity to view society as a series of hierarchical relationships and the importance placed on education. These two impulses feed into a style of elitism modelled on the ideal of a benevolent, virtuous, self-effacing and humanistic cultured gentleman – the junzi 君子 idealised by Confucius.

Excerpt #3

Lee’s cultural entrepreneurship is a conscious and deliberate exercise in cultural cherry-picking that has been used to rationalise and reinforce the position of Lee Kuan Yew’s family at the centre of political, social, and economic power in the country. Yet to speak of Singapore’s Chineseness and Lee’s use of it in these broad-brush cultural terms is only part of the story. It is more basic than this, as the quote from Lee Kuan Yew’s 1967 parable suggests.

Excerpt #4

The centrality of Chineseness to the networks of power goes beyond merely embedding Chinese Singaporeans into the central orbits of Singapore’s power networks. Systematic efforts were and are made to use immigration and other policies to maintain Chinese demographic and social dominance of the population.

Excerpt #5

The process of Sinicisation has now been in place for more than three decades and it has taken its toll on Singapore’s multicultural ideal. Today the ideal Singaporean is no longer an English-educated Singaporean, but an English- and Mandarin-speaking Chinese. These measures have left aspiring and current members of the elite who are not Chinese scrambling to learn how to speak and/or write and/or sing in Mandarin, and to have their children taught Mandarin: all in an effort to copy the Chinese and become more acceptable to them. I do not write these words flippantly. Consider the following facts:

•  Former President S.R. Nathan, a septuagenarian and a Tamil-speaking Indian, had been learning Mandarin while in office and chose to have his memoirs about his early years as a seaman’s welfare Officer published first in Chinese, by a Chinese-language press.

•  Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, an Indian, has been learning Chinese calligraphy and has learnt to give karaoke performances in Mandarin.

•  Tharman Shanmugaratnam has also sent his children to Chinese SAP schools where they study Mandarin as their ‘mother tongue

I think that it was Lim Chin Siong and his ability to hold the crowd that influenced him greatly. He then knew the importance of language and culture to get votes. This is a guy who was raised as British colonial, spoke with his mum in Pernakan Malay, his sibling in English.

The Lees conveniently forgot to mention that this rickshaw puller saved Old Goat's life at a risk to his own and the other hockchia rickshaw puller's life. If this particular japanese soldier found Lee Con You in the rickshaw dormitory, all of them would have faced the firing squad, not just old fart. Saving someone's life is one thing, but risking your own to do so is another thing.

Don't forget that Old Fart was participating in the black market too while working for the Kempetai. He sold family heirlooms and valuables on the street which his mother had bought from her friends who were desperate and hungry. he was not touched by the other black marketeers working the same corner because of they knew he was working for the japs. How much money he derived from this, I do not know. Also, there are stories that he looted the Jap warehouses after the end of the war with jap assistance.

Someone should travel back to time and kill that motherfucker rickshaw-puller and rewrite history.

Why you think this rickshaw puller has to flee to a polluted 3rd world shit country like China? If he stayed in sinkieland, he sure will get whacked every day by angry sinkies for rescuing Lee Con You.

perhaps they planned the whole thing.

Planned what? There is a simple reason for the Jap to let him go back to "collect his things". If he spoke japanese to the guard, he probably told the guard that he worked for the them, and so he let him go. Or else, the Japs want to steal the belongings of all those that were killed. I can tell you that Lee Con You informing the guards to allow him to collect his belongings and come back later is a bullshit story. How I know this? My uncles and grand uncles were arrested by the Japanese during the war. My uncles told me that they simply rounded up any able bodied chinese on the streets in the neighbourhood and brought them back to the Jap HQ for interogation and processing. They were than separated and some were never seen again. My granduncle was killed this way and no one in the family ever saw him alive again after this day. I can tell you no one was allowed to go back home to collect their barang barang. So how come Con You so special, he is allowed to do that? This is a bullshit story. He either bribed the Jap soldier or he sucked the guy's lancheow. No Jap is so stupid as to fall for such a story.

I suggest bros read this excerpt. Its very informative about the treatment of Malaysian and singapore chinese by the Japs during the war. Page 4 is particularly bad. And i find it disgusting that a PM like Lee Con You can collaborate with such butchers and that his son can today say, forget about it and move on. I can say that my family never worked for the Japs in order to survive (like the vast majority of singaporeans), I can say that we lost family members killed by Japs, and I can say that my grandfather had a much larger family than the Con You mother's but yet never resorted to living on people's misery and misfortune thru the sale of their precious heirlooms on the black market and by betraying their country by working for the Japs. I don't think any of the Lees can say that.
