not the boss's fault if his staff don't want to report to the likes of you. Same thing if the company is full of say indians and they promote a chinese person, indians might not like it. Btw what's your race?

Isn't that the very definition of racism?... not liking someone because of their skin colour?

I'm of Middle Eastern descent.

Well you were kind of implying the boss was racist but he wasn't. He was just being practical no point putting someone at the helm if the ppl below refuse to accept it. I still find your story well rather far fetched cos the chinese ppl usually won't behave like that. I would assume you don't look like the indian looking type of middle easterner but of a different kind.

In Singapore, I was told straight to my face by my boss that I was not being promoted because of my skin colour. Beat that for racism.

Of course he qualified it by saying that he personally wasn't racist but it was because my Chinese peers would not be happy if they had to report to someone of my skin colour.

I don;t think it's as straightforward as it looks. It appears that there must been some bad blood between you and your peers or you probably pulled some strings or attempted something that made your peers dislike you so much that they didn't want to work under you. Mind you it's not just one or 2 of them but all of them didn't want to work under you if you got promoted. There's no racial type of hatred in singapore unlike western countries where they merely dislike someone simply cos he isn't white. There has to be more in the backstory.

Possible but then explain to me why I wasn't allowed to promote a Malay technician who was doing outstanding work compared to his Chinese counterparts.

I put up the promotion paperwork and it was rejected for the same reason... that the Chinese techs wouldn't be able to stomach reporting to a Malay.

When I first graduated, I applied for a job at OUB. I was told by my friend who was working there that I was wasting my time. The only dark skinned staff in OUB were security guards and drivers. I did a bit of research and he was absolutely right.

So meritocracy has to be overridden out of consideration for skin colour? If that isn't racism, I don't know what is.

That's the problem with Chinese sinkies. They scream racism when they're discriminated against but are only to ready to justify their own decisions made based on the basis of race.

The Kiwis and OZs can use the same logic too.... "I would like to hire you... I'm not racist... but you talk funny and the rest of the office wouldn't understand you so it would be hard for you to manage the team.".

Oh you're allowed to promote others? Wouldn't know about the malay tech story but i'm just curious i mean why would they be so straightforward with you like this? Putting a person's race into the equation, surely they would have been more tatical and given a better excuse for it at least for the sake of being politically correct. Openly stating the reason for rejecting the malay tech due to his race would be grounds for lord knows legal action, bad publicity. Anyway you're not chinese and the malay tech isn't chinese was there a question of favoring the malay tech?

On the OUB issue well i can just say it's all due to your own assumptions cos there is no proof that they hire someone just purely on his race.

Well here's the thing about leadership. A good leader is someone that garners the respect of his underlings. What use is a captain if the crew refuses to listen to him. In any case we're talking about your boss here. I have a feeling he's just trying to bring the heat off himself. He probably tried to blame the staff on his refusal to promote you or rather he just used an easily justifiable excuse not to promote you. Like you admitted yourself it might be possible that your peers didn't really get along with you so they wouldn't want to work under you. You see this is your story here. You and your peers work in this company. Everyone of you is aware that one amongst you will be promoted and become the superior to the rest of them. I find it hard to believe that the rest of the staff would refuse to work under you if you got promoted simply because you aren't chinese. Singapore isn't like this. It must have been you were highly unpopular amongst your peers so they didn't like you at all. If you got promoted they would resent you for that and they being racist is just the excuse to hide the fact that you weren't well liked amongst your peers.

Might i add that being different from everyone else aka being a minority does have its bad points. It applies to everyone. Suppose there was a chinese in a malay majority environment. I can bet with you he would not get promoted cos he wasn't a malay.

Kudos for continuing to defend the Singapore system but the reason I was given the real reason, off the record of course, was because I was the section head at the time. I was part of management. Covert recording devices weren't around at the time. Had I made an official complaint, management would simply have denied ever saying such a thing.

However, even if they had openly stated the reason, nothing would have happened. You see racism is allowed in Singapore. You can actually specify the race you want in a job ad. See for yourself....

I have personally met dozens of Malaysian Chinese who emigrated to NZ. The reason?... to escape the racism that they face in their former homeland.

I have Chin friends who came here to study and work too. At least, the useless Malay govt is doing everything they can protect their Bumis. But, being this lazy group of ppl aren't going to change their working attitude either.

OMG they only want malay drivers? So chinese cannot apply.

You see sam there is also racism for the chinese too cos a chinese driver might not get the job. Then when ppl see this job ad they actually get offended thinking oh only malays can be the drivers? While not looking at the fact that chinese drivers get discriminated.

Btw did you really want to promote the malay tech cos he's better than the chinese techs or you know you wanted "revenge"?

Exactly the same reason is given in OZ and NZ when they don't want to hire a Singaporean.... strange accent... different culture... won't be able to command the respect of the Ang Mohs blah blah blah..

As for respect I had no problems once I started my own company. I had staff of all creeds and colours who are still in touch with me today 20 years after I sold the enterprise.

The Malay tech was better. When I started my own place, he was one of those I poached because I felt he was getting a raw deal.

difference in OZ and NZ is they really really put race into the equation. You really feel different if you are not ang moh. I think you must have really pissed off your peers somehow that's why they won't be happy if you got promoted.

OK la respect you for starting your own porno company in a foreign country and it's one of the biggest around.

racial harmony in mudland? Where the m&ds have bumi status and a malay politician can bring this up to make the malays actually support him thereby malays are happy discriminating others as long as they benefit even when they are the majority and this is called racial harmony? Just change the race from malays to chinese so the situation in malaysia is the same but this time the majority race is chinese and they are the ones with the bumi status instead all of a sudden such a thread like this won't be started.

calling others in a derogatory manner makes no different than the people you criticise.

 Good one from you sam. I honestly don't know why some ppl think malaysai has racial harmony when their constitution discriminates non malays.

singapore and malaysian constitution have special privilege for the according to singapore constitution article 152:

Minorities and special position of Malays
152. —(1) It shall be the responsibility of the Government constantly to care for the interests of the racial and religious minorities in Singapore.

(2) The Government shall exercise its functions in such manner as to recognise the special position of the Malays, who are the indigenous people of Singapore, and accordingly it shall be the responsibility of the Government to protect, safeguard, support, foster and promote their political, educational, religious, economic, social and cultural interests and the Malay language.
