SINGAPORE: Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said that a significant part of what has been attributed to MP Seng Han Thong by people and netizens over his recent comments is false.

Weighing in on the controversial remarks, Mr Shanmugam said the key point is that Mr Seng referred to the MRT officer's statement in order to rebut it - to say that he disagreed with it.

Mr Shanmugam said: "Han Thong heard over the radio what an officer from MRT said, essentially suggesting that poor language skills of Chinese, Indian and Malay drivers who work with SMRT were part of the problem in the inadequacy of the response by SMRT. Seng Han Thong strongly disagreed with this comment.

"So when he went on TV, he referred to this comment, and in essence made the point that the language skills of workers should not be blamed for the inadequacy of the response. And his point is that broken English can be effective in communicating of what needs to be communicated.

"The real problem according to him, was that the workers, drivers specifically, had not been given adequate training to deal with these sorts of emergencies."

Mr Shanmugam said the mistake Mr Seng made was that he misquoted the MRT officer and said that the officer had referred to Indian and Malay drivers when in fact, the officer had referred to drivers of all races.

Mr Shanmugam added that the article by The Online Citizen was false. He said it attributed to Mr Seng the opposite of what he had said.

The minister said: "The article does not say that he was quoting an MRT officer. They could have pointed out that it was an inaccurate quote. The didn't say he was quoting an MRT officer and neither does it say that he disagreed with that view. Instead, in both the headlines and in the text, it reaffirms the view that these were his words."

Mr Shanmugam believes Mr Seng is not racist. He said he has known Mr Seng for many years, adding that he works hard on the ground and helps everyone.

He also said it is unfair to label Mr Seng as racist.

Mr Shanmugam added: "We have to look at the facts. So I hope that we can deal with this matter on the basis of facts and not on the basis of false statements which are wrongly attributed to someone."

Strange, that it took so long for the Minister to speak out.
If what the minister says is true, then what the fcuk was MP Seng apologising for?
Why not have the official transcript from his broadcast released for review; the Minister should then refer to the specifics of the transcript rather than speaking out generally.

During Shanmugam's first few months as an MP, he suggested that the minorities are unhappy with the special privileges accorded to Chinese via Super Schools. He also commented about the lack of integration as a result of it. He said marginalisation would seep in.

He never in his wildest dream expected the response he received. LHL as DPM, called a press conference and the Toa Payoh Brothel did their part. He launched a massive broadside and essentially asked Shanmugam to provide evidence and accused him of not knowing Singapore. It made the headlines the next day. It was the first and only time that PAP openly conducted warfare on its own MP. Two other occasions involved ex PAP MPs and 2 Presidents - OTC and Nair. Again the Brothel press did the job well.

Shanmugam panicked and called all the known insiders and begged for mercy. He conceded defeat and the matter was quietly dropped. He realised him role and has been compliant since. Note that it was not Davinder that offered free service to prosecute the NKF directors but Shanmugam.

Even Seng Han Tong did not explain it in the way that Shanmugam did. It is the complete opposite. In future I am sure people will consult Shanmugam on how to call the colour red, blue.

That is why I am puzzle?. One didn't make eye at his neighbour's wife, why one is apologizing to the husband?:D In other words, we are all incorrigible liars! and dare to comment on the 'holey than thou' Immortals.

Why say sorry?? why?

Hri Kumar Nair also gave his backing to Ah Seng.. So that means 2 PAP Indian MPs on the side of Ah Seng while 3 PAP Malay MPs deep frying him hard for his comments... This is like a soapbox drama..:D So does that mean that the 3 Malay MPs were jumping the gun a tad too fast in slamming Ah Seng? Disunity within PAP??? The Clown Prince has been silent so far.. Obviously this incident is considered a trivial matter for him when he got other important things like the MRT problems to deal with.. But if this had happened few weeks before last May's GE, Ass Loong would waste no time in dealing with it..

Here's to you, Seng,

The boys from Queenstown say you lied!
