A youth in Singapore filmed himself removing a straw from an iJooz kiosk, licking it, and placing it back into the straw dispenser.

The incident came to public attention after he posted the video on his Instagram story on Mar. 12.

His account has since been made private.

The exact location of the kiosk remains unknown.

Internal investigations ongoing: iJooz

In response to Mothership's queries, iJooz said it takes a serious view of the alleged incident and has initiated an internal investigation.

The incident "concerns the hygiene and safety standards that we are fully committed to upholding," the company said, adding that it has escalated the matter to the relevant authorities and filed a police report.

iJooz also stated that it is accelerating the rollout of upgraded machines across Singapore to enhance hygiene safeguards.

"Some of our newer machines are already equipped with enclosed systems, where straws are not exposed prior to dispensing under normal operation," it said.

The company added that it intends to expand these features islandwide to reduce the risk of similar incidents.

A French teen facing criminal charges in Singapore for a straw licking stunt was, on Wednesday, April 29, granted permission to leave the country for three weeks on pledges to return.

The 18-year-old is accused of posting a video of himself on social media, in which he put a straw he had licked back into the dispenser on an orange juice vending machine. Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien's clip went viral and triggered a backlash that led to his arrest in Singapore, which has a reputation for not tolerating bad behaviour.

The teen's lawyer sought permission from a judge for him to travel to Manila from May 2-25 for an internship, a key requirement for him to graduate. The judge granted the request after the prosecution posed no objection, but asked that he must remain contactable while overseas and required a SG$5,000 ($3,900) bond.

His next appearance in the Singapore court was also rescheduled from May 22 to May 29.

Up to two years in prison
The teen, who is studying in Singapore and is out on bail, was charged last Friday over the straw stunt. He uploaded the video on Instagram knowing that it "would or would probably cause annoyance to the public," according to court documents. The public nuisance offence carries a jail term of up to three months and a fine.

A second charge, of committing mischief, alleges that Maximilien knew that he was "likely to cause wrongful loss or damage" to iJooz, the company operating the vending machine, which had to replace all 500 straws in the dispenser.

The mischief offence carries a punishment of up to two years in jail on conviction and a fine, according to the charge sheet. Both offences were allegedly committed on March 12.

The Straits Times newspaper said the video "quickly went viral, sparking shock and concern among netizens."

What a joke of a country.

Glad this forum is back online, it was hit by a hacker since yesterday. Still can't search old posts for now.

Anyway, this video is very relevant to this thread's topic. Too many Gen Z fuckwits would do anything for a little bit of Internet fame.
