A former airport boss has become the highest earning civil servant in history at the Ministry of Defence .

Tony Douglas is being paid more than £500,000 a year to buy military equipment – while low-paid front line soldiers have to make do with a one per cent pay rise.

The MoD lured the Abu Dhabi Airports chief with a salary of £287,000 plus a bonus of £250,000.

His basic is higher than the Prime Minister’s , the Secretary of State for Defence, Michael Fallon and Armed Forces head, Gen Sir Nick Houghton.
