[h=1]Johor steps up checks at entry points following Singapore Zika outbreak
[/h]
JOHOR BARU: The Johor government has beefed up checks at the two main entry points to the state from Singapore, namely the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Second Link, in light of the two Zika cases reported in the island republic.
State Health, Environment, Education and Information Executive Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said that the temperature of all travellers will be measured when they walk pass thermal scanners, and all suspected cases of Zika will be referred to the nearest health clinics.
"State Immigration will also alert the relevant authority when they suspect anyone who is unwell of being infected with Zika.
"We are also disseminating information on Zika digitally at health clinics, and all general practitioners have been tasked to be on the alert for anyone showing symptoms of Zika, such as fever, conjunctivitis and measles-like features, particularly those who travel to and from Singapore.
"The intensity of monitoring and enforcement will depend on the locality, such as whether a neighbourhood has many residents who travel to and from Singapore.
"We will deploy more staff to any area which has reports of the Zika infection, and increase efforts if there are new reports. Currently, there are no reports of new cases in Singapore nor Johor," Ayub said in a statement.
On Monday, Singapore confirmed two new cases of the Zika virus, bringing the total number of reported cases in the country to eight.
In September last year, a woman from Bandar Botanic, Klang, Selangor became the first person in the country to be infected with Zika after visiting her daughter in Singapore who was infected with the virus.
